Ugh....writing code for waves is (-)(-)(-)(-) hard...my brain aches....its less the waves and more calculating normals of vertices when they are constantly changing...
Sorry if that went ove your head i just needed to vent !...im going to see if anyone else has had more success than me with this !

Site updated. The front page may look strange for a bit while I try to get the CSS to all work properly.

Baggers: If you're just going for an accurate conversion, there aren't any waves, there's only a single surface which rises up and down.

Nice work baggers, looks like the foundation for a fine engine...ran at 161 FPS max
at 1024x768 and 32 bit color on my Athlon XP 2600+ machine with an 128MB GeForce FX 5200 video card and 768MB of RAM.

Thanks Jonny! that does make life much simpler, now i only have to deal with a way so that the credits stay intact...thats the one bit i'd rather people didnt fiddle with !

Also the demo have been updated...as some people on the darkbasic forums couldnt get the demo to run due to resolution issues. I fixed this but I didnt remove the new sounds i had added and the start of the 'Seeker' code (no explosions yet though)...for those who have already seen the demo its not much new...however it is a little slower than the last one as I think the sounds do slow the game abit...I sped up the bouncers code a little but not the blaster's code yet, so that still murders the framerate !

I got the wave code working, just getting the object to cast shadows properly was hell, so i might just leave it at that for now...ill show a little video soon, its not much, but the code was evil !

Hmm... same error as last time. It requests either 16 or 32 bit color, and when I set it to 16 bit, it claims that the hardware does not support the color mode.

I have a suggestion, just make a word file (or another office programm) and list all the people that have helped so far (that means important help, such as modeling, or something, I guess you won't have to mention me for "helping you get the credits right" :P).

Every time someone does something important who is not in the list, include him.

I have been making a list for a little while now, just like you said 'LittleFreak', and its a respectable size for such a small project.
@ Unknown Rabbit: I have found two other people with the same error as you, so i am going to get one of them to compile the code on their machine and send me the exe, so youll have a copy soon !...its just being more awkward that expected.

Hi again, just another couple of questions for you guys.

Im currently designing the level for the first proper demo and its going to be a mix of a good few styles from the first game (i.e. You start in the training zone in the castle and the leave to the dimondous forever style bit and then into a weirder science style part) and its looking pretty cool, but i was just wondering about your preference on objects.

I myself played the OEM more recently that the original and i actualy prefer the Diamonds from the OEM version to the ones from the actual game...I was wondering your preference on certain things.

OEM Diamonds -v- Original Diamonds
Do you want to see points fly away like the original or not ?
Do you want to be able to collect carrots even if you dont need them ?
Do you want tubes you get sucked down to be transparent or not ? (its really easy to do either !)
Any other preferences you can think of ?

Oh and heres a very eary WIP of the Castle bit of the level, ive been on it for about 20 mins so far...ahh this demo is going to be cool !

By the way, Baggers, it seems that you want misplaced Carrottus and Diamondus in gameplay order. ;)

On the contrary, I think it would look alright (as long as the numbers weren't blocky sprites and they always faced the camera)

As far as carrots go, it's hard to say. It's annoying to be able to get a carrot when you might need it later, but if you're playing for points you end up having to get hurt if you want to get the carrot. Granted, nobody seems to play for points, so I'll have to side with not being able to get them.

As far as carrots go, it's hard to say. @all: thanks for the responce people, its a great help!...Oh and i can do the points in the original font and colour and also i can do it in true 3d (the points fly away from the actual point in 3D space or they can be done in 2D just like the original)

...yes. It's called JCS.

I like the regular gems better because they look more mystical and less like rocks. OEM Diamondus is fine, though.

The tilesets aren't needed, are they?How can he rip tiles from tilesets if there are no tilesets? JCS CAN'T OPEN .LEV FILES BECAUSE THEY WERE MADE WITH MLLE PLZTHX

The shots are, well... ugly. Walls don't tile with themselves, and they're dull and immensely resized imo.

I'm still puzzled by why The Castle leads to Diamondus and not Carrotus.
I personally like the shots but the walls do need to be resized to something a tad smaller.(edit- on the inside, because they seem to look good on the outside picture)
(and what's with the outside of the castle in the balcony pic? Is Spaz having an acid trip?)

Oh the fact that it leads to diamondus is that in this demo im only showing a few different areas, its not the actual flow of the game its just a demo.
The outside balcony bit has a crazy window/field thing around it, I felt like having a good view and needed a way so the player had to go down the tube and not just jump off the castle..it is a bit trippy though !
Ill resize the inside walls then !...the hard part is getting different black in as What would be great would be to have one huge texture for the whole inside so i can add as much variation and detail as i like...however this is impractical memory wise (and also i was in a hurry to get the model done).
As I said before Im not a modeler, so any help is most welcome!
@br>piet: i case you dont look on the previous page, I would love your help...can you save your levels in any other format ?

Basically, you're using the walls all wrong. A JJ2 level with the walls all one tile would look ugly. That's why there's so much variation available. And the tops of platforms should be smooth, like in the tileset. And they should actually line up with other platforms, so they look like they're blocks instead of smooth painted surfaces.

I have DBPro, but I got it a fairly long time ago and it's probably an outdated version by now. I haven't done much with it either.

I've been skimming over this topic, and I must say, the idea of the Castle leading to Diamondus seems like a good idea to me. In the final version though, for accuracy story, Diamondus'll need to be reached by Devan's time machine, and that area could become Carrotus, etc. Like a free roam type area, where bosses need to be beaten to reach the next area, and certain devices would allow you travel to certain areas. In short, something like a free range area sounds like what I mean, and I think it'd do some good...

Anyway Baggers, if you care, you could PM or IM me, since I'm relatively good with plot and stories, etc.

Hey folks, just to say sorry i havnt posted for a while...i have been visiting here but ive been rather busy...however jazz has not stopped, ive managed to get hold of a decent level designer who is going to have a go at the demo level for me...here is a little example of his work in modeling (no levels here just models...but he is a big jazz fan)

Dont worry i will !...also they have another attack where they leap and go inside their shells and try and slide into you...it makes them a little harder but they are vunerable if you move in time.

Also as far as controls im allowing the player to target enemies...this way we can keep the more traditional controls rather than using the mouse...i havnt implemented this yet so if it doesnt feel right ill come up with something else!

Progress Report: Bat AI is done...and it was nice and short !

To all: I dont know about you but ive always felt the old game was a bit too easy, so im currently trying to come up with new enemy ideas...id love your input on this and any sketches you want to add in would be appretiated...
However the constriction is the style, you guys all know the feel of the game so try to keep to it please.
My current little ideas have been spiders (which stay on the ceiling and try and drop on to you) for the castle, and a goon with a carrot-firing mortar!

I had an idea for the turtle... When you're far away, it hides in its shell, and moves twords you when you get close.

Just a thought... But with that, who knows, you can make turtles with rocks for shells and make it harder...

Actually, in JJ3 the turtles were invincible in their shells.
Also to point out- In JJ2, when the turtles changed directions and went in their shells, while in the shell you could shoot while standing up and they would be able to 'duck' over the bullet.
Edit- Enemy ideas?
Lizards that attack by break dancing
Bats that turn into Turtle Vamires
The Skeleton can dissamble itself to get away
Copter Lizards that can pick up enemies and toss them at you
Enemies that use each other as sheilds
Witch can turn other enemies into Mutated Turtle Frogs
-I'm just typing what comes off the top of my head for the enemy ideas)

@Noob: Copter Lizards that can pick up enemies and toss them at you - This I really like !
Enemies that use each other as sheilds- probably a bit too hard to code well.

Perhaps a special skeleton that can pick up the bones that fall off when you shoot it and put itself back togeather. Thus, you would need to keep it moving so it is unable to get at it's fallen bones.

Anyway back on track...I am currently working on the turtle AI...just spent the last 20mins hunting down a bug in the waypoint system but thats fixed now, so patrols are live !
This allows for up to 8 different locations for a creature to patrol.

I thought you said you weren't good at modeling... That looks great! I wanna see it textured...

But, if you can do the turtle that nicely, I'd think that the bat'll look nice too.

If it helps you, though I'm sure you know this already, the bat has 2 stances... hanging from event pos, and flying. If you want to make it accurate, the bat starts hanging from it's position, until the character comes within a range of 3 tiles (or whatever unit of measurement you will use), then starts flying. If you leave its range, it'll return to the start position, still flying.

@Sonyk: Thanks...yeah mine works like that except ive allowed the bat to go back to sleep at its original position if i am out of range...just as i felt it a bit messy to have him flying about still!...but if people would rather i left him flying then thats no problem either.

@All: Just seen the first concept shots from our level designer and my smile is HUGE...this guy is great and by the looks of things we will have some great things to show within a month !

I just wanted to run this idea by you guys before myself and 'Pudbawl' (the level designer) start work, would you rather we started on the actual game levels or the demo ones... i can still release a demo it just wont be a complete game....The advantage of not having the seperate demo means we can start on the actual game now and that means more content !

If you are ok with this please say and also which levels you would like to see in what order, i currently have the first sketches for the first castle and diamondus levels

I hope your ok with this move.

Well, the Jazz2 shareware was a bunch of new levels... Either way, that sounds good, especially with the J3DCS (or whatever you'll call it), so we can get started too.

Cool, thought you might like a pic of some old friends...two carrot type scenery pieces, im trying to learn some modeling at the moment so this is my first real attempt at them, and critic is welcome !...Ive just upgraded DarkbasicPro, and so ive been gettin the game working again, however the good thing is that the file size of the exe's is megs less so demos should be smaller filesize from now on.

Why is that less-high carrot orange instead of purple as on the screenshot?

For the rest, it looks nice.

The beet looks a bit wrong, the green part should be more in front.

I was more for making the demo first, so people can play it and tell you what they like and don't like.

Oh therell be beta editions, its just we would like to get right into the level design. The thing is I finally have a commited modeler by the looks of it and hes doing some great stuff so to get the most we can from it we are developing the actual game.

Yep, but its a while yet...sorry this drags out , theres just so much to code !
And model...which is why im trying to get my hands dirty on that too !

Oh good news though, the new update for DBpro allows for very accurate and fast shadow generation so hopefully i can get that incorperated on jazz....and it will look great with the model. Hare is still working on it so I hear, and im so looking foreward to the result !

Hey people, ive been experimenting with shadows and the results are looking very nice.
However till saturday i will unfortunatly not be gracing these forums as I am hikinh 100km to raise money for my Gap year. So that means no updates from me !
however at request from a member of this forum i thought id post up a WIP video of a level, its in very early Beta remember and so does not have trees and such yet, buts its only a rought 3d sketch. Hope you like !

The wing come out curved in the actual game as the black become transparent, and ill have a look at shrinking those eyes.

For those interested here the untexture turtle sliding along his patrol points, Upto 8 points can be set, in this instance i have only used 4, you can see the dragonfly again in the background !

Just a few extra bits before i leave jazz for the night, first a pic showing the high quality shadows being incorperated into the game, they will be used sparingly to conserve speed however jazz is definately getting one, this will help alot when it comes to judging jump distances and landings.

Well a beta is finally on the way folks, i'm trying to get all the different bits ive done so far in one demo so im trying to knock up a level while they other guy is making the real levels, so yep it will look a bit crappy but its still about time you got to play the game so far !

This is the first screeny showing the fire effects and a bridge to another island, you have to ride a flying fruit to get there. Oh the orange thing is a carrot.
Im getting back to getting some small details into the game and hopefully some more weaponry !

Little Update:
Weapon 8 (OEM version) is done its decribed as "Pepper spray is now mini fireballs. They are extremely powerful, and go through enemies, make cool sounds... they're great. "

Weapon 6 (Flame thrower !) is done too !...and is very cool, the flames rest on objects just like the original. I'll put up a video soon.

Oh jazz's face animation (for the HUD) is done but is a bit crappy a the mo so if anyone knows where a decent quality version is then id be most grateful.

Targeting system working fully. Not sure whether to allow targeting of the flamethrower yet, obviously i havnt for the homing missiles.
Im going to look into a free target system, where you stand still and can aim by hand.

Ok folks here is the video where i get to show that even though my modeling is a little crappy, my game is coming along well!...this video shows how far ive come from the first blaster firing...to the point where i can show off 5 weapons !
The file size is 7meg due to the fact this video has sound, which really adds to the impact in my mind!

Thanks, ive just been playing it, and fighting of a large cloud of very agressive Dragonflys !...they are fully working now, appart from sounds, im just going to play the original to rip the sound and look for any other tips on improving the movement.

Hey people im back !
This video comes in two flavors 'with sound' and 'without sound' just for those on slower connections.

The video shows me fighting 15 dragonflys in game with a variety of weapons, I havnt allowed them to hurt me yet as I needed a video where I actualy got a chance to kill them !
I feel targeting makes things a little too easy at the mo but then again i think when i get killed a few times i'll change my view !

Problems:
* No sky yet
* The dragonflys occasionaly go a little through the floor (easy fix)
* Targeting not fluid enough.

Ok rant over, now to the models, my criticism is that they dont look like the sprites from i game, thats all im looking for, acurate copies !...check out my turtle on a past page...i modeled it directly from the original sprites....if you check my first ever post i am going for the STYLE so i need the models to be fairly acurate....i hope im being explicit enough here.
But thankyou so much for your enthusiasm, it really does help...however its time to start your own thread !

Couldn't you include mouse control as an optional option (8D)? I prefer mouse control for player movement above keyboard control, especially in 3D games.

Ok here is a WIP of the Spaz model im working on, Still very WIP, i have to thank jonny for the human model it mad the basis for this attempt....any major flaws so far ?
My major priorities are to fix the jaw so it flows into the tufts of fur well..and to fix the seams between the fur and the face.

Milkshape can so pretty much anything a basic modeler needs, and covers more model formats than most other modelers...and its pretty cheap !

Ok I got the poly count down to 995 and fixed a few little graphical bugs...Ive now got to add a few more polys so animating will be neater and then texture him...before finally animating...wow this is a very different world to me !

p.s. The arm was fixed, the polys filled in on the tufts of fur, the body was shrunk a little as he looked very slightly to 'adult' in my earlier post.

Fur is difficult due to the face that it increases the polycount hugely, im going to se if i can do without modeling to much more fur and just texure it on.

What im worried about at the mo is the back of jazz, especially the head, im just not sure its quite right, what do you think ?

I could but every poly is a risk of slowing down the game...tell you what...I may make a high poly version after this, just a few aditions you could set in the options menu.

By the way, are any of you out there good with art packages?...and if so could you have a bash at making Spaz's fur?

Whatever happened to Noogy and his site anyway? Oh and emailing Epic telling them that you've used their IP will get you a cease and desist warning or something of the like. Not really a good idea.

Ok so this is the first little demo to wet your appetite.
The camera is at a fixed distance from jazz who slowly turns left constantly throughout the demo. (the next one will have full control)
You cant move the camera but you can shoot both the blaster and the Blue bouncers
(use 1 to select blaster, 2 for the bouncers)
You can jump, space is regular jump, down and space is super jump and pressing space once jazz has reached jump jump height starts the 'copter ears'...which is rather dull in this demo as it just means he falls slower as he doesnt have a body yet let alone ears !
Also there s only some background music for company...but hey its a start.

Oh also its control key to shoot.

The file is 8.61 meg, and is a zip file, so just unzip it and run the file called "JazzSystemTest.exe"...or something similar...its the only '.exe' in the zip so you cant miss it.

The Frames per second is writen in the corner, press '+' to set the frame rate to unlimited to see how fast your computer can run the demo.

Its generaly intended as a test to see what speed it ran on your machine.
Its pretty out of date now and you cant run around...only jump, shoot, pick either of two weapons, watch the effects !

Well, I finally caught up on stuff.
..okay, I didn't really READ all the posts, just looked at pictures, watched videos, added n00b to my MSN list, etc.
But DANG.
This project just keeps rocking more and more!
I swear, I may not know any modelling or anything, but if you ever need an artist for anything here, just tell me, I was going to practice the JJ2 style anyway!
