This was a damn good way to spend 20 minutes.
Has anybody ever heard of "Apology Mode" before?

Yeah, I've never seen the name "Apology Mode" itself because I could never find a copy old enough to still have the cheat in it, but APOGEE is definitely on all the old cheat lists and I've always wondered what it looked like. Neat! Nice work on including some beta screenshots, too. The only factual inaccuracy I remember was the implication that only some episodes had secret levels, when in fact there's a 1:1 ratio.

Saw this yesterday when Cliff himself retweeted it (!)
It's nice how that guy made a clear and understandable review while summing up the whole history of the game in just 20 minutes. And his collection = awesome! ![]()

I now can call myself a true Jazz Jackrabbit fan. It'd be interesting to see him review JJ2 as well. Anyone up for greeting him when he comes online to try out the gameplay? Jake, pwn him
![]() Oh and make sure he doesn't forget about the things this community has done for JJ2.

Because you're totally not the best player and once you pwn him, you can be all, "Heh, don't worry, there's plenty of players way better than me. >:D"

This is totally awesome! It's not very often I learn new things about Jazz! Anyone know where the old beta videos are from?

There aren't known videos of JJ1 beta, but those and other screenshots are on Haze's Hideout. (Not sure where Haze got them, mind.)

That was an awesome review, really makes me nostalgic for the Jazz games. While I haven't been an active community member in a long time, I still consider the Jazz games among my top favorites of all time. And dang, Jazz Jackrabbit really set the standard for videogame soundtracks! I look forward to a similar review for JJ2.
And I really want Good Old Games (GOG.com) to put up some Epic Classics other than Unreal. Come on GOG and Epic! People need a legit way to get Jazz 2 again!

Here's something that might interest some of you. As I discovered, apparently my copy of Jazz is actually old enough to contain the APOGEE cheat. As mentioned in the video, using the cheat will display the text "Apologee Mode" while turning on slow motion and loading a very limited color palette.
...what wasn't mentioned in the video however is that if you enter the cheat a second time, the game will revert to the original settings, while displaying a text string reading "Cool Mode".

CelL, could you upload your JAZZ.EXE someplace? Given how many other files besides the .exe are required to run JJ1, just the one file should be kosher, and I really am curious now.

After watching this video, I went to a certain website, from there, I downloaded Jazz Jackrabbit Shareware 1.0. And it had the APOGEE cheat. You can find that website here. It's completely legal, by the way, no warez on that site. It's actually recommended by Ancient DOS Games(Another old games review site found here), so it can't be evil. He only supports legal things, so yeah. Anyway, back on topic, that review was awesome. All I need now is a JJ2 Review, and an Earthworm Jim/Earthworm Jim 2 Review, and I'll be able to explode with happiness.

CelL, you do realize that my previous post says where you can download the Shareware Version of Jazz 1 of any version(1.0, 1.1, 1.3), right? 1.0 has the APOGEE cheat, I checked.

Aww, that's so cool. The episode select screen doesn't work when I swap out the .exe files, but I can get into levels using save files. Nice to see my own blocksets in reduced color mode. I even found a bug -- if you type APOGEE again, it reverts back to normal; if you cycle to the next level with APOGEE still turned on, the color count is restored but palette swapping remains disabled.
edit: What's weird is that in my 1.3, I think JAZZ.EXE is just a wrapper for FILE0001.EXE. I wonder how that change came about. |

If anyone's wondering what Apology mode looks like, here is an article with a screenshot on an old dos game site:

Well, I'd love to see his take on JJ2 sometime soon. If it isn't soon I'll start flipping tables.
(I'm a huge fan of internet reviewers xD)
