Inspired by Flash's post in the misc forum, but this one not like he said 'to get some funny comments' and stuff, but to try and make a change around here.
Basically I think there filter is too harsh, and most of the people in that post also agreed on that I think.

My vote is between option #1 and #2. but I chose 1 because #1 is too harsh but #2 makes a small difference in something not SO important and is sort of pointless.

This poll is a tad bit biased. You should have an option to make the filter more harsh if you have two for less harsh.
I think as swear words go, it is fine as it is. However, I personally think false positives like certain combinations of letters in the middle of a word should be fixed.

Traftonn you are right, what would you sudgest I was thinking about that too....but on the other hand I can't see how it could be more harsh lol.

If you are debating, curse words and such are only used to make up for your lack of debating talent. The only other time I can think of where someone would use curse words (besides insulting people, of course, but that is another thing entirely) is if you rant to let off your feelings. And isn't there LiveJournal for that?
Oh, and I guess you might post curse words if you post Rap lyrics. But I have a personal vendetta with rap, so that is perfectally fine in my eyes. Anyway, who really needs to post lyrics? Chances are, the people who would like the lyrics have already heard the song.

But I have a personal vendetta with rapSo do I.
I hate that I have to say 'turtle $hells' (at least on J2O) or 'level uses (-)'. Besides, nothing against filter.
Derby: Filter bypass removal. You cannot bypass the filter for exceptions.
Nitro
Jul 10, 2004, 05:32 AM
RSPS I dunno what ya mean really your thing about debating is right but a debate is just like an arguement but with a licky kind of name.
Cussing people you don't like is an important part of life, and letting off feelings as ya said it is even more important.
What is live journal?
Derby: Content removal. Using only a part of a filtered word is technically bypassing the filter.

1. Debating is more formal than arguing.
2. Do you really need to be able to cuss at people you find annoying everywhere you feel like? You won't die if there is a place you can't spew all the curses you know whenever you feel like it.
3. LiveJournal is this place where you can rant about your life and such and people might actually listen. I don't have an account nor do I want one.
4. Rap lyrics (or, at least, lyrics from the more popular type of rap) often have curse words in them.

1. Maybe in the place where you live. I don't see how using the word "formal" makes RSPSS FR sound nerdy. Can he help it that he has a large(r) vocabulary?
2. This is not an argument in favour of being able to swear on the JCF as personal attacks are forbidden anyway. You would have to drop that rule, too (which is a stupid thing to do).
3. Then why do you say "2. where else would i "complain" about the people who annoy me if not beside them and their peers?"? Isn't that kind of the same as spilling out your life to people you don't know?
4. Some people post rap lyrics. They are partly censored because of their use of strong words. Hence some people might want to not censor those words so they can post uncensored rap songs.
There's no use to taking away the filter here. You can swear all you want, it just gets replaced by something else. It still feels like you've sweared. What's the use of not doing it? There is none. This board, especially the jazz-related forums, gets lots of visits from young people, and lots of people object to having swearword-filled boards (what would happen here without the censor). So there's no reason to cease the censoring of swear words.

Oh, it could get stricter. Much stricter. Care to have "idiot" filtered? Some boards do it (I believe the default installation of EZBoard, does, but then again, it's EZBoard.)
"Turtle shell" was accidentally filtered on J2O because it contained the word "hell." Similarly, on J2O, we have ceased editing the name of a Jazz 2 tileset when used in that context, even if it is filtered here.

Jul 10, 2004, 11:56 AM
Oooooh, get it.
Well. The strictness could be reduced a little. I don't support swearing at all, but I once got a swearing for having an excerpt of The Offspring lyrics in my signature, containing the word "hell". It made the lyrics far more expressive than singing "what the heck is going on", doesn't it?

VelKa
Jul 10, 2004, 03:36 PM
I agree that some false positives need fixing, although the filter obviously isn't perfect. (I've seen some pretty odd ones occur.) Otherwise I don't have any problems with the filter. If I want/need to swear, I have my personal LiveJournal1 to use and abuse. Yes, I'm not exclusively a goody-goody person; I can (and do) curse much like the "cool" people we speak of. Seriously, I don't understand how people can constantly use the eff-word in debates and expect to sound dignified and intelligent. Call it "nerdy" if you desire - but as some people already mentioned, what's wrong with sounding intelligent? What's wrong with having strong enough skills (when it comes to debating) that you don't <i>need</i> to swear? Swearing is similar to personal attacks in debating; it only shows that you have a juvenile thinking process and cannot speak coherently in a mature fashion. Once in a while, we might slip and utter a swearword out of frustration. Right now, there's nothing wrong with the filter in my opinion. Since I don't post here that often anymore, I couldn't care less. If you must swear, http://www.livejournal.com/ is definitely the place to be. I think that LiveJournal is probably the best place to spam, swear <s>and complain about life</s>.
Whenever I get into an argument/debate with someone who always insists on swearing, I feel like laughing at them. Get a LiveJournal and swear in there. By keeping my essay-writing/preaching talents AND foul language restricted to a LiveJournal, I can avoid getting yelled at here for preaching or swearing, and I'm still being "cool"2. That should explain why I don't post here that often anymore.
Anyway, the only problem I have with the filter is when I post a story with false positives and they get filtered. It's a minor annoyance, but nothing terribly inconvenient.

Comments on your whole post...
Lack of debating talent? Ehh, no. It adds spice to conversation sometimes. Isn't LJ for that? Yes and no, yes you could use it. But anything basically goes apparently in Misc. Stuff. And some people do vent out their feelings in Misc. Stuff, I have seen topics like that in the past. Not that much nowadays though.
Nice stereotype of rap buddy. If you can say rap, you can very well say, just about almost all artists of Rock. And basically every single metal and death metal. Not every single rap singer, I still could name at least 5 bands/artists in rap that never used profanity in their discography.

Now we need to get Link into this now, geez. I can't say anything but....if he's not on the forum much and posts, how would he know anywyay? Pyro, summed up how I post basically.
HAHAHAHA, that was pretty funny :D. But Tublear doesn't seem like a spammer to me. His topics have purposes which you can reply to, and discuss, and find something out about each other. Or, you can just ignore them if you aren't interested, but that wouldn't necessarily make them spam. If he posted a ton of opinion topics and nobody replied to them (yet he still kept posting them) then he could be counted a spammer. But so far I see discussions, replies, and interest in his topics.
Also, just because someone posts a lot replies it doesn't make them a spammer. It means that they participate (so long as they stay on topic).
JJ Tublear doesn't need my defense either, I just wrote this because I think some people's opinion of spam is skewed.
And I won't vote or comment on the other people because I don't really know their posting habits.

I like people who can express their thoughts without using vulgarity.
It is sometimes annoying when you're trying to say something that contains a filtered word. One example is when trying to use Japanese, the suffix for past tense verbs uses the two Japanese letters shi and ta. Unfortunately those together get filtered out. Example: eiga o mima****a -- I watched a movie. Not that this is vitally important for most conversations here.

I believe Fquist is almost an adult (?). I am almost an adult, too. Therefore should we not adopt "adult"-like qualities before becoming legally adults? Exempli gratia, if I was a university-level English instructor and had to constantly read through papers full of curse words and other shoddy grammatical errors, I wouldn't consider the person/people who wrote the essays very mature, much less conscious of what was going on.

" You calling yourself a freak...you explained it to yaself Piccolo."
That's just a bad remark in many ways. It has nothing to do with the matter you're talking about, it's also a debating tactic that doesn't further conversation in any way - it's just an alternative way of saying "HAHA I'm right! you lose!" without replying to people's points. You say you're debating but rather you're just throwing around remarks that do not reply to what people say.
Debating, which you say it what you want, is, however low debates so often go, usually a bit more sophisticated than this. It requires actual discussion with two- or more-sided traffic of ideas, not the one-sided direction which is occuring here, where a lot people say to you is not read, or not replied to in a normal way, but replied to with some remark that doesn't reply to their points.
Regarding this whole anti-'maturity' thing:
You appear to have adopted some sort of weird stereotyping of youth, of the meaning of mature and immature, some idealisation of acting immaturely where people who want to (try - not everyone has english has a first language - and) write proper english and listen to others and who value good discussion are somehow out of touch with 'normality' (not normal), not the people having adopted half-understandable english because they have this weird notion that it's the 'cool' way.
'Mature' is not an insult on this board, Michael. The idealisation of anti-intellectualism and anti-maturity that's been going the rounds in some places has not perpetrated this forum yet so remarks about people writing well being dumb/nerdy/stupid/whatever are pretty much humoured here.
PS, if Tublear wanted to suck up to mods he wouldn't propose (as a half-serious joke) banning them, or tell them he doesn't like them, and also criticize them on many other occasions (which is his good right to do).
