There’s not a lot of level design flow here. You kind of wander around, maybe collecting a bunch of goodies, maybe jumping over some enemies, not sure if you’re going the right direction, and suddenly there’s an exit. But what’s interesting about this pack is how much Talec is (already, in 1999) pushing up against the limits of what the game is supposed to support. Frogs, invisible enemies, secret levels, next level settings. (You’re asked repeatedly to use the JJNXT cheat code in order not to break the secret level bool, though in 2022, we know that using other events could have avoided this issue.) And there’s something thematically fitting about the pack’s focus on secret levels in light of how some of those features are kind of secrets within JJ2. The first level is an edit of psych3, an unfinished secret level, if not the most interesting one. There are more pickups, the warp target doesn’t go where I’d expect it go, but nothing truly remarkable. In general the disappointing factor in this pack is that secret levels are never really treated as a reward. Talec learns from Labrat3 that secret levels are supposed to involve turning into a bird, but there aren’t the profusion of goodies you’d expect from a JJ1 secret level. And you need a secret level to have some kind of desirable experience or else the player is actually working to their advantage to skip it, because they save time that way.

This level is alright.

GAMEPLAY:

The layout is good, but I question it. I can get around the level alright, but I’m not for the platforms in it. The wall jumping thing is nice, but I suppose someone could get stuck in it. It’s not that big a deal though, and I haven’t got stuck yet. What I’m really wondering about is the balance. The bases are placed in opposite cornors of the level. I guess this is alright since there is a warp near the blue base at the bottom which could occasionally take a player very close to the red base at the top (or some other random spot in the level or a +1 carrot). I can live with this (maybe).

EYE CANDY:

It’s good, just not too spectacular. But in reality, the branches are being held up by nothing and defy the laws of gravity. But that’s ok since you need those platforms and the whole game doesn’t make much sense anyway.

CARROT AND AMMO PLACEMENT:

Well, there are +1 carrots placed throughout the level. That’s not my favorite way to use carrots and it makes the level slightly more suited for battle mode (I more often than not end up using one or two full energy carrots). It’s not the worse thing, but you have to get used to it. Anyway, the ammo placement is alright, along with the powerups.

HOST THIS OFTEN?

Once or twice. Not too addictive. Though I definitely like this level more than your past levels. I’m thinking 7.5 as my rating.

Nicely done. It would probably get repeatitive after a while, though… I’ll give this a 7.0.

Hehe, cool. I really like the idea behind this level. Reminds me of my favourite pinball games from the old days: Pinball Fantasies (yay!), Epic Pinball (featuring music by Robert Allen), Extreme PB, Psycho PB, Pro PB and so on…well, back to the review.

As we all know, Carrottus is very overused and therefore not my favourite tileset choice. Nevertheless, the author really tried his best here…to rebuild a pinball table with all kinds of targets, rewards, traps and the like. I only miss some LCD mini games ;-)

Seriously, i don’t have a lot of experience in rating pinball levels for Jazz Jackrabbit 2 but i guess the design is pretty good…it only could need some more eyecandy in my opinion. The default race background music fits okay.

Well, i really don’t know how to rate this. Lets say 6.5, okay?

In any case, it’s DEFiNiTELY WORTH THE DOWNLOAD because the idea is really, really ORiGiNAL. Clean your Shift keys, left and right! :-)

“The Noodle” is a very small tileset (about 70 tiles) featuring some yellow tube structures, an animated, bubbling sauce pot and a red (tomato sauce) background (as some other reviewers already found out :-). Thats about it, sorry. I’m not sure, but i think the possibilites of a level author are quite limited when using this tileset. Maybe this is the the proof (in short):
The battle level’s name fits perfectly and has a wrong next level setting. The example level (“Pasta Playground”) is even more dull. The “Fasta Pasta” race level can be fun, though. There even is some design and discreet eyecandy. Nevertheless, it is way too short (not even one minute per lap). The music file used in all three levels sounds a bit too much like the average Amiga Protracker MOD (don’t like it too much :-).

Anyways, i’m willing to give this a relatively high rating because i like the idea (kinda funny) and the decision to make a race(!) level. Maybe you can work on it a bit more (create a GOOD battle level for example!). To download or not to download, that is the question (i can not answer).

A comment to the comment of you Talec:

The eyecandy that could go in here, perhaps sauce (you could easily make destruct tiles with that too) and A big head that eats stuff or something.

Second: Lately its getting a bit better, but usually Jazz 2 is filled with newbies (no offence though) who have not seen many levels and are not at all good at designing them themselves so they go around and are impressed by every level they see.

Its just like the fact that some people base their reviews solely on the reviews of others or even if they like it still rate low if others rate low.

(that is no personal offence, usually if a lot of people say a level is good then its good and same with bad, but still).

Hmm. Reply comments time..

Stilettø-

It’s missing stuff? Okay, I’ll add the stuff and reupload it.

Boring Battle – The level name was a joke. You just have to take this as a joke, not a serious project.

Pasta was a test level. I liked the beginning look of it, and some people (me, for example) like editing levels, so I thought I would release it to the Jazzers so they can fool with it.

SPLASHcc-

What kind of background tiles could go in a pasta set? But then, I can’t think up decent background scenery to save my life :/

I may redo Fasta Pasta in the future.

Fl@$h-
The reason it looks unprofessional is because it’s not supposed to look professional :P Dang, I thought I made this clear in the readme >_<

BlackDeath-
THank you! Finally! I admit I was rather expecting a more welcoming download committee (Wait… Is there such a thing? :P), since this level and set had gotten pretty darn good remarks when I hosted it in Jazz2.

Sorry about the wrong level settings. Just about all Battle levels I have a linked in a chain of levels for my server, and I keep forgetting to change the Next Level when I go to upload something.

Questions: What kind of eye candy can go into a pasta set? Also, what design should destruct scenery blocks be in? The normal stony ones wouldn’t look good in this cartoony set.

I must say I disagree with everyone here.

The levels are pretty well designed, a bit of emptyness, less eyecandy and wrong next level settings, but still.

I would recommend downloading this…

Maybe its just me :)
