I don't remember which Final Fantasy it was... Anyway, which looks better, with or without outlines?

I say with just because there's more detail, but you should also try:
1) Colored outlines (like, if the thing they are outlining is red, make them dark red)
2) Outlines with varied thickness (thicker on objects that are closer, or along the outsides)

I'd say without, all you need is more detail in the eyes.
