You are foo??

(no onffense, just question)

Okay, first of all, his boots came out very suck. I would've redone them, but my eraser was very crappy and it would've smudged everything. Same with the thing to the right of his boots. That was originally intended to be a potion, but it came out very suck, so I just kind of randomly shaded it for no reason at all. Also blame the eraser. Also, his staff is crooked. I know that. It's probably a result of having the paper I drew this on folded up in my pocket from the time study hall ended till now. That also explains the fold marks. His nose is too high up, I know that too. And I'll make an excuse for one ear being black and say that it's a shadow. The blocks he's standing on are supposed to represent the blocks in Hocus Pocus. I'm obsessed with drawing isometrics, so that's why they're all 3D like that. The stars, moons, lightning bolts, etc. would've been shaded in more nicely if the bell didn't ring while I was making them.

I'm not all that happy with my final results here, but it's not bad, I guess. Compared to people I know in IRL, that is.

Oh, yeah! One more thing. One eye is bigger than the other. My excuse there is that his eyes were modeled after my Uncle Robert.

This drawing took about 25 minutes in total to make (that's all the time I had, really); thus it was kind of rushed.

He seems to be missing the hood like thing that goes behind his head. Also, most people don't stand like that for any period of time. I do like the idea that Fooruman carries around a cane.
He looks black.

That picture is really horrible. It does remind me of myself when I started drawing, back then. I'll give you a few hints.

Get used to draw bigger, Lab. Small images are hard to detail and work through. They're specially hard to mess around with because your eraser will most likely remove half of the character and they look bad when you size them up, like you did with that image. Second, you might work more through with your shading. Shading is really hard with a normal school pencil (which you probably used), but try pulling your strength when colouring dark areas, and be gentle in areas you want to light up. You can use your eraser to light up your shading, too.

Here's an example of an image I made recently. It's drawn on and fills an a4 paper.

Copy and paste the url into your adress bar for view full image size

Not that I should brag, but I thought it might give you an idea. =P

I must confess that's one of the uglier Sonic pictures I've seen lately. However, that's not what the thread's about.

The drawing size is completely dependant on the pencil and eraser size. A well sharpened pencil and sharpened typewriter eraser could probably draw successfully on the face of a coin. A boulder of graphite and rubber tire might need the wall of a building.

I disagree here completely. All pencils are about the same. Personally, I prefer regular mechanical ones because it breaks the endless "draw, draw, sharpen" loop.

Anyway, the Fooruman picture... Moonblaze is right; work on the shading. Sloppy shading isn't as much of a problem as not having a light source, or direction that the light rays come from. Also, make his hands bigger. The general rule with hands is that they should be able to cover the face when open (the secret rule is that drawing the hands too big is hardly noticable). Don't forget the facial proportions, either. The eyes go halfway down the head, the nose goes halfway between the eyes and chin, and the mouth goes halfway between the chin and nose. Oh, and check that perspective on the block at the bottom - it gets bigger as it goes away.

Please care to explain why it is ugly to you. I'm curious, everyone else said it was cool.

I know I didn't say it was ugly but I think its an ok pic you've got talent but there's something that doesn't quite look right about it. Still when ever I try to draw someone elses creation it looks crap so I guess I can't talk. Well I can actually but what the hell am I going on about now? Um yeah the pics ok but there's something about it. Yeah that was it.

Que Passa!!!!

I think it's just the little things like the shape of Sonics torso, his left arm, and his feet that kind of look slightly wierd.

But them I'm not that good a critic.

The ears go off at different angles.
His left arm obscures the single non-head spike you chose to draw, making it look like all his spikes are on his head.
Gloves are affected by gravity - typically, they will rest on your arm, not float around it.
The middle finger of his left hand goes off to the side at an almost 90 degree angle. I tried to do that. I failed miserably. It must be painful.
The top curved edges of his brown front do not look like they are the same. The one on the left seems to come out of his leg or something instead of looking realistic.
Exactly what is he doing? I'm no gymnast, but I can see no reason to actually hold your left leg like that in normal movement, especially when the foot seems to be over the other foot.
...and, you know, CAN you hold your left leg like that? It seems to be coming up out of his body. Most legs start off going down.
I honestly can not figure out the perspective on his right arm/hand or which way it's going.

Actually, I'll give you all the others, but I've been reading the comics, and I think that his wrists DO fall in the absolute center.

Logical- no. Realistic- no. True to the actual art the Sonic artists do- I think so.

Maybe he starches them.

Well, ok. I'll admit I wasn't too sure about that one.
(Maybe his gloves have lots of black fur inside so there's not as much room as it looks like there is?)

Gravity in Sonicland = Chaos. Otherwise, thanks a lot for the rest of it, Unknown. That really helped me a lot getting the idea.

Hey. Lay off, that's a cool pic mind you. I doubt you could try to do better yourself.

Are you saying that Sonic has hairy wrists?
/\/\

(Might explain why he's always wearing those gloves even in hot places like deserts.)

No, I probably wouldn't, as I work more with sprites than with big drawings. However, half the point of this forum is getting suggestions for how to improve your work, even if it is in a somewhat hijacked thread.

Batty: I was actually speaking of the fur stuff being attached to the gloves, not the arms, but whatever floats your boat.

Whew... Thats a load off my mind. So your saying that the gloves insides looks kind of like the sweeping part of a vacume cleaner...

And UR's right. If you put stuff here, someones bound to comment on how it can look better. Otherwise, why show it at all?
Nobody likes a poumpus bragger who cant take critisism.
