No need for that.. but what would be helpful is some details. Does it open/close the CD tray? Does Windows recognize the CD drive? Can you read a CD? Does it make strange noises? Does smoke come out of it when you start your computer? . . .

(1). Yes it does.

(2). I don't understand what you mean...

(3). No, it refuses to read ANY of them.

(4). You can bet it does! And I don't mean the usual strange noises, I mean 5x more whirring and such. It even leaves the light blinking! And after awile, it just gives up on reading the CD altogether and leaves that "standby" light on the CD drive on. It's just crazy!

(5). Thank goodness no! If it did, I'd obviously think it was gonna explode, and I don't even want to think about what I'd do!

Hmm... Try and make a windows 98 start up (kabooom your installation failed miserably and you must reinstall or fix it without hope) disk. That has some universal drivers on there (well, mostly universal).

I have a Windows 95, not 98, and I don't wanna waste money on buying new software that might not work.

Do you see an icon for your CD drive in "My Computer"?

Go to "Control Panel", and double click on the "System" icon. Do you see any ! or ? anywhere? Click the plus [+] Next to [CDROM]... is you drive there? Does it have a ! or ? next to it?

Er, nm, I checked, and nothing's wrong there.

Note: I DO notice a strange occurance that whenever MOM plays the computer, the CD drive pretty much works. Does it like her?

Try asking her, and if you'll ask I'll give you the files to put on a disk that you can boot up from and access your cd drive (or just load them in thru a dos prompt)

Well, it doesn't ALWAYS work, and altho my upstairs computer has JJ2 v.1.22 on it, the files are too big for floppies.

I think I need some advice on how to FIX it.

*note:We have a moldy old Windows 3.1 that has a working CD drive, but I'm not sure it's compatible(sp?) with a Windows 95. And I CANNOT press the thumb release things on the sides of the computer. I NEED help*

If it's a physical problem with the drive (which it sorta sounds like it might be), then all you can do it replace it.

I'd also suggest re-installing the drivers if you can.

Click the Start button, then 'Settings', then 'Control Panel'. Now double click on 'System' and from the tabs at the top choose 'Device Manager'. You will see this:

Look under the CDROM section, and see if there is anything that has a ! or a ? on top of the icon. For example, right now my 'Microtek Parallel Port Host Adapter' has a problem, because of the yellow ! on the icon. Now double click on the one with a problem, and it will give you a window with info about the device, including the 'Device Status' which has information about what is wrong with the device.

If there is nothing wrong there, try this:

Double click 'My Computer' on the Desktop, and double click your CD-ROM drive while there is a CD in the drive. What error message comes up? 'D: is not accessible. The device is not ready. [ Retry ] [ Cancel ]'?

Try right clicking on the CD icon, and choose 'Eject'. Does the CD tray open?

I had this problem once on an old school computer: There was something stuck inside the drive and the door wouldn't close all the way. When this happened, it would make a big grinding noise and the light would keep blinking because it was trying to close the tray. It is still broken now, because they never got around to fixing it, but I would suggest taking the drive out and seeing if anything is stuck inside.

That is all I can really help with, so I hope you can fix it. Try asking your mom if she notices any problems with the CD drive. If she doesn't notice anything wrong, it is probably something you are doing wrong, or all the CD's you try are bad.

But nothing's stuck, it closes all the way, and it ejects.

The solution: Replace it with one of our other computer's CD drives.

The problem is now considered solved.

I would like a moderator to close this topic.

There's no need to close the topic, even if your problem is solved.

You can get the last list server patch I made here.
