Language filter
Inspired by Flash's post in the misc forum, but this one not like he said 'to get some funny comments' and stuff, but to try and make a change around here.
Basically I think there filter is too harsh, and most of the people in that post also agreed on that I think. |

As long as I can safely say "Turtle shell" I'm happy.

Cuss words are not really needed for intelligent conversation.

This poll is a tad bit biased. You should have an option to make the filter more harsh if you have two for less harsh.
I think as swear words go, it is fine as it is. However, I personally think false positives like certain combinations of letters in the middle of a word should be fixed.

Traftonn you are right, what would you sudgest I was thinking about that too....but on the other hand I can't see how it could be more harsh lol.
RSPS, do I look like an inteLijant person who will converse with you? ((: alot of people would like it to be less harsh. |

If you are debating, curse words and such are only used to make up for your lack of debating talent. The only other time I can think of where someone would use curse words (besides insulting people, of course, but that is another thing entirely) is if you rant to let off your feelings. And isn't there LiveJournal for that?
Oh, and I guess you might post curse words if you post Rap lyrics. But I have a personal vendetta with rap, so that is perfectally fine in my eyes. Anyway, who really needs to post lyrics? Chances are, the people who would like the lyrics have already heard the song.

RSPS I dunno what ya mean really your thing about debating is right but a debate is just like an arguement but with a licky kind of name.
Cussing people you don't like is an important part of life, and letting off feelings as ya said it is even more important. What is live journal? Derby: Content removal. Using only a part of a filtered word is technically bypassing the filter. Last edited by Derby; Jul 10, 2004 at 09:52 AM. |

1. Debating is more formal than arguing.
2. Do you really need to be able to cuss at people you find annoying everywhere you feel like? You won't die if there is a place you can't spew all the curses you know whenever you feel like it. 3. LiveJournal is this place where you can rant about your life and such and people might actually listen. I don't have an account nor do I want one. 4. Rap lyrics (or, at least, lyrics from the more popular type of rap) often have curse words in them.

1. You got to stop sounding mature cos in anyone cool's opinion you sound nerdy.
2. where else would i "complain" about the people who annoy me if not beside them and their peers? 3. live journal sounds weird, I wouldn't spill my life out to people I don't know 4. you still lost me......what the heck is rap got to do with this? |

2. This is not an argument in favour of being able to swear on the JCF as personal attacks are forbidden anyway. You would have to drop that rule, too (which is a stupid thing to do). 3. Then why do you say "2. where else would i "complain" about the people who annoy me if not beside them and their peers?"? Isn't that kind of the same as spilling out your life to people you don't know? 4. Some people post rap lyrics. They are partly censored because of their use of strong words. Hence some people might want to not censor those words so they can post uncensored rap songs. There's no use to taking away the filter here. You can swear all you want, it just gets replaced by something else. It still feels like you've sweared. What's the use of not doing it? There is none. This board, especially the jazz-related forums, gets lots of visits from young people, and lots of people object to having swearword-filled boards (what would happen here without the censor). So there's no reason to cease the censoring of swear words.

Oh, it could get stricter. Much stricter. Care to have "idiot" filtered? Some boards do it (I believe the default installation of EZBoard, does, but then again, it's EZBoard.)
"Turtle shell" was accidentally filtered on J2O because it contained the word "hell." Similarly, on J2O, we have ceased editing the name of a Jazz 2 tileset when used in that context, even if it is filtered here.

Oooooh, get it.
Well. The strictness could be reduced a little. I don't support swearing at all, but I once got a swearing for having an excerpt of The Offspring lyrics in my signature, containing the word "hell". It made the lyrics far more expressive than singing "what the heck is going on", doesn't it?

It is my opinion it should remain as it is. However, words in the middle of a word should be fixed. Example: The Chronicles of Rid****. Nothing wrong with the movie, but the name is censored. That kind of thing needs fixing.
|
Jul 10, 2004, 03:36 PM | |
This is not an exit.
I agree that some false positives need fixing, although the filter obviously isn't perfect. (I've seen some pretty odd ones occur.) Otherwise I don't have any problems with the filter. If I want/need to swear, I have my personal LiveJournal1 to use and abuse. Yes, I'm not exclusively a goody-goody person; I can (and do) curse much like the "cool" people we speak of. Seriously, I don't understand how people can constantly use the eff-word in debates and expect to sound dignified and intelligent. Call it "nerdy" if you desire - but as some people already mentioned, what's wrong with sounding intelligent? What's wrong with having strong enough skills (when it comes to debating) that you don't need to swear? Swearing is similar to personal attacks in debating; it only shows that you have a juvenile thinking process and cannot speak coherently in a mature fashion. Once in a while, we might slip and utter a swearword out of frustration. Right now, there's nothing wrong with the filter in my opinion. Since I don't post here that often anymore, I couldn't care less. If you must swear, http://www.livejournal.com/ is definitely the place to be. I think that LiveJournal is probably the best place to spam, swear
Whenever I get into an argument/debate with someone who always insists on swearing, I feel like laughing at them. Get a LiveJournal and swear in there. By keeping my essay-writing/preaching talents AND foul language restricted to a LiveJournal, I can avoid getting yelled at here for preaching or swearing, and I'm still being "cool"2. That should explain why I don't post here that often anymore. Anyway, the only problem I have with the filter is when I post a story with false positives and they get filtered. It's a minor annoyance, but nothing terribly inconvenient. --- Resources: 1. http://www.livejournal.com/ - A great place to complain. 2. This post has been brought to you by someone who has taken the time and effort to swear elsewhere. Last edited by VelKa; Jul 10, 2004 at 04:39 PM. |

Make the filter less harsh,
Some/most people are way too immature on this board, to do away with the filter. But the obvious and known fact of the matter is, the filter is too rediculous.

Lack of debating talent? Ehh, no. It adds spice to conversation sometimes. Isn't LJ for that? Yes and no, yes you could use it. But anything basically goes apparently in Misc. Stuff. And some people do vent out their feelings in Misc. Stuff, I have seen topics like that in the past. Not that much nowadays though. Nice stereotype of rap buddy. If you can say rap, you can very well say, just about almost all artists of Rock. And basically every single metal and death metal. Not every single rap singer, I still could name at least 5 bands/artists in rap that never used profanity in their discography.

I like people who can express their thoughts without using vulgarity.
It is sometimes annoying when you're trying to say something that contains a filtered word. One example is when trying to use Japanese, the suffix for past tense verbs uses the two Japanese letters shi and ta. Unfortunately those together get filtered out. Example: eiga o mima****a -- I watched a movie. Not that this is vitally important for most conversations here.

Blackraptor is right but I can't help arguing and I enjoy it (((: so i'll just go on folks:
Quist:1. He sounds like a bloody nerd... he sounds like he's trying to be mature that's what nerds sound like. We're the youth not some adult wannabies. 2. that is true but let's say we are 'debating' about if salt is good with tomatoes then I want to be able to say that it tastes like and then but in some word that will get censored. 3. that thaught crossed my mind when posting, and no, it's not the same cos they know me and the other dude and whatever is between us. 4. i understood that but that got very little to do with this post still lol. But about the last bit you said in your post, that's wrong because in some post of mine I go "What the (curse word)?!" and it is replaced as "What the (four stars)?!" and Derby comes along editing it into "What?!" now I feel there like he is some egocentral person on some quest to mak the JCF his ideal eden. I call that farty. |
Jul 11, 2004, 08:15 AM | |
I believe Fquist is almost an adult (?). I am almost an adult, too. Therefore should we not adopt "adult"-like qualities before becoming legally adults? Exempli gratia, if I was a university-level English instructor and had to constantly read through papers full of curse words and other shoddy grammatical errors, I wouldn't consider the person/people who wrote the essays very mature, much less conscious of what was going on.

Have you thought of it that it might be his normal way of typing/speaking? Believe it or not but before this modern wired age people, including youths, didn't write in sms/e-mail language. I generally try to write good english with good punctuation on forums and it's not like I'm a nerd..uh..or actually I am, but it's just my writing style.

I am a nerd! I use proper punctuation, capitals and usually everybody can understand what I say!
You have to agree, that sound stupid. If someone can spell well and writes sentences as they should be that doesn't mean you're a nerd. And actually, I couldn't understand most of your posts, because they were full of **** (that's not a filtered out word) and there were lots of capitals and full stops missing. |
Jul 12, 2004, 07:02 AM | |
Megumi you're doing it too now hehe [:
Radium, thats exactly my point he sounds so weak like that man. Quist, it's the nerd style you said it yourself in your last line even if as a joke. True, Flash, but you can tell the diff by those small things that you can't really put into words, or I might just be banned if i put them in words i don't know. Oh and who cares about the grammar? the english teacher does, I can go eat her if i want good grades but what is the point of that here?! |
Jul 12, 2004, 07:30 AM | |
I care about grammar. Compare this:
I wants to making good levels with helps for many plays I want to make good levels and I need help from other players Alright, that's somewhat exaggerated, but I hope you get my point. If it was Dutch I would probably understand, but English is not my first language so correct Grammar is somewhat required to make a post easy to read. |
Jul 12, 2004, 07:31 AM | |
I don't see the point of misspelling things on purpose, unless I want to mock someone.
