JJ3&B Thread 2: Violence

(still working on megathread)

Part 2 of Jazz Jackrabbit 3 & Beyond thread.

What rating should future games have? I have consulted www.esrb.org to find out how they determine their ratings. I would like replies to follow my example with further comments at the bottom of the list.

My thoughts: (descriptions can be found here.)

Alcohol Reference - No. Don't need alcohol in a Jazz game.
Animated Blood - Possibly. I think animated blood is usually green, not sure.
Blood - No, animated blood will be fine.
Blood and Gore - Absolutely not. It isn't needed.
Cartoon Violence - Yes, absolutely.
Comic Mischief - Yes, absolutely.
Crude Humor - No, it would cheapen the game.
Drug Reference - No, even though they smoke pot. (they do! look at their eyes!)
Edutainment - God, no.
Fantasy Violence - Obviously. This is how all Jazz games will be.
Informational - I suppose if you like learning about the Jazz universe this wouldn't hurt :P
Intense Violence - No. Not needed.
Language - Depends. Obviously not the 7 words you can't say on TV.
Lyrics - Jazz Jackrabbit music should never have lyrics. Not a problem.
Mature Humor - Heh, no.
Mild Violence - Absolutely ++unsafe situations
Nudity - Jazz will always be nude. This does not say anything about anatomical parts, which would be a no. :P
Partial Nudity - Maybe...
Real Gambling - No.
Sexual Themes - Do kisses count?
Sexual Violence - No.
Simulated Gambling - Possibly. Would add something to the game.
Some Adult Assistance May Be Needed - No.
Strong Language - No.
Strong Lyrics - No.
Strong Sexual Content - No.
Suggestive Themes - Maybe.
Tobacco Reference - "Smoked that turtle like a Marlboro!" j/k :P
Use of Drugs - No.
Use of Alcohol - No.
Use of Tobacco - No.
Violence - Maybe. Do broken bones count? :X

In conclusion, I think the next and future games should be rated T (Teen). Not many people under 13 play JJ2. They can wait. The rest of us will get a game that has more depth and gameplay that will be able to compete with the big sellers.

I would like to see more physical contact fighting in addition to the gun. I can just imagine Jazz being good at kicking with those feet. :P

Don't know what else to say...

A lot of us JJ2'ers started at a very young age, and I think if there was another Jazz game it should keep its all age friendly style. honestly I dont think Blood and Violence make a game, gameplay does.

I have nothing against blood in games, but it doesn't fit in a comic-style game, which Jazz is and should stay.

What would happens if there would be blood in the game? The game would be banned from people younger than 18, so I voted "no"

I think you all are missing the point.

You're supposed to make a list like I did and give your input on it.

There is more issues than just blood. And I said "Animated Blood" possibly. I quite clearly said real blood was not an option in my opinion.

Lol. Skull is 12... I think.

JJ2 did appeal to younger ppl, so JJ3 must be E rated, like JJ1 and JJ2.

Alcohol Reference - Reference to and/or images of alcoholic beverages - I don't see how this would be needed. Not like Jazz is an alcoholic.

Animated Blood - Discolored and/or unrealistic depictions of blood - Probably. What else would happen when Jazz shot someone?

Blood - Depictions of blood - In a Cartoon game? Nah

Blood and Gore - Depictions of blood or the mutilation of body parts - Same view as the previous

Cartoon Violence - Violent actions involving cartoon-like situations and characters. May include violence where a character is unharmed after the action has been inflicted - Yeah, definately.

Comic Mischief - Depictions or dialogue involving slapstick or suggestive humor - Probably.

Crude Humor - Depictions or dialogue involving vulgar antics, including “bathroom” humor - No.

Drug Reference - Reference to and/or images of illegal drugs - After a game where little kid played it? Pff no

Fantasy Violence - Violent actions of a fantasy nature, involving human or non-human characters in situations easily distinguishable from real life - Maybe.

Informational - Overall content of product contains data, facts, resource information, reference materials or instructional text - Nah

Intense Violence - Graphic and realistic-looking depictions of physical conflict. May involve extreme and/or realistic blood, gore, weapons, and depictions of human injury and death - Wouldn't really fit the situation, so no.

Language - Mild to moderate use of profanity - JJ2 had (-) and Hell, so I guess so.

Lyrics - Mild references to profanity, sexuality, violence, alcohol, or drug use in music - Not needed.

Mature Humor - Depictions or dialogue involving "adult" humor, including sexual references - In a game featuring a green bunny as a character? Probably not.

Mild Violence - Mild scenes depicting characters in unsafe and/or violent situations ) - Yep.

Nudity - Graphic or prolonged depictions of nudity - OMG LORI PORN! (no)
Partial Nudity - Brief and/or mild depictions of nudity - Maybe. (Jazz looking at playboy, heh)

Real Gambling - Player can gamble, including betting or wagering real cash or currency - Nah

Sexual Themes - Mild to moderate sexual references and/or depictions. May include partial nudity - Depends how mild.

Sexual Violence - Depictions of rape or other sexual acts - Ahahahaha no.

Simulated Gambling - Player can gamble without betting or wagering real cash or currency - Don't care. If it fits the situation of the game, sure, but No for going the extra mile and shaping the game to include it.

Some Adult Assistance May Be Needed - Intended for very young ages - What the? No.

Strong Language - Explicit and/or frequent use of profanity - Probably not.

Strong Lyrics - Explicit and/or frequent references to profanity, sex, violence, alcohol, or drug use in music - Will JJ3 music even HAVE lyrics?

Alcohol Reference - Reference to and/or images of alcoholic beverages - No way

Animated Blood - Discolored and/or unrealistic depictions of blood - Well, JJ1 had green turtle blood in an episode cinematic... Only once... Let's keep it at that.

Blood - Depictions of blood - *coughs* No

Blood and Gore - Depictions of blood or the mutilation of body parts - ditto

Cartoon Violence - Violent actions involving cartoon-like situations and characters. May include violence where a character is unharmed after the action has been inflicted - Kinda unavoidable, we're talking about Jazz here, the "small rabbit with a big gun"

Comic Mischief - Depictions or dialogue involving slapstick or suggestive humor - Only the first (slapstick).

Crude Humor - Depictions or dialogue involving vulgar antics, including “bathroom” humor - Does Spaz eating that bird count?

Drug Reference - Reference to and/or images of illegal drugs - drugs aren't illegal for nothing...

Edutainment - Content of product provides user with specific skills development or reinforcement learning within an entertainment setting. Skill development is an integral part of product - "Counting with Jazz Jackrabbit?" anyone? No? Ok.

Fantasy Violence - Violent actions of a fantasy nature, involving human or non-human characters in situations easily distinguishable from real life - See Cartoon humor.

Informational - Overall content of product contains data, facts, resource information, reference materials or instructional text - Nope, unless you want an encyclopedia with "jackrabbit" and "snapping turtle"

Intense Violence - Graphic and realistic-looking depictions of physical conflict. May involve extreme and/or realistic blood, gore, weapons, and depictions of human injury and death - "Realistic" is the key word here. No.

Language - Mild to moderate use of profanity - The only profanities I've seen are in one song and one tileset name of JJ2, so they're both behind the stages and not that noticable. Remember the ice level's name (A Cold Day in Heck)? "Heck" is considered far less objectionable then... you know.

Lyrics - Mild references to profanity, sexuality, violence, alcohol, or drug use in music - Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, and Sonic Heroes had lyrics, not of the kind mentioned (tho I have to admit, "What I'm made of..." is really cheesy...). It can be done...

Mature Humor - Depictions or dialogue involving "adult" humor, including sexual references - This isn't South Park or anything like that, so no.

Mild Violence - Mild scenes depicting characters in unsafe and/or violent situations ) - See Cartoon Violence.

Nudity - Graphic or prolonged depictions of nudity - What's with those categories anyway?

Partial Nudity - Brief and/or mild depictions of nudity - Aside from Eva's short dress (cleavage folks), no.

Real Gambling - Player can gamble, including betting or wagering real cash or currency - You're kidding me, right?

Sexual Themes - Mild to moderate sexual references and/or depictions. May include partial nudity - See above.

Sexual Violence - Depictions of rape or other sexual acts - Yet again, see above.

Simulated Gambling - Player can gamble without betting or wagering real cash or currency - Maybe on the side, not a mandatory part of the game. Lufia II had gambling games that weren't mandatory and easily skipped, just for extra cash.

Some Adult Assistance May Be Needed - Intended for very young ages - I wouldn't wanna go that low...

Strong Language - Explicit and/or frequent use of profanity - Not needed, Jazz can let his gun do the talking... hehe... no.

Strong Lyrics - Explicit and/or frequent references to profanity, sex, violence, alcohol, or drug use in music - (cont. from "Lyrics") ...but let's keep it clean.

Strong Sexual Content - Graphic references to and/or depictions of sexual behavior, possibly including nudity - No.

Suggestive Themes - Mild provocative references or materials - Ehm... no.

Tobacco Reference - Reference to and/or images of tobacco products - "mommy, can I have some " You wish >.>

Use of Drugs - The consumption or use of illegal drugs - Caterpillar in Wonderland... aside from that, no.

Use of Alcohol - The consumption of alcoholic beverages - No.

Use of Tobacco - The consumption of tobacco products - No.

Violence - Scenes involving aggressive conflict - In a teaspoon: unavoidable. You saw the JJ2 intro, did you not?

Well, here's my list. Enjoy.

Alcohol Reference - Reference to and/or images of alcoholic beverages - Maybe. I can see it, in scenes involving, say, the War Tavern or something.

Animated Blood - Discolored and/or unrealistic depictions of blood - I think it would likely be better if the enemies "exploded" as in JJ2.

Blood - Depictions of blood - Only if necessary.

Blood and Gore - Depictions of blood or the mutilation of body parts - No.

Cartoon Violence - Violent actions involving cartoon-like situations and characters. May include violence where a character is unharmed after the action has been inflicted - Yes.

Comic Mischief - Depictions or dialogue involving slapstick or suggestive humor - I'm with JelZe on this one. Only the slapstick.

Crude Humor - Depictions or dialogue involving vulgar antics, including “bathroom” humor - Not necessary.

Drug Reference - Reference to and/or images of illegal drugs - No.

Edutainment - Content of product provides user with specific skills development or reinforcement learning within an entertainment setting. Skill development is an integral part of product - No.

I don't understand why some of you wouldn't mind tobacco references. :P

Aren't we trying to discourage people from smoking? Jazz is not gonna light one up and blow smoke.

On another note I'm surprised no one responded to my "Jazz and Spaz smoke pot" comment. :P

In response to "Real Gambling" I would say no, but you would have to be over 18.

"Simulated Gambling" you could have a slot machine and get special bonuses in the game.

That would be fine. Sonic's been doing that since day one. Or day two. I'm not sure.
In any case, I pretty much agree with everyone else, and see no reason to repost the list.

The Pokemon games (OMG BJARNI) had casinos in them. They began just using slots (Red, Blue, Yellow), then added some weird card game (Gold, Silver, Crystal), then dropped the card game and added Roulette (Ruby, Sapphire).

Unless i'm misunderstood, Pokemon's marketed to younger kids. Therefore, stuff like slot machines would be fine.

That's just the thing, though.

I'm asking you if we should ditch the E rating for better gameplay of our age group. The rating T would be perfect.

Jazz started out as E. I don't think it has a need to move out of that rating, but a T would probably also be fine for the target audience.

Alcohol Reference - No. Wouldn't fit
Animated Blood - Mabey, if you're going to have blood, making it different colors is just stupid unless its logical (eg a bug or sotmhing)
Blood - Mabey. ESRB has been known to consider reddish puffs of smoke to be blood (Star Fox Adventures) while considering blue, green and red (not together, just from different creatures) drops and splatters to not even be considered animated blood (Zelda 64).
Blood and Gore - No. Bloody chunks in a Jazz game? That stuff needs should just stay in UT.
Cartoon Violence - Yes. Duh.
Comic Mischief - Yes. Of course Jazz has to have some humor.
Crude Humor - Mabey. Once again it depends on what day of the week the ESRB would rate it.
Drug Reference - Mabey. The catterpiller in JJ2 was smaoking somthing wierd O.O.
Edutainment - No. This game is supposed to be fun, right?
Fantasy Violence - Yes. Dur.
Informational - No. The description wasn't very clear. I'm guessing Age of Empires type information. Kinda hard to get facts out of a game about alien rabbits :P
Intense Violence - No. Isn't this the same as blood and gore?
Language - Yes. Probably, JJ2 had a few words.
Lyrics - No. God no, this is an area where JJ2 should definatly not try to imate Sonic.
Mature Humor - No. It's about cartoon bunnies!
Mild Violence - Yes. Dur.
Nudity - No. Cartoon animals aren't nood unless they have erm... things...
Partial Nudity - No. See above
Real Gambling - No.
Sexual Themes - No. No rabbit hentai, please.
Sexual Violence - No!!! lets not even think about that one.
Simulated Gambling - Mabey. Slot machine things like Pokemon or some older Mario games could be worked in pretty well.
Some Adult Assistance May Be Needed - No...
Strong Language - No.
Strong Lyrics - No.
Strong Sexual Content - No.
Suggestive Themes - Maybe. Depends on the day of the week.
Tobacco Reference - No.
Use of Drugs - No.
Use of Alcohol - No.
Use of Tobacco - No.
Violence - Mabey. Depends on the day of the week :P

Just give the cigars to the enemies. It'll give the little kids the message "smoke and a guy with a gun will come along and shoot you into little colorful bits!"

It seems that mostly teens or people who are nearly teens are the ones still interested in this game, so it wouldn't kill off many people if it was T rated.
