People still play JJ2?

Hi, I'm new here, I found this site while looking up the game Jazz the Jackrabbit 2. It was my favorite game at one point, I used to make maps and loved playing online. Until one day, people stopped playing completely. Do people still play this game? I'd love to get back into it. I'm getting a new copy of the game sometime this week, when my order comes in. Thanks for taking the time to answer my question.

BTW, I downloaded the shareware version a little while ago, and when I tried playing online, I was the only one... as I expected. That's the reason I'm asking this question, although it does seem that this forum is populated with die hard fans that still play... someone help me ascertain my theories

You will be unable to find other servers if you do not use the newest list servers patch. It's somewhere at this site.

Not really. Those people might be reading some of the threads but not eagerly replying into them, as they are not interested of jj2 much anymore. Whatever.

People don't play anymore. The game itself conjures up hallucinations that only make it look like they're playing.

I play, but not as much as of late. Maybe it's a lack of good servers, or the fact much of my time is consumed by other games. Probably both.

I remember eagery waiting for my copy of JJ1... what was it...4 years ago!

As for party mode, go here, and click "Neccisary downloads" as you need the patchs for your copy of jj2 to even work online

As for online playing, I am usually a regular. not so much of one on the forums... :P

anyway, welcome, and keep jj2 alive!

I was going to make a new topic to vent in, but this one seems like a good enough topic for me. Saves me the trouble of making a new topic.

I, for one, fail to see why people would want to play Jazz Jackrabbit 2 anymore. In my experience, the community -- the ones that still play, I mean -- have turned into snobbish, elitest morons who only know how to laugh at you if you can't keep up with them. True, this happens to all the popular games at some point or another, especially with the rampant pirating that tends to go on every now and then. And yet. . .it never fails to amaze me when I see such things. Why? Maybe because I keep thinking to myself, "Oh, given time, these people will mature. They'll grow out of it." And some actually do. But for those that don't, they're followed by other, new people who decide "Okay, I'm anonymus online. No one knows who I am. Time to act like a jerk and get away with it! Yeehaw!"(See also "John Gabriel's Greater Internet ****wad Theory")

Edit: Oh, and the levels. What the Hell is up with these idiotic levels that have no flow to them whatsoever? I can understand Clan Levels to a degree, sure. To a lesser degree, I can even understand those stupid "trick" levels people make(Wind Meister comes to might right quickly). But. . .I refuse to play levels that are single-character centric in Multiplayer mode or levels that are poorly constructed, such as these couple Capture levels up on a couple servers as I type this.
One level has a tremendous amount of badly-placed platforms which require either a lot of well-timed Double Jumps from Spaz(not an easy task when you're running with the opponent's flag back to your base) or a number of concentrated Super Uppercuts from Jazz(which takes quite a while to do). This level also has Freeze Hourglasses in front of either forification, which is quite annoying when you're trying to return the other flag and you end up not moving fast enough to do so.
And the other level is better designed, but unfortunately, it has no Blue flag in it! That's right. Only one flag. Whee.

Yes, if it's not the people being jerks, it's the levels being sub-par and poorly-flowing.

So, in answer to the question, however. . . Give me a good reason to come back to the online community I once actually tried to tread upon, and I'll think about it.

Those two levels you mentioned do not come close to representing the community in terms of level quality (I'm assuming I know which two levels you're talking). The first level you mentioned is the first CTF level made by the author, so you can't expect much there. And I was surprised myself when I first saw the second level. That may have been the first time I've ever seen a CTF level with one base.

Online play is notorious for players who host either Battle Game or one of their second-rate creations. Of course this isn't true for everyone, but people tend to get lazy when it comes to hosting. There are a lot of good packs to host, but they are often left unhosted since a little extra effort is needed to host them--finding a filename seems to be too much work. However, if you have good timing, you can get a chance to see a well-designed level.

Other people will respond to your post later with more scatching remarks than I could think of and will eventually drive you away to... uhh... complain about the GSC4 or something. But I will say a few things:

1: You are complaining about the levels being hosted. Easy solution. Download (or MAKE) something good and host it yourself.
2: For that matter, you're complaining about the servers at a time when nobody's generally playing. You should be aiming for maybe eight hours prior to the time of your posting.
3: "his level also has Freeze Hourglasses in front of either forification, which is quite annoying when you're trying to return the other flag and you end up not moving fast enough to do so." Level name please? That sounds cool.
4: "Okay, I'm anonymus online." Not as true as in most communities. A large percentage of the JJ2'ers have met other JJ2'ers beforehand. We like to get together and chat about stuff.
5: "I refuse to play levels that are single-character centric in Multiplayer mode " Survivor? Your loss.

I'm guessing the "Freeze Hourglasses" level is Chim's "A Bad CTF Level," which she is hosting as I'm posting this.

Avid forum-goer on the Bob & George forums, I take it. And actually, my current thing is reviewing things on Newgrounds and reviewing music here on J2O. So there. Nyah nyah nyah, or something.

Easy solution, yes. But would it really work? How do I know my server would get played upon?

Fair enough.

Chim's "A Bad CTF Level," I guess, according to BlurredD. It's the one with a custom tile set, a bunch of trees, a couple houses, a couple of suction "tubes," and flags on the Northwest and Southeast areas of the map.

I wasn't going to say anything, but the specific person I was talking about earlier was "Your Uncle". I was stuck in Level 6 on Wind Meister 2 last night, and he bragged he was on Level 13, laughing at me, and refusing to help. I find that incredibly rude. The laughing at me part, I mean. I could care less if he chose to help or not, but laughing at me was completely unacceptable. That, and he spoke in generic "Internet lingo". Again, nothing I could do about it. It just looks stupid.

Never heard of it. And I was mostly referring to levels that are character centric and not trick-levels(like Wind Meister). I don't like single-character-centric Combat, CTF, Race, or Treasure levels.

If you leave it up for a few minutes, someone will join. And the more people in the server, the more likely other people are to join. It's a neat process.

Your sarcasm is not appreicated, Administrator. I'm not here to flame or cause trouble. I was simpling ranting earlier today. I'm sorry if that's not allowed on these forums, but I've yet to find a forum where one isn't allowed to express themselves as they feel necessary.

Anyway. . . Server's up. I wish there were a way to change it to a true Dedicated Server(I'm currently using Bean's "JJ2-Dedicated Server" program, but I'm not positive it works. Yet.), but you can't have everything. It'd be nice if people joined and stayed on the server, though. =P

Edit: Yes, ports 10052-10054 are quite open, so that's not an issue.

Is this your one single basis for your rant about bad player behaviour and snobs? It sounds rude what this person did but you can't expect games of any sort (wether they be for adults or younger people) to not contain the occasional uncivilly behaving player. Or even an average amount of these players. You have to learn how to ignore them. I can't say this isn't something of all ages.

If you have lost your faith in playing online, one tip I could give you is to play during the anniversary bash in the beginning of April (watch the news). Usually it's quite a fun event and people are very nice to eachother. The levels will also usually be the best ones around.

It's perfectly allowed as long as you don't post attacks at people. You're inviting sarcasm aimed at you though by talking in a kind of condescending way in some of these posts. You did just say all these people here in the community "have turned into snobbish, elitest morons".

It's this simple. If you want something done or changed you have to do it yourself. As for people being rude, oh yeah I know. You'll just have to deal with it or flame them to heck or something.

Heck, of course we do! Jeez! What planet ARE you guys from? Medivo? ;P

In any case, I have three versions(1.00 g the OEM, Shareware 1.21 s, and the full), and I adore and enjoy every SECOND of them! Heck, I play at least onc a day, and I don't think I'll ever quite get tired of it. It's probably my favorite game, and I know for a fact that the soundtrack is my favorite.

Yes, I am going to eventually beat the single player mode of 1.00g...The coolest thing about Jazz2, to me is the fact that the shareware single player levels are not included in the full version levels. They have their own episode, which is awesome because that shows coolness or something. And you don't have to beat teh shareware levels again when your playing the full version unless you play the Shareware episode.

According to Joseph Collin's statements, it seems as though some of the maps have fallen off a bit since I used to play. I definetly think I can fix that problem because I've made many really good JJ2 maps back in the day. If you aren't satisfied with the maps offered, you should get in the Jazz Creation Station and start making your own! At first it is confusing and difficult to understand. However, once you get the hang of it, I'm sure you'll love it. I know that was one of my favorite aspects of the game!

BTW, my copy hasn't come yet... I'm gonna look around the house to see if I can find that JJ2 CD that I purchased many years ago. Wish me luck.

The shareware levels are in 1.00G. You just need to access them via command line. It would be:

X:\DirectoryOf1.00G\jazz2.exe share1.lev

Simple as that. Though I think that's the name of the first shareware level. An interesting thing I noted is that "Frog Stomp" is called "14 Carrot" in v. 1.00G. Oh, and if you beat the third one, you go to "Jazz in Time."

That's because there's no Witch enemy in this version of Jazz Jackrabbit 2. That, and the tune Lori Central had(has?) marked as "Medivo 2" is used in Colonial Area 2. There are a lot more changes, in fact. The final boss only has one form, for example. I might go into more detail in another topic.

Also. Don't take me too seriously, Quest. I was never a strong part of the Jazz community. I wouldn't really know. I just have bad luck as far as dealing with others, it seems.

Edit: Wait a second. There's another level called "Fourteen Carrot" which is a Carrotus level(I believe), but this one's in Flashback. However, the "Fourteen Carrot"-Diamondus level here(now that I'm playing the 1.00g Shareware episodes) has the Witch enemies. My bad.

With all due respect, in version 1.00G, there was a witch enemy, and Eva, to return from being a frog.
