View Full Version : Pretty soon...

Pretty soon, the JJ2 community should get a lot bigger because... well, Jazz 2 can't NOT be abandonware forever, right? It's not sold, but it's still illegal to distribute freely. When it is abandonware, though, we'll get a bigger community, so that's cool, right? That'll draw more attention to Jazz 2, and I hope CliffyB and Epic will notice...

I hope it will never become abandoneware cuz that (free game) might attract "evil" players. :(

Ehe, it's not abandonware in the first place.

Ur right, it isn't. But LAb RaT kiD was talking about BECOMING abandonware.

I doubt that Jazz2 will become abandonware anytime soon. Jazz1 isn't even abandonware (even though people often think it is).
If we had the Jazz2 source code I think we would have a larger following. That is all that I am waiting for.
And CliffyB remembers Jazz whether Epic does or not. Note his visits to the JCF, the one time he got in #jj2, and his hints that he and Noogy were cooperating, as well as his mention of Jazz on G4 TV.

We have enough evil players already. Take a look at GenEX and Crazy Woman. <s>And, on some occasions, the majority of the DM/GpW clans.</s> *whap*

Companies simply won't make abandonware out of most games ever, especially if the liscence could be used well.

Haha...frighteningly enough that would almost work, except for Jazz's edginess.

Yay for possible personal attacks!
I'd just like to take this moment to point out that Abandonware is Illegal.

Jazz Jackrabbit cereal... hmm... they make cereal out of everything, so I'll say it's got a fair chance... okay, maybe not, but who knows?

Generally, that is true. There are a few cases, perhaps, of abandonware, but not any major ones. I'm sure someone has the copyright to Pong still, for instance, but I doubt they hold it very dearly.

ZZT is legal abandonware because Epic made it freeware. Stupid Epic Classics making people pay for it.

Yeah, and all those nintendo ROMs out there are illegal, too, and not just after 24 hours. ROMs are illegal 24/7. The 24 hour rule is just a myth.
BTW, Epic Classics charges like, 30 bucks or more for One Must Fall 2097... But that one is freeware now, as well. Argh! There be mutiny afoot!
Hmm, Grand Theft Auto is freeware too, aparently.
OMF 2097 and Grand Theft Auto can be found at www.gamehippo.com as well as many other freeware titles.
Administrators: Don't panic, Gamehippo doesn't provide ROMs or warez.

Darker, I think that's going to be edited.
But anyway, if it's freeware, it's not abadonware. So actually. Abadonware doesn't exist, in a legal way.

Freeware is free. Abandonware is not neccessarily freeware.

I thought abandonware was when a company offically gave up their rights to it, or at least, didn't have it renewed.
For example, the people that made "It's a Wonderful Life" did not renew the copyright, and now anybody can play it whenever they want. That's why you see it on so much around Christmas, no copyrights to pay.

Copyrights last for a very long time. Very long.

Btw, I doubt if Jazz is copyrighted, I however know Jazz Jackrabbit is a trademark.

Well, like I said, the copyright lack of renewal happened with "It's a wonderful life" I guess it's pretty old though. Jazz Jackrabbit is only about ten years old.

I won't do a repackaging of what Newspaz already said like you did with what Trafton said. Instead, I'll simply agree with Newspaz. "Abandonware just isn't freeware. Otherwise it would be named freeware."

Home of the underdogs should be sued. Anyway, ehm. They can not decide wether a title is freeware or not.

If it were freeware, then it'd be for download on an offical Epic Megagames website.

That's not necessarily true. I mean.. We all know <i>JJ1/2 isn't freeware</i>, but having it on the official site isn't a requirement of freeware. e.g. OMF2097 wasn't on omf.com for a long while after being declared freeware..(It is now, IIRC) Other sites had to distribute it (and did since it was legal).

Hmm, no matter what people say JJ2 is now abandonwarez. But it's a kinda wrong statement, because people still play it. Since this game is no longer sold in stores, the only other way to obtain it is from the internet. Who cares, about the copyright laws anymore, this game is 5 years old. And it's pretty clear that only anything involving the game Unreal is the only thing on their mind.

Have you not been paying attention?
Besides, theoretically there isn't really any such thing as abandonware. There's never a game that has been completely and utterly abandoned; if it did, no one would want to play it. That's the point of abandonment.

He is JJ Tubulear. Both arrogance and ignorance are his fortés.
Another way to put it... hmm... Ok, it's like telling your dog to stop peeing on your leg; no matter how much you tell him to stop, he won't understand.
