Vote to Ban Orbitz From the List Servers

This poll is the official public vote for whether or not the user Orbitz should be banned from the list server. The ban will take place on all active list servers, and last for 30 days. Voting on this ban will remain open for 48 hours after the initial time of this post. The results of this poll will be public, as in anyone can see who voted on what. Anyone who votes more than once will have all of their votes nullified -- only one vote is allowed per person. A 2/3 majority vote is needed for the ban to take place -- that is, at least 2/3 of the votes (not counting non-votes) need to be 'yes' votes for the ban to pass.

Please also note that this thread is intended for the voting process only. Please do not debate the issue of the vote in this thread.

Now... what is this? What's going on? Why are the list servers now banning people?
The list server administration has recently been hearing growing support for allowing the list servers to ban users from using the list service for rare cases in which a particular user is disrupting the quality of the game for the rest of the community. The list servers have never been intended to be used as a means of policing the community, and we would like to keep it that way. However, we believe that if we are capable of aiding the community by taking action in banning a particular user, it would be more appropriate for us to do so than to just sit back and let the community possibly get destroyed. For us to take action on something that would effect the community though, we feel it would be more appropriate to let the community have a say in such actions. That's why this vote is taking place. It is to give you, the community, a chance to decide if our actions are reasonable and worth doing. So please, take this seriously, and if you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Also, please note that this policy is relatively new, and may be modified and improved in the future. Though hopefully we should not need to resort to these measures very often.

I talked with Orbitz a week ago and threatened to contact his ISP - he said he'd' never do it again. Has he done anything since then? If so, ban him.

The best poll option ever, pretty creative:
I have no opinion/I do not wish to vote (non-vote)

Orbitz is going too far if he is causing Denial of Service attacks and ruining everyone's fun. short of hiring an assassin, banning him is the only thing we can do. I am fully in support of the ban.

From my knowledge, they are indeed the same person. Orbitz every so often went around as Adeel, and would remind his status to everyone in the server at the time.

Adeel and Orbitz share the same IP, therefore its clear Adeel is just another of Orbitz nicknames.

I vote yes, in that case. I will also be reporting him to his ISP and other local ISPs, attempting to get him blacklisted.

The community has spoken, and the ban will be enforced. The ban may take a day or so to come into affect on all the list servers, but eventually it will.

During this ban, its useful for us if the community can work with us. If you see Orbitz in your game please report his IP to either myself or Monolith via IM's, IRC or PM's.

We highly recommend clients also block him during this, as he may find a way to bypass a list ban, sadly the Network Filter doesnt stop all forms of attack with ASD. Its in your best interest to block him on your Firewall or Router.

His current known IP is: 24.114.132.155

If you are unable to block him with your Firewall or Router I recommend you download a software IP blocker known as "PeerGuardian". I have packaged it up in a ready to go format, it can be downloaded from:
http://nimmy-online.com/jj2networkfilter/peer.zip
Just unzip all the files into one location and run the exe. The program will be in the trayicon when its active. While it is running Orbitz wont be able to access any resources on your PC.

We cannot guarantee Orbitz's complete removal or absense from all JJ2 game servers, therefore blocking him your end is as vital.

We hope we can continue to work with the community and offer assistance when possible. Thank you very much, you have spoken and we have acted.

I am glad we are taking action against someone like this.

My hacking encounter with him had him imposing as Derby, and he started talking with our names, especially mine, using sexual language. Gad, I'm STILL ticked about it!

When the 30 days are up, and he continues to hack, will he get a more serious ban?

Thank you everybody who voted. I'm glad we got a good turnout. If problems with Oribitz continue in the future.. hopefully we'll have figured out what to do by then. The reason all this took so long was because this was the first time we've had to deal with such an issue since working to put together a more rhobust list server network. We're hoping to improve from this.

As a side note, since you brought it up. There are numerous ISPs that cost the same ammount or less than AOL that aren't AOL.

No, we're just going to bill his credit card automatically after the 30 days until unless he calls up to cancel the imaginary fee to play JJ2 online.

I still want him to reply to what I said.

There has been reports they he has been appearing in limited servers, the first sighting of him was in a JDC Event.

Almost every sighting has seen him crash a server. Although I've only heard of 2 sightings, I suspect they will be more. It is still unknown if hes using a proxy to bypass or if hes friends are telling him the IP's for servers.

So it appears all the list ban is doing is slowing him down, and making it far more difficult for him to attack, but not impossible.

I shall again repeat what I said in the end of poll post:

I have asked many J2O staff if they could make that news once it was posted, but they have shown little interest. Therefore promoting PeerGuardian can only be done by word of mouth, JCF and the MOTD feature.

If you dont run PeerGuardian and get attacked, please dont bother me or any of the other list admins. We have tried to slow him down, and we have now made one sure way to stop him. If you want to be protected, run the protection, Simple.

I bring semi-good news.

I launched an investigation once I heard of Orbitz "bypassing" his ban. It may have taken a couple of days, but its finally figured out.

It turns out, on one of the list servers still used by a few players (Contrabandent) accidently failed to enforce the ban. By accidently I mean the router that is suppose to IP block, didnt do its job for some odd reason. The host of that list Becky(formally known as Burger) is aware and should hopefully be enforcing the ban by other means (I have supplied her with PeerGuardian, which she said she may use).

It may take a day or two for this to come into affect, but I'm glad we got to the bottom of this. I shall talk to other list admins to see if we can get the ban either extended or moved or something like that. He has STILL actively crashed games while he has had the ability to do so.

So in a day or two, hopefully it will end all this. But still, I advise every host to run PeerGuardian which you can read about a couple of posts above.
