Question How many people were playing JJ2 online when it was new

Hello.

This question is mainly dedicated for those who had bought jj2 when it was new...

How many people were playing JJ2 that time (on the official list server)?

Was the list of games in progress full, or was it something like today?

I'm just wondering....

I had it, played online, won some stuff and got a router... >O

There were less people actually playing online that nowadays. In the earier years, people all made their own levels. And EYECANDY didn't exist! You could get high scores for randomly placing giant Carrotus-carrots everywhere! *points at homecooked battle levels in the TSF pack*

It did, we were all just seven years younger (five for TSF) so our standards were dramatically lower.

Yeah, true... Look at the giant carrot in the Easter Tileset. Then, look at the battle levels included with TSF... Geez... They use the base of the giant carrot as a PLATFORM! They use NORMAL GROUND TILES for walls! They didn't even use the right edging!

Sorry, but it's far below standards... Every level has to look AT LEAST better than Epic's levels.

I began playing online Late December of 1998, and yes things were different.

I bought the game about half a year after it's release, then some months ago I bound it to the box untouched and almost removed it from my comp. But something like two years ago, around 2001 I found J2o and all and began playing the sp-levels in the downloads-section. But I didn't have any clue of playing it through internet before 2003, since most people hardly even had yet a good connection so they would even think about playing online before the begin of 2000. So I indeed wish I did have 256k on those times. around 2003 there were still active players though, but only a few servers running. At least jdc-events were far more popular. So far after that I've been quite actively playing this game, on single-player, alike creating levels and playing it online...whatever.

I played it when it was first out, fantastic back then.

None of this crashing/cheating stuff existed back then, it was enjoyable to host and play online.

Now days not so much..

Yeah, there were many players, but noone of them was even close to the current average skill level. What do you prefer, a lot of newbies or a few skilled players?

A lot of newbies if the alternative is having no servers up or no people to play with for most of the day.

You can't compare newbie preference, because EVERYBODY was either newbie or unskilled at those times. They were much happier and more enjoyable. 1999 was awsome.

I remember it well too. I took a particular liking to the battle servers. I remember when people would stream in and out of servers and when people would string together level packs with haphazardly made levels. Granted, I'm still a bad player, but the fun then was so intense.

To get all of that back, it would take another release. Jazz2 is very outdated.
