For those having timeout\disconnection problems, and\or hosting problems

The most likely cause for this is a router, gateway, or firewall. Here is a summary of steps required to fix this problem.

1. First find out what you actually have. If you don't know yourself, ask the most knowledgable computer user in the house whether you have a router, gateway, firewall, or a combination.

2. Tell the same person what you want to do. Say something like "I'm having problems playing a game over the Internet, and support forums online tell me I need to change some settings." After telling them that, show them this following statement of what they need to do:

Open or forward ports 10052 and 10054, both TCP and UDP

3. Having someone else do this is the very best solution. In most cases, the person who set up the router\gateway\software will know the most about the configuration and how to change settings.

4. If the person who you are asking does not know how to change the settings or this particular setting, tell them to read the manual. The manual or documentation included is the best place to find out how to configure it.

5. If - and only if - nobody in your household has any clue how to do this, AND you have read the manual cover to cover and still haven't been able to figure it out, OR you've found out the correct way but it doesn't work, you should post here for help.

6. There is some information you do need to include when you post, which is very easy to get.

- Find out the manufacturer, name, and model number of your router if you have a router. If you don't know this, it will be right on the actual piece of hardware.

- Find out the name of your firewall program if you are using a firewall, or specify if you are using the Windows XP firewall

- If you are on a network, include the number of computers on your network, what operating system is on each (and specify which computer you wish to play JJ2 on), and if possible the IP address and gateway address on that computer.

7. Post your problem, and all this information, in this forum. The information is easy to get, so there is absolutely no reason why you can't get it, but if you can't, post as much as you can. (To keep clutter down, post as a new topic, not as a reply in this topic)

8. The people here will reply to your post, and will ask you questions and give you certain procedures to try. Answer these questions in detail, and give detailed results of the procedures. This is very important in quickly diagnosing and correcting the problem.

Notice that there was a lot of emphasis on reading the documentation and asking people who configured the network. This is because these sources are much more likely to know how to solve the problem than we are. The advice RTXM holds true (Replace R with "Read", T with "The", M with "Manual", and X with the emphasis adjective of your choice)

If it is not a nuisance to you, would you also be able to post this (copy and paste) as an article on J2O? This is some useful information. Thank you for posting this.

I found a program while I was surfing on the web.

http://download.com.com/3000-2085-10...nch&tag=launch

Quote from the page:
Port Magic takes the complexity out of playing multiplayer games by automatically configuring your Internet gateway to let you connect with friends and fellow players. Port Magic automatically manages port forwarding settings on popular Internet gateways so you can spend more time gaming. Through a simple, "instant messaging" style interface, it notifies you when games are trying to access the Internet and ensures the security of your network by automatically closing ports when you're done playing.

WHAT I HAVE TO ADD FROM MYSELF:

For some gateways, you also have to open the 2000-3000 range of ports and forward the range to your computer. Like it was on mine (D-LINK).

You opened over 1000 ports?!
This seems to be a big security risk.

Does anyone know which exact ports to open, if it still doesn't work with 10052 and 10054 (tcp + udp)? Or are really more than 1000 ports required to fix my disconnection problems?

JJ2 connects to ports 10052 TCP\UDP, 10053 TCP, and 10054 TCP. It hosts on port 10052 TCP\UDP.

You shouldn't need to open another range of ports, but if it works I guess it works. It might be something to do with how TCP\IP connections work - there is a source port number randomly selected on the computer making the connection. But a router\gateway should be able to handle this without additional forwarding (because it works for HTTP, etc, which also use TCP\IP).

It is not over, it is exactly 1000 ports.
I did not open them, I forwarded them to my computer.

Link,
you might be right... When I posted this, I had my connection wire poorly connected, now I fill try to disconnect it. And I'll see what happens.

2000-3000 are 1001 ports.
Forwarding still causes a small risk in security, especially if you don't use a firewall at the PC you are forwarding the ports to.

@ Link: Nobody has ever mentionned port 10053 in my presence. I'll add this port to my forwarding list and try if it'll works when I will have time (maybe tomorrow). Thank you.

Ye, I do have a firewall,
and BTW, after I removed the 2000-3000 port forwarding and reconnected all the cable wires, it started working perfectly!

Hey, let me state it clear:
1. I did not know that the word *** is filtered, therefore I did not try to bypass it.
2. I wrote signs like $,# and so on inside of that word because that's how you mask the word in chats, or anywhere - so it wouldn't look as bad. Not because of the filter.

Port Magic has been updated, which is why it is unavailable. It can be found here:

http://download.com.com/3000-2085-10...ml?tag=lst-0-1

This tool solved my problem and I highly recommend it. It works on the largest brands of routers and for most every application. It is a limited trial, with nag windows, but settings it applies are kept.

I get disconnected also after about a minute of playing. My internet (ADSL) just goes offline but leaves the indicator in the system tray that it is still on. No internet things work though (ICQ, IE, messenger, other games) and I can't reconnect without restarting my comp.
I got windows 98 and no firewall, router or gateway.

this worked very very well.
I re-installed jazz but found that the server I would host was listed as pinging
(I had someone check). After this was applied it was fixed.
Thanks for keeping this on top.

An easy way to figure out your IP Address is to go to: Start Button-Run-ipconfig. If that doesn't work, then go to: Start Button-Run-cmd. Then type in 'ipconfig'.

And make sure you type in your IP, when opening/forwarding ports. NOT the DEFAULT Gateway!

That's the mistake I made, and then realized it long afterwards. Like when I asked my Intro to Java teacher for help!

Read the main post of this topic, on how to open ports.

BTW, if your still having trouble, catch me on AIM: DFX987, MSN: jjtublear@hotmail.com, or PM me, and I'll try to assist you.

If you still can't play or host online games then....AFTER you opened/forwarded your ports, go here: http://www.jazz2online.com/jcf/showthread.php?t=11660

Okay, now many people have had this problem before, but not in the same situation. I've been looking around for quite a while and haven't been able to figure out the answer to my problem. Whenever I host a game, it never stops pinging. I didn't realize that my server was pinging before until recently when my friend said he wasn't able to join because my server was pinging. I can, however, join online games. My Jazz version is 1.24, I've opened ports 10052-10054, and I have Windows XP-- (I also already have my Windows XP firewall disabled.) Can anyone figure out what's wrong?

So here's a question.

If JJ2 runs off of ports 10052, 10053, and 10054 TCP, where did I get the information to forward 10052-10057? Do the extra three ports do/mean anything?

That reminds me of the problems I still have. My servers won't stop pinging, and I get 30 second timeouts... you did forward ports 10052-10054 right?

10055-10057 are actually used by jj2 server lists so the are sometimes unnecessarily included in the list - doesn't really make a difference but you don't need to open them unless you run a list server.

10052 TCP and UDP - used by JJ2 for all ingame communication
10053 - binary list server information, jj2 itself checks the list servers on this information
10054 (don't remember if both TCP and UDP are required) - gets you hosted on the list servers when hosting

10055 - used by the server lists to send statistics on the list server itself
10056 - used by the server lists to sync with each other (correct me if wrong)
10057 - ASCII server list output. Generally (but there are other ways) this is used to get join links from php scripts etc.

Yes, there's an easy solution:

Step 1: Ignore everything else posted in this thread, especially the first post.

Actual answer: Try to figure out Link's first post. It helps if you know how you access your firewall/router.

This is really not-cool: first, i used to host World War JJ2.. i still can play online. But hosting my server will not place my server in the GIP.htm list (yes, yes, i have refreshed it:P) and that's why nobody comes in any more! do you know what the problem is??

I'd assume it's being listed on the USA list servers, which are apparently up, but don't show on any GIP.

Using port forwarding, only one person on your home network would be able to host or play. Either way, if you still have trouble after setting up ports, you could try using a tool like Jazztool (it's the only way I can join) or check your modem if it may be blocking something. If all else fails, ask your ISP.
