Lag Cloaks...Cheating or helping the slower?
Okay get the story straight here. I am in Unknown File's CTF server with a modified Battle1. I am using my lag cloak at maximum since there were at least a dozen other people in the game. I have a 56k, so it's not a program making lag, it's my connection. I know how to use this to my advantage, and now I'm banned for "cheating".
Here's my question to you: Is using a lag cloak "cheating"?

Is a lag cloak basically a name for a person who can use lag to his advantage. But yes, if you are in a duel, or in JDC, that would be considered cheating, since you have the advantage.

In my case, it's my connection to the server being slow (56k) and these people with faster computers are choking my connection, so my movements are choppy, perhaps allowing me to steal a frag or flag without being seen since they do not have the packets sent fast enough. Yes, a lag cloak is cheating in a duel, but if you are in a CTF server with 13 people and1 person cheating, it should not be a problem...right?
I think that a Lag cloak by their connection is fine, but any programs used for this is cheating. That's just my opinion.

About 2 years ago, some guy named GaleTEC made a program that gave him MAJOOOOR lag and he said it wasnt cheating lol. It also let him transform into some messed up animation he called, "The TEC Beast"

yeah, but with some computers (mine for example) the lag cloak is only apparent in large servers (10+ people) and a duel with just me, the dueler, and the server, there's not much lag at all.
Thank you for your opinion. UnknownFile: IF you see this, and I am using a lag cloak, don't ban me for doing something I am not doing (cheating).

What's a lag cloak?

It is definitely not cheating. It just makes things more fair. Imagine, people with good connection like ADSL have some advanteges. They can roast faster, capture flags faster, get more ammo and stuff, etc. So why shouldn't people with slow connections have any advantages as well? If you are on a fast connection and get roasted out of nowhere it's your own fault for using the fast connection!
Here's how I fight these people. Usually if the server is laggy I always get hit some seconds after I see/don't see myself being hit and no matter where I am (like behind a wall) and where I go. This is one disadvantage for me but in such servers there is also one advantage for me. Sometimes when server lags I can see people standing still or floating in air just like if they were frozen. They're not moving! So what do I do before they disappear? Ehehehe! I start buttstomping them continuously. After buttstomping them a couple of times they disappear or become invulnerable and I can see the roast text appear some seconds after that. I call this the Lag kill. It is not cheating. It is an advantage of people with slow connections. Just like all the advantages people with fast connections have. So nya! Deal with it.

heh. but I'm saying in a CTF server you blow past the CTF base and pass the flag and you're already half way across the field when it says "Xion captured the flag." That's a lag cloak since they never saw it coming and if you can blow past them and to your base it's an instantaneous point.

I shall hereby initiate a long meticulous rant.
All right. Let's begin with this: are 56K users necessarily at a disadvantage when playing against ADSL/Cable users?
FireSworD DM, as you may/may not realize, is a 56K user. He is also a pretty good CTF player (better than most; he even beat Bobbt once in BBlair, even if no one really heard about it). FS does not complain much about lag, it would seem. He is at a slight disadvantage when playing against someone like me (I am on ADSL). However, since his playing style/strategy is far better than mine, he can beat me any day he wants, even if I am hosting the server. My 2.0GhZ Pentium 4 computer is faster than his (I think we both have fast computers, but he says that WindowsXP slows his machine down); I get higher framerates, less lag, etc. than him, but he still beats me in CTF. The conclusion? Lag does not necessarily cause people to play worse than normal. It may be something to blame for slowness, but it is no excuse for simply being a below-average player. To think, this is only JJ2 we are talking about. In UT2k3, I have seen several 56K users (usually, their ping > 500-900ms) who are excellent despite the huge amount of lag they must face. (I've played UT2k3 with 56K numerous times when ADSL dies, the lag is usually horrible and you can't use half the weapons. I usually just shut up and play, though.) Still, 56K people can perform better than ADSL/Cable users; it usually depends on their playing style. If you're wondering about the screenshot, it was taken after the match, after a lot of people left. I had pings up to 600-700ms during the heavy fighting. Yeah, 56K can be a hassle, but if you're as good as you think you are, it shouldn't hurt you a whole lot. `pranx0rific Last edited by VelKa; Jan 21, 2003 at 09:34 AM. |
