Posible event: 1.23 and TSF Combiner

I've been doing some research on JJ2 and I think it is possible to make a 1.23 + TSF JJ2 fully working combo or at least according to results from my Jazz 2 research.
Actually I already managed to get it working on my PC but now I just need to do some testing before I can move any further which includes making a combiner program for these 2 versions and releasing it.

So I'm not 100% sure yet but most likely it will work properly.

Vote the poll.

EDIT: 1.23 + TSF combo = both versions in the same directory.

So, u mean Have 1.23 (regular version) combines with TSF? Do u mean that by installing TSF with 1.23 in a combo so that we have Lori episodes and selectible versions in the Menu like an option that says:

1.23
or
TSF

And you can choose what system you can play on in one version of Jazz2?

If it is, GO RIGHT AHEAD!

Well actually it won't, Piccolo. The advantage is that both versions will be able to share levels, tilesets and music which can save quite some disk space. I'm also gonna include some launchers.

Indeed, it's a good idea, and it'll also break apart those failure programs that don't actually work as a combiner.

Judging by the past success of similar programs that try to convert between 1.23 and 1.24 and back (1.24 to 1.23 JCS is a good example), this probably will be buggy at first. I still like the idea, though.

What about the animation file? Wouldn't the animations from both version conflict? Or are the animations the same?

The conflict is (I think) that both animation files carry the same name and Jazz 2 only looks for it as "anims.j2a." Having them in the same directory would cause one version to stop working because it can not read from the correct anims.j2a, among other files.

I actually combined 1.24/1.23/1.24x some time ago, and it worked fine. Problem is indeed with the anims.j2a.

(You either have to chose for the one of 1.23 or 1.24.

Don't worry, people I've got it working pretty well. Yea. The anims,j2a aws the problem but not when I realized I can rename it, heh heh.

The combo launcher I am working on is pretty much done now. I am just 3 steps away from releasing the instructins and tools for the job.

I thought the animations would pose a problem. Are you going to try combining them? Renaming them? If you rename them, how will Jazz2 know what to look for?

[EDIT] - OIC! You use a launcher that lets you pick the jazz2 you want to play. Depending on which one you play, depends on how the renaming will go. (ex. You want to play jazz2 TSF, so you rename animes.old to animes.j2a and rename the other animes.j2a to animes.old). The only problem with this would be that if the user wants to play the SAME jazz2 twice in a row, the wrong animation file would be renamed. I don't see how you will get around that.

I did that once...

I had a 1.23-TSF combo once. It didn't work. Why?:

Bad things about combo.
1. I tried to uninstall both versions. First I uninstalled TSF. The files were deleted. When I tried to uninstall 1.23, "File not found: Uninst.isu". This is not gonna work, sorry pals.
2. I was able to make ONLY TSF levels.
3. Custom episode files doesn't fit on screen, Access Violation.

Good things about combo.
1. You can use Lori in the official SP/COOP levels.
2. You don't need to change games when you play the official SP/COOP levels and want to play the TSF episode.

It won't work, sorry Look at the bad things to know why...

That's probably because the jazz2 screen for the original jazz2 has a full episode list that fills the screen. Adding TSF would cause it to go overboard.

Actually, I believe Jazz 2 can store one or two more episodes off-page before crashing.

Well, I have something like that on my PC. Using Hex Editor I made 1.23 from 1.24 and named it Jazz2w.exe. That way I could put it in the same directory as 1.24. Now I can join 1.23 servers, but I can't host them and I can't make 1.23 tilesets. Plus JSZ Lori won't play 1.23. :P Maybe I look strange for 1.23 players and they look strange to me, but that isn't a big problem.

Okay. I've got almost everything working and the project is nearly finished. Before I release it I need to test it and I thought it'd be good if I choose more people to do the testing.

So I need a betatester. Anyone interested and ready to take the risk to be the first one to get his hands on the combiner program?

This sounds like a really useful program. Only one problem (with me), I don't have TSF. Is there a way to get it free off the internet... without doing something illegal?

If there were a 1.23 and TSF combo, what would you do with the tilesets that wont work in 1.23 but in TSF? It'd be like the one patch that was made by someone and Cliffy turned it down.

But I'm just guessing, I probably missed something...

Guess so, since you need BOTH versions to run the program.

By the way, I'd like to be a betatester then.

Okay, ppl. Here it is. I decided to skip the last planned program and finish the project before it delays even more. For just in case of any trouble I decided to keep the files off J2O... for now. You can find the files on my website but I advice you not to use them if you are new to jazz.

So???

Talking

it realy works

first i didnt notice any difference between just two extra links and the combo launcher, but when i tried jcs 1.23 i clould open all my TSF tilesets. the zipfile also contains easy step by step instructions.

just one thing i wanted to ask: is the backup of the jazz2 TSF exe included? because i found a Jazz2.exe.bak file in my tsf folder that i didnt notice before.

great job!

BTW: this program is only useful for the ppl who have both versions of jazz: 1.23 and TSF
and for the crazy ppl who are addicted to Jazz Jackrabbit stuff and already have 3 gig of stuff on ther HDD.

Yea. When you patch files with the CodeFusion (the one I used) you can choose to make backups and in this case they end with *.bak extension. Just restore to exe to undo the changes.
