It's a bit late, but you have to put the .j2l and .j2t, while music files (XM, S3M, MOD, whatever...) should be in the Music folder.
If JJ2 still crashes post the last 5 or so lines of LogFile.Txt here and I might be able to tell you what's wrong. BTW, the Mac version can open custom levels perfectly fine, EvilMonkey.

Oh my! The easiest problem to solve ;D.
I was once a victim of this atrocity. My computer hadnt crashed for ages, and in retrospect, i gained lots of levels. The thing is, JJ2 dosent like it if people have OVER 256 levels (or a number similar to that). JJ2 wont run. The solution is, to either delete files (LEVELS ONLY) that you dont like, or wouldnt use, or you cant get into because its passworded. Repeat as many times as needed. Lather. Rinse. Repeat. Hope this helped ^^ Edit: READ THIS TOO! Leave in your music and tileset files (unless you hate them) because they dont take up slots in the homecooked levels menu.

Correction: with the downloaded levels (that I didn't put in "Data" yet), I have 503 levels *cough*

DID ANYONE PAY ATTENTION TO MY SOLUTION WHICH WORKS?!
ok, my step by step process (AFAIK) works for Windows ME at least. Probably for the other windows systems too. Im not sure about the MAC, but you can try it.

Well, if you cant open levels, that means that JJ2 (MAC) has too many in the homecooked. So you need to delete ALOT. So in order to host levels in the home cooked files, you have to delete files which either you hate and will never host, so, no matter what the maximum holding capasity is, you have to delete enough files for (your file number limit) to go down from the highest number. Best do alot so it can acumulate and do the process again.
Rinse. Lather. Repeat.
