You can't host Internet games via LAN.

Please supply more information. You contradict yourself by first saying "direct internet connection", and then in another post you say LAN.
Either way, if you have a firewall, you need to open\forward the ports. If your modem is connected directly to your computer and you have a firewall such as ZoneAlarm or Windows XP's builtin firewall, open the correct ports for JJ2 or allow access for Jazz2.exe. If you are on a LAN, change your router\gateway settings so that it either forwards JJ2 ports to a certain computer or "triggers" forwarding.

Usually "LAN" refers to "Local Area Network". You only have a LAN if you have a Local Area Network (meaning your own private network outside of your Internet connection, and your IP adresses of each computer are the reserved private IP addresses (usually 192.168.x.x).
If you have a LAN, JJ2 will not be able to host and will time out when playing on other servers. This problem can only be solved by having your gateway\router forward all incoming connections on certain ports to a certain computer, and vice-versa.
