Rant about 4chan.

So, I joined the Smash World Forums.

The official Super Smash Bros. Brawl website updates weekdays with new info, and sometimes it gets controversial. There was an update about a new character, Zero Suit Samus, who is Samus without her suit. Apparently, she does transform by using her Final Smash, which requires items. Naturally, competitive players who play without items were (-) by the idea that that is the only method of acquiring her because it reduces the possible amount of characters you can "main". So much for that.

So a thread was started discussing this subject, and it quickly got turned into an argument about items in competitive play. One particularly passionate player and defender of the competitive way of playing quickly attracted all the attention, as always. He has a habit of calling people "scrubs" who are newbies and complain about the way competitive players play.
The thread soon got infested with "new members" from 4chan who made fun of him. It continued for a long time until the thread got locked.

This member is now the new thing at 4chan, and he happens to be a friend of mine.
He never used the word "scrub" to describe anyone who just plays for fun. According to his own definition, it describes "someone who has ficticious rules made up in their head that they believe to be the true way to play and will try to force them on others through such methods as calling techniques that they do not like glitches, or just cheap".
In the end of the thread, did he keep arguing? No. During the onslaught of posts directed at him revealing nothing but pure ignorance, he laughed and played along.
This is a man who knows when he's wrong and merely has a loose mouth when arguing about what he's passionate about.
He plays the piano, and he plays it beautifully.

People from 4chan have infiltrated his Youtube account with said piano pieces in it and spammed him with hundreds of ignorant comments, someone wrote a song about him and posted it in the forums with photos of Hitler, people on 4chan post "as him", with pictures of his birthmark that they make fun of.

Anyone with the least bit of a heart would realize they are dealing with a person after listening to any of those songs.

I know this is a strange rant, but... this is a man who has deserved my respect for several reasons. But what is happening here... I don't understand it. I don't get it. It's almost driving me to (-)ing tears to think that humans can be so... completely without compassion.

Without compassion.

If anyone can be compared to nazis, it is them. Nazis were without compassion. They murdered methodically and were blissfully ignorant of the fact they were dealing with human beings. This is no different. These 4chan people... not just them... all those who are what I'm describing now... they are the nazis of nihilism.
You can find something "hilarious" in anything you want to. Emo kids? lol. World hunger? lol. Sick orphan? lol. Guy ranting about how sick the world is? roflcopter.

There's no compassion. They just see what they want to see. Words. Words are put into categories, the category fits, you got yourself a stereotype. Congratulations. You may now mutilate the worthless stereotype's soul.

Are we really so bored? Are we bored enough to justify this?

I know this is an anecdotal case, but it is the only one I am directly related to. And it is not the only time, I am sure.
He is going to be okay.
If it had been me, I would have killed myself.
Is that really worth it?

I know at least one of you guys frequents 4chan. How do you justify this?

If all threads operated on a "laugh you lose" basis, I would've just lost.

Anyway, they're just 4chan people, it's not like they matter. They're just going to do whatever some other 4chan person does, until eventually they're all doing the same thing. Avalanches are quite beautiful if you admire them as a natural phenomenon.

It's easy enough for your friend to ignore them because he has at least one actual relevant skill and stuff, while these people are interweb fightin'. I think it's safe enough to assume nobody who frequents 4chan will ever make a difference in the world and will never reproduce, so acknowledging anything they say is sadder than feeling sorry for confetti.

Yeah, or Odin will go "LOL you care about something on the internet". Which 4chan people do not, of course.

Anyway, what can you say about this? It is clearly pathetic, a very good example of how the anonimity of internet encourages otherwise normal people to do things that would be completely unacceptable in "real life" (and which they wouldn't dare to do in real life anyway, if the impression I get of the so-called "/b/tards" is only slightly correct). Radium's last sentence kind of matches my opinion.

Actually, the correct retort would be Godwin's law.

Well, thank you guys for reaffirming my not completely negative view on humanity.
It's certainly easy to ignore those people, for me at least. Not so much if you are actually affected.
What unsettles me so much is the concept itself... that the egoism of modern teenagers utters itself in this herd mentality and this ruthless ridiculing of everything they don't understand... it scares me.

I guess this is what a tragic revelation feels like.

You seem to have touched on some large part of why 4chan is awful. It's filled with ignorance. See, 4chan is a phenominally awful website in the fact that it is so horribly contentless and stupid that it draws people who are similar. The average 4chan user is the same person who obsesses over cat memes, flash animations and to get down to the point, stupid bull(-). See, they're the bottom of the barrel of human society based on the sheer fact that their identity becomes defined by a website that rewards them based on their ignorance.

You can't argue against an a mass like 4chan. They gain strength through mocking people on their forums and circle-jerking, or the act of one person insulting and then 5 people giving him highfives and then insulting the other person, spawning more high fives. They don't debate, they're internet fighting and mocking. One person can't fight against their forum because the mass is so attuned into itself that you'd have to persuade a thousand people who won't listen to you but instead just sit around and laugh at their cat memes. A person can't fight that on their own forum.

However, the people who visit and identify with 4chan in real life are most likely spineless overweight individuals with no friends but a nasty self-serving attitude. Like Rad said, they're not going to make a difference in the world because they think they're above it, even though they're some of the worst. It doesn't matter what they thing because all you have to do is hop on a different site and they've lost their power over you.

4chan is a pretty pathetic place and a lot of its frequenters are likewise. Basically, 4chan represents the worst of the internet. It's like the worst memes, the most disgusting shock images, and the worst of the internet's porn and hentai congealed and formed a website.

Now, I'm not saying there's anything wrong with finding an internet meme funny (I rather like the Giant Enemy Crab one, although that's really a GameFAQs and NeoGAF one) or using humour to deal with otherwise sad and depressing subjects, but 4chan and its ilk simply take it too far because there's nothing to 4chan but that.

4chan is simply the worst stereotype of internet users personified. I think pretty much everyone here is above that.

Exactly. There's tons of other boards, like /v/ (video games), /g/ (technology), /k/ 9weapons), even /ck/ (food and cooking). /b/ used to be good, but it turned into the secondary hangout for people from Gaia Online. Everyone "cool" (I guess based on your interpretation) filtered out into the other boards and to other knockoff sites like 7chan and 420chan.

Also, Fawriel, does your friend happen to be Dylan_Tnga? In which case, pretty much all of /v/ (the people behind this) would tell you that he deserves what he got, and fully accepted what he's getting right now by doing things like threatening to kill Sakurai (the guy behind Brawl) over the Zero Suit Samus update. You wouldn't be the first person to contemplate suicide over getting trolled by 4chan. Very recently, a girl posted a video on YouTube about the "emo scene" and how people tease them. 8 hours later she nearly overdosed on her heart medication.

But if you have a problem about 4chan making fun about your Internet friend, that's okay. Just hang in there. In two weeks time the trolling will stop completely and your friend can go back to normal whining about scrubs or whatever. 4chan is a destructive force, but they get bored easily, especially if there's a new target. I've seen this happen before.

And no, I won't call you a gay furry lover if you hate 4chan. That one time in IRC was a joke. Also, there's some worse communities out there.

They do.

Problem is, /b/'s raids on Gaia Online have resulted in some people from Gaia to migrate to /b/. Of course, acting like complete idiots. Since /b/ has no rules and the moderators didn't care enough to ban anyone, they're allowed to run rampant. Most of them have been scared off by /b/'s ability to display the very worst of human nature, but some still remain. They've become ingrown now, yelling at new Gaia members coming to /b/ to "gb2/Gaia/". The best way to tell a Gaia(-) is to make a troll thread on /b/ pretending you're a Gaia(-) yourself.

Haha. Of course they'd tell me that, because they filtered out what they wanted to hear.
Everybody says "I'm going to kill x" sometimes. It wasn't meant literally and he took it back.
And he does not whine. You were not in the thread. I read it as it was happening, and it was nothing short of headache-inducing.
Dylan is just a guy who goes straight to the point. There was no discussion about "scrubs" until people started making fun of the competitive scene for not using items and getting what they deserve or something like that, if I recall correctly. He joined the discussion and called those who fit the definition, scrubs. Sure, he was banned for "name-calling", but whether it was right or not to say that, in the end he was a lot more honorable than some guy pretending to be arguing but completely ignoring any points made or even some person who pretended to be Dylan's mother or something.
He never whined. He was distressed by the update due to worries that the game will be hand-fed to the casual audience only, ignoring the competitive scene. He calmed down soon, but they saw nothing but whining and (-)ing.

And yay for calling him an "internet friend". But whatever.
I was hoping it would be more short-lived than that when I first heard about it. But I guess it's something you can do nothing against.

...I guess I've calmed down.

Is there any special reason for adding the part about the girl who nearly killed herself, by the way?

It shows that suicide is a very common debating tactic on the internet.

Nobody deserves to be mobbed. Especially not like that. The "deserves/deserved it" rationale is a pathetic attempt at hiding a fundamental wish to just bully someone and see him suffer (and classic bully argument). The positive contribution of mobbing like that is zero. Hanging out at 4chan and mocking people won't make those people doing that happy in the long run, and getting mobbed does not somehow "improve" the world or really rid it of anything.

(to pre-empt any-one possibly saying "bad people deserve it!! like Hitler!!", bad people should be brought to justice or made to stop through rational means, not mob rule)

Just noting exactly the same with fitting people into boxes and stereotyping is happening in what you're saying.

Mostly because Super Smash Bros. is a party fighting game. Trying to strip out things like items and stages to remove any semblance of random-ness just turns it into Tekken. /v/ doesn't like Dylan (and tourney(-)s) in general because they tend to be annoying and are seen as people who can't play the game the way it was meant to be played. Personally, I side with /v/ on the matter, but that's another story.

I called him an Internet Friend because that's really what he is. A friend on the Internet. Didn't mean any overtones or anything. I have tons of Internet friends. It's not a big deal.

And yes, 4chan trolling is something you can't really do anything about except ignore. Don't try to fight back, it's (-) in an ocean of (-). Just sit back and enjoy it. They do it for the lulz. Lulz with them.

Mostly to add anecdote to how strong 4chan can be. But like I said, go with the flow.

Another story entirely. It just goes to show their ignorance, though. Melee is actually a very competitive game with an active tournament scene and one of the few fighting games that don't have one or two characters that are the only ones who can potentially win a battle.

But I won't get further into that lest this so far intelligent rant starts to seem like I'm whining.
Either way, what Frank said is the truth.

I've never said anything about stereotyping being wrong. Stereotypes aren't something you can make "go away" by avoiding stereotyping people, as people stereotype themselves. You imitate someone you look up to, or even someone who is just nice to you. Before you know it, someone else is imitating him or you, and soon you've created a group of people who act very similar and can successfully be stereotyped.
As nice as it is to believe stereotypes are some bane to society forced upon the innocent populace, most people live up to stereotypes on their own. If you hang around with a very "stereotypeable" group, it's your duty to let others know you're different.

What I find funny, though, is that SSBM, which is a game meant for parties and to pass the time, is taken seriously. But I agree, the debate here isn't SSBM, it's the morality of what /v/'s doing, which of course it isn't (who am I to argue otherwise?).

For the most part, I agree with FQuist. Problem is, though, is that most people on 4chan don't want to seriously kill Dylan or anything. Like I said, they do it for the lulz.

It's nice and all of you to defend him Fawriel but regardless he's still guilty of creating an INTERNET DRAMA. Who in their rightful mind would want to spend their time insulting people over something like a Super Mario game and on a site like 4chan? Common sense is not so common.

Mewcario the Second is the worst spoof name ever, btw.

lol you gotta be (-)ting me.
did the JCF just get 4chan'd?

God.
There are few things on the internet that bother me as a person, and two of those things are 4chan and YTMND.
It's just so..entirely amazing to me that people can be so stupid, so base, and have so much time on their hands.

Hey, I like YTMND D=. It's easy enough to find the good ones.

I don't mean the memes (if so they can be called) - I'm talking about the community.
I've laughed my (-)(-)(-) off at quite a few YTMND sites, but the people that live in that community's forum(s) are just..almost as bad as 4chan.

I struck up this conversation once with a guy who was fixing my cable connection, and he was telling me about this family that had a mentally handicapped kid who's entire life was the internet, and how he felt guilty for every second the kid's internet was down. It was actually quite sad.

Threads expire and are pruned automatically by our software at a relatively high rate. Since boards are limited to six or eleven pages, content is usually available for only for a few days before it is removed. Most times, your post was probably flagged as old and marked for deletion by our software, however in some cases it may have been removed by our staff. We ask that users refrain from reposting material that they believe may have been deleted by the administration.

Then tomorrow we may all be dead, but how would that be different from any other day? This is a war, and we are soldiers. Death can come for us at any time, in any place. Now consider the alternative. What if I am right? What if the prophecy is true? What if tomorrow the war could be over? Isn't that worth fighting for? Isn't that worth dying for?
