I have the signs in progress.

Edit: Actually, they're done already.

Tried to make them look monolithic. If somebody wants to make them look more so, be my guest.

Well, more like obsidian really. If that's possible. But still keeping with the color scheme.

anyway...
time to do a background soon, I think.
what about a sky with stars?
the tileset looks like some sort of spacestation or what do you think?

...obsidian.

Just a thought, but you might want to spend a little more time on layer 4 before starting in on a backround... as it is, this tileset is pretty basic and unvaried. I don't really see any reason to use it for anything.

Space station is the cheapest thing ever. And so are most skies with stars.
I'd say we should have some rocks of the same color as the blocks to make it look like the structures were carved into the stone. Stone spires and stuff for the background.
...we should definitely find something to vary the color-scheme a bit, though.

If nobody does it before me, I will attempt to make some rock-ground tomorrow after I got some sleep, which I am in a dire need of right now.

I envision the tileset to be cave-like, however, not exactly a cave.. besides, caves are overused in any genre of games.
Imagine a mountain or canyon with extremely complex cavern systems inside. You can see mountains in the background, through cracks, big holes and openings in the mountain walls, maybe a river flowing there, a canyon would be a nice idea, I think.
And inside these caverns, some native society built their homes.
I love the idea. I should make a sketch of what I have in mind to be able to illustrate it better, I think you'd like it.

I envisioned the set to take place underwater. Like a Hi-tech atlantis labratory.
But since I don't have an extensive writeup like Faw, we'll have to go with his idea.
However, having a vague idea could produce much more imaginitive tiles than a more outlined one. Then again a vague plan could lead to another September mishap.

It's a bit straight-lined and non-tilted for this, but it kind of reminds me of an abandoned factory or laboratory or something sinking into this giant lake of glowing green acid, and everything's abandoned and/or radioacitive and alive.

Hmmm, I see.

Well, for those interested, here's the sketch: http://chaos.foxmage.com/canyonthing.jpg
The numbers of course denote layers. Layers 5+6 may also be made into a single layer, I guess, but it wouldn't allow for flowing water.
Both the water and sky should be a bright blue to make a pleasent contrast to the murky colors inside. The background canyon and rocks should be of the same color as the ground, except paler, of course, which would create a sense of depth and close the tileset by showing the player that they are inside such a rock.
Also, I tried to make clear that the rocks ought to have depth. I dislike how many tileset makers just make a texture for the ground, then give it a one or two-pixel border and call it a job well done. Borders with a real sense of depth are harder to do, but should be worth it.

Well, that's just an idea. Either of yours' could work as well.

EDIT: Actually, now that I think about it, the water should be layer 7 for the same reason why the stone spires should be layer 5.

...well, I'm not really fond of them myself. I'm not too experienced with tilesets. Feel free to disregard them.

Well, I think the idea with the abandoned factory/laboratory is good.
Because that's what the tileset looks like right now.

What it looks like right now is frankly quite unoriginal, though. So are factories and laboratories. Buildings sinking into lakes, on the other hand, are not. We have to expand the theme somehow.

If it sunk, there should be cracks in the walls where water leaks in. I'd do that, but I'm not good at drawing/animating water.

Well uh yeah.. the background as you envision it is an example of style over functionality. There won't be much possibilites with such a background, and every level will look the same therefore.

And the texture doesn't look too good, sorry D;

Well, I guess so. But except for the sky, which should be textured, all the background elements could also be exchangable and we could give alternatives. ...besides, most tileset backgrounds are kind of like that, aren't they.

How about oily water instead?

Although that might take too many shades of purple and such...

Unless it's just black.

Nice work, everyone who contributed.

To contribute myself, I'd say the tileset looks nice, but very bland. Too much blue/black. :E
