Any Linux experts around?
Erm. Yo.
I currently have Linux installed on my PC, but I want to install Windows as well so I can play JJ2. Of course, I still have my mother and her partner to help me install it, but they're not online a lot recently, so.. yeah. If it's of any help, my Linux distribution is Simply Mepis 2004, my harddrive is mounted at hdd, my root partition is hdd8, I think... Help would be muchly appreciated.

You need to have a separate partition for Windows. Do you have one, or is the entire drive used for Linux partitions? Or do you have more than one drive? /dev/hdd usually corresponds to the fourth hard drive.
You can run the command "fdisk -l /dev/hdd" (that's a lowercase 'L', not an uppercase 'i') to see a list of all the partitions on /dev/hdd. The command "df" will list all the currently mounted partitions/devices, and the file /etc/fstab should list all the partitions/devices with mount points.

Rule of thumb. Install order should go:
DOS Windows 95 Windows 98 Windows ME Windows NT Windows 2000 Windows XP Linux The Microsoft bootloader does not support Linux. The Linux bootloader does support Windows/DOS. Therefore Windows should be installed before Linux. If you have extra space on the Linux drive for some reason, or if you have another blank hard drive it is possible to install Windows and then come back and restore the Linux bootloader. I don't know how to do that, though. Especially since I never heard of that version of Linux before...

That's quite easy Conker. You just boot by using a Linux bootdisk. Mount the original Linux partition, make it your system root. And run the command "lilo". But that obviously only works when you use the Lilo bootloader. I don't exactly know how GRUB works, but it shouldn't be a lot harder.
I am writing a tutorial on how to run JJ2 in Wine. Maybe you'll be interested... |

Sorry for the late reply, my browser died when I typed one before.
Newspaz, I would be VERY interested indeed! But would that also allow me to make levels? And... Link, thank you a lot. But apparently, mother has a "surprise" for me and doesn't want me to install Windows... eh. *shrugs* o_o;;

And what does your mother know about computers? All computers should have Windows on them.

Hmm? A machine running Linux only and the closest thing is WineX simply for jj2? I don't see anything wrong with that ![]() And I think Faw's mom was the one that installed everything on there, the multiple paritions over several hard drives with Linux. That's quite a mother.

Well, I can understand her not wanting her to do it because she doesn't know how to do the bootloader/partition stuff.... better to have a working OS than two non-working OSes I guess....
Windows is a must whether you think Wine is a solution or not. It doesn't solve everything.

Chances are, she knows how to use loadlin to access the linux kernel and re-run a LILO configuration with Windows in mind. And if she doesn't, Faw just learnt how to get rid of that "rule of thumb" limitation.

I know this is kind of unrelated... but it was an interesting find, nonetheless.
Instructions on how to install Win9x after WinNT: http://www.petri.co.il/install_windo...windows_xp.htm Well, I'm glad I finally found instructions for that... I want Windows 98 for legacy appzzzzz.
