EvilMike and Dizzy helped out a bit. I also must credit the people who made the tilesets and the other people who made the music, whom I am too lazy to mention by name at the moment (but I definitely will next time, I promise).

Description

Before I start with my description, let me quote this from FQuist: “Please do not upload demos. Only upload something when it’s ready. This download will be deleted within a few days.” Well, it is ready after a whole lot of work (and I mean a whole lot of work). And if it isn’t good enough (an absolutely absurd presumption) then may this demo be deleted before anyone can even have a chance to download it.At last the demo you all {haven’t} been waiting for. This just happens to be my first successful attempt at making an SP pack, and I would have to say it’s pretty good. Pretty good may actually be an understatement. I tried some new stuff as usual, although I’m not 100% sure of what’s been done already or not. I didn’t include any carrots, gems, or fast fires since you can get all of those from shooting enemies. I also limited the amount of ammo (and by a lot) so be careful how you use it. And it’s meant to be hard. If you die at least five times, then I did my job. These levels are a little preview of what’s to come, assuming I ever get around to it. I think I may just want to have the greatest demo ever released on J2O. Anyway, I included five levels and an intro. You can play on easy, normal, or hard. There isn’t too much of a storyline since in the full pack there would be additional levels in between the five that I did include, but you’ll get the general idea. Try not to ruin too much in your reviews. Don’t play this pack online since it will not work at all. And if you haven’t already, stop reading this and start downloading. Enjoy.BTW, only easy mode comes with extra lives. And as an extra challenge, try beating it without saving.

I find “If you find it too hard to beat or if you had to cheat a lot to get past all of the levels, don’t bother reviewing this pack.” a pretty stupid argument. Levels are supposed to be fun, and when they are not fun any more because they’re just too damn impossible to beat they’re bad, it’s as simple as that. Of course, when an inexperienced player doesn’t manage to solve a puzzle or beat a level it’s a different story, but I consider myself experienced enough to have the skills necessary to play through a fair single player level.

The levels in this demo, however good they may look, commit the 3 worst crimes a JJ2 single player level can commit:

1. They contain enemies that are impossible to avoid.
2. Expecting the player to do things they do not know they need to do.
3. Having a GIANT difference in difficulty between playing with Spaz and playing with Jazz.

For example, in the first level, I did not understand what the pits were about, so I jumped in them, expecting to land on another platform. Wrong! Instant death. Okay, lesson learned, on to the next part. At a certain point in the level one needs to jump from a treetop down to a small hole in the trunk near the bottom of the level. Problem is, there is no way the player can know he needs to jump into this hole until he has actually jumped, because the spot is invisible beforehand. And because it is invisible, I expected jumping down would make me land safely on a platform since there didn’t seem to be any other possibility.

The rest of the levels are full of problems like this. Very nice concepts such as the “time trial” thing involving a sugar rush, in the “Flames of Fury” level, are ruined because you can only find out what you are actually supposed to do by failing first. When I then found out that I needed to complete a certain part of the level within the 20 seconds a sugar rush lasts, I managed to get to the “normal” part of the level only to find edge after edge which you need to jump down from onto a out-of-sight platform full of enemies which you just can’t avoid because you haven’t seen them yet.

A lot of the levels have great parts in which you are required to jump from platform to platform, and missing a jump spells instant death. However, as Jazz’s helicopter ear ability gives you far more time to manoeuvre yourself to the right spot, playing the levels in this pack with Jazz is a zillion times easier than playing it with Spaz. At the same time some parts or jumps are just plain impossible without a doublejump. Another apparent oversight.

Anyway, I could go on for a while like this. It’s really too bad that the bad parts greatly overshadow the good parts. The levels do indeed look extremely good, and they do indeed contain innovative concepts and puzzles. Problem is, they’re just not fun too play. Between all fancy stuff you’ll just end up frustrated because you constantly get hurt or killed without being able to do anything about it. And that’s why these levels are, indeed, bad.

IMO i think this demo is pretty difficult, yet boring, not really any change in the scenery, just pits and thats it. Nothing special.

Music: Not bad

Gameplay: 7.2 Its rather difficult to jump from platform to platform without falling and dying

Eyecandy: 7 Not anything special, but not bad

Originality: 8 its really good the way you thought of this.

Overall: Its ok, download recomedation for those people who like SP levels that have a bit of a challenge and a little boring :P

Overall i give this a 7.5[This review has been edited by KILLERRABBIT]

@ BlurredD i didnt cheat on any of it, except supreme fast fire for my toaster >)But i never liked it that much, sorry about blowin up at ya and i played all the levels, and i found it boring so i skipped the rest and end.[This review has been edited by KILLERRABBIT]

After a while, I wasn’t expecting this download to get another review ever again.

Stijn aka Fl@$h: Looking back (and after playing some of the levels that would’ve gone into the full version), I have to agree with you on a lot of points. Yeah, they’re probably too hard for their own good, though I wouldn’t go as far as saying they are outright “bad” (that comment still stings a little, but I see your point). I would add a lot more text sign hints and warnings as well as remove excess pits and traps if I ever decided to fix up these levels. I’d need much more encouragement before that happens, though. Anyway, I appreciate the brutal honesty in your review, Stijn.

Previous comments:

I wasn’t going to say anything for a while, but Killerrabbit just got on my bad side. If I had to guess, either you didn’t play all of it or you cheated through most of the levels. I don’t know how this could get a 7.2 for gameplay if jumping from platform to platform is half of the challenge (as in a lot of SP packs) and I did say it would be hard. I don’t know if you played the 4th and 5th levels, but I couldn’t focus on using a lot of pits as the only challenge (as you can clearly see). There are a few puzzles here and there which you somehow seemed to miss entirely. Maybe you should play the entire pack again. If you find it boring, then you’re not one of the people who like a good challenge. And no scenery change? It might not be too drastic in these levels, but it is noticable. So, if you can actually do a much better job with “changes in scenary” then be my guest and show me up. I’d like to see what you can do in JCS.

But I digress. I shouldn’t be too angry. I neglected to add one warning: If you find it too hard to beat or if you had to cheat a lot to get past all of the levels, don’t bother reviewing this pack. These levels weren’t made so that just anyone could be able to beat them.

mikeejimbo: Annoying intro? Maybe because of the short delay at the start or the abrupt level change at the end, but I neglected to fix that before I uploaded the pack (and the latter isn’t easily fixable). I haven’t seen anyone make an intro playble in JJ2 nearly as innovative as the one I made. I was planning on making an entirely different intro for the full pack in any case (and hopefully I’ll find an even better way of doing it).

Inf. Spaz: The 4th and 5th levels might be more like other SP levels, but that’s only because those are less linear. But I did add some interesting challenges to those levels which I have never seen quite like this before in any other pack (the puzzle in the 4th level, for example). And adding vertical play to the first 3 levels wouldn’t make them any more fun to play—just longer. BTW, if you could name several of these train levels that you say you have plenty of, it would be greatly appreciated.

On a side note: Play on Easy mode if you’re having a lot of problems trying to beat the levels. Easy mode is almost like Normal in the typical SP pack. I even added an extra save point in the 4th level, just to let you know.

The intro was kind of annoying, I must admit.

I won’t review this yet, because I haven’t played it too much.

Uhhh, I don’t think its right to rate a demo but if I were to rate it I would give it a 9.0

The first level completly stunned me, it was a brand new concept and I was expecting much more of this pack just after that first pit. Sadly, the levels to come didn’t shock me that much. The second level was a standard train level, I have plenty of these. The 3rd level on the otherhand, that really shocked me. A floating rock, heh I felt like I was in a mario game. The 4th level was kind of blah nothing new here, same with the 5th level, but still, it was a great level pack.

Pros-
DIFFICULT.
Some original stuff.
All around great level design.

Cons-
It didn’t meet up to the bar that the first level set.
Lack of vertical play in some levels.

Hey BlurredD, I said I would download this and I did :), defiantly NOT disappointed.
I totally love all the special effects from the intro level onwards, the special effects are just wicked and really make the levels worth playing

The game play rules as well, its very hard even on easy but I’m gonna spend time on it and try and complete it without cheats! [no way could I do it without saving lol]

Things I like:
Its damm original
Cool special effects
Excellent game play
The train level :D
Its a good challenge to test your jazzy skills.

Things I don’t like:
Its not finished :)

If I was to rate this I would give it 9.5 as I just love this pack

I really hope you finish this as it just rules! I would recommend all to download and have a play.

These levels are censored hard. All of them were pretty good, but I kinda disliked the last one. I’m not a fan of space tilesets.

If I could rate this level (if it wasn’t a demo) it would easily get a rating well over 8.

C’mon people. This is what real platform-jumping games really should be! Dying when falling into a pit. These levels were really impressive. I didn’t find the first 3 levels nowadays so difficult that I even should have cheated in them, but I had to save plenty of times before some hard sections. These 4 levels were difficult but not impossible for me, except I had to cheat in the 4th level’s puzzle. I had no idea on how to solve that if trigger crate is behind two rocks from teh thingy..
Then the last level was a total mess.
There all you need is really good timing. Normal platform jumping was still just a normal challenge in the 5th level, but after the freezing sucker-tube, the challenge got really difficult. I had to get 15 coins from crates. The worst thing was that the coins turned into gems instantly if I didn’t break the crate correctly and didn’t get the coin in time. So, I didn’t continue from the coin-collecting section forwards anymore..I wonder what was at the end. I would actually been able to complete this level also, if the load-thingy wouldn’t run out of memory when saved after 3 times in this level. That sux.

I’m really waiting for full version and which wouldn’t have so hard levels as 5th level of this demo was. I’m not sure what I would give about this demo if I even would be able to rate, but I will think for the rating number of the full version as it comes. Doh, sure I will also play it before I rate, but if I may not cheat in any case.. :o

We’ll see…Good demo![This review has been edited by Superjazz]
