Expirations
This was brought up in #jj2 recently. A quick search using Verisign Domain Whois reveals that both jazzjackrabbit.com (the "official" less-than-daily Daily Carrot) and logicware.com (the server the server list, the current one, is on), expire soon:
Jazzjackrabbit Record expires on 03-May-2003. Record created on 02-May-1997. Logicware Record expires on 14-Jun-2003. Record created on 13-Jun-1995. Both of these dates are coming soon, and when they come the sites may go down. After all, Jazz Jackrabbit is in Epic's opinion dead. It would be nice if the community could take over that URL. However, what worries me is that Logicware expires this June. Being bankrupt, they might not renew - meaning that, correct me if I am wrong, the main list server would go down. I suppose what my question is would be will this cause the list server to go down if they do not renew and can anything be done about it? |

I repeat again, where is Monolith when you need him?
![]() Yes, we really should take www.jazzjackrabbit.com over. We should have something that links to J2O, or maybe just something that forwards. I think it would increase the number of Jazz Jackrabbit fans which is always a plus.

I don't see any problem with us getting jazzjackrabbit.com. Originally we thought that JJGBA might take it over, but that hasn't happened. I might end up sending my letter.

Not a problem at all! If Logicware lapses, we just grab it up and redirect the listserver to anywhere we choose! And even better, since we can do the same thing with the Jazzjackrabbit one--newbies will never be lost again! (:

well, even if the main server lists go down, (which is bad of cource) we still could maybe connect by IP's. Or would that go down with the whole servers?

We'd just need to find a volunteer to host a new perminent list server and then make a little registery pacth for everyone to download. If you guys could get ahold of jazzjackrabbit.com and put a list server at the original address, that'd be really cool.

(did someone say my name?)
I don't think Epic will let any domain they own expire. However, if jazzjackrabbit.com does expire, I think it would be great if someone in the community would pick it up. We may or may not be able to leagaly hold and use that name -- I don't know. Same goes for logicware.com. If it happens that we loose all official list servers, I should be able to bring mine back up. It won't be at the same address that I previously used (monolith.idlegames.com), and I'm still working on finding a way to have my domain resolve more reliably than it is now. I just want to avoid this because getting everyone to update their registry is annoying.

Losing our primary list server would be more of a nusance than anything. There is software out there which allows you to set up a listserver for jazz2. The hard part is simply getting other players to use it.

Yeah, that's the problem. On the one hand, we could get a lot of new players via the URL www.jazzzjackrabbit2.com, but on the other hand, many will leave if the main listserver is down. Those who don't browse the internet searching for a JJ2 site wouldn't have chances to join us then. I fear that many will rather think it is an unsolvable bug of jj2 that the servers don't show up...

I think we ought to utilize a domain sniper--there are people out there who snap up domains as they expire so they can sell them at huge profits--we can't let that happen.

What we need to do first is probably ask epic if we could take over jazzjackrabbit.com
About the listservers, we either can try keep them going or we could bring up a different listserver (as monolith said) but this willbe a great nuisance.

I doubt Epic doesn't know the domain is going to expire. And if they don't realize it, this would only remind them. If Epic renewed the domain then jazzjackrabbit.com would remain as-is...and as-is does not contain information about the list server patches, the J2O and surrounding community, all the news about jazz2 that has passed, etc. However if they somehow forget or pay late, we could grab the domain, redirect it to j2o or something, and I garauntee we'd get many, many newbies. Epic could easily repurchase the domain, but they haven't. That means either something is wrong or they don't care anymore. Hopefully it is the latter...ironically.

Losing the serverlist would be bad think off all those poor newbies hosting battle 1 all that would never happen unless they gavce each other thier Ips anyways ... Having the offcial Jazz site would rule and it could acctually be UPDATED

We should buy Monolith www.jazzjackrabbit.com and let him have a listserver at list.jazzjackrabbit.com . The index can say that this website is dead and tell them to go to www.jazz2online.com .

Doing a whois on logicware.com, I get:
Updated Date: 05-nov-2001 Creation Date: 13-jun-1995 Expiration Date: 12-jun-2004 So, unless I'm missing something, I guess Burger updated it. Yay. ![]() Jazzjackrabbit.com, on the other hand, still expires May 3rd. If epic lets it go, then sure, I say we grab it and make it a list server. I don't know if it would be a good idea to run a webserver for it, though, even with a site just redirecting to jazz2online.com...Legal issues surrounding domain names and trademarks aren't very clear, and getting a cease and desist letter from Epic is the last thing we want. But anyways, we can worry about that when and if when we DO get it; right now we should be worrying about obtaining the domain name in the unlikely event that Epic lets it expire. Any volunteers? ^^ |

I don't know what either of you are talking about, but OK...

Frankly, newbies seem to be a not-yet-lost race of Jazzers who don't really care how or what they play. As long as they have people in their servers, all is good. This in itself is a vicious circle, because people join servers simply because they're there, which encourages the hosts to make more servers as careless as the one being played. Another reason why n00bs should be mauled by a polar bear and vaporized with a small thermonuclear missile launcher. [/n00b-bashing] Although, you are right. Losing the serverlist would be bad. It would be a lot more needlessly complicated to join games. No one likes complexity, except for evil masterminds, who make their plans overly complex for no really good reason. But anyway, enough ranting. I'll shut up now.

Heh, sorry for the lurking here on my behalf with this post. o.O
I was wondering that if the serverlists were to expire, no longer to be supported by Epic some day in the future perhaps, then there might be a chance in persuading Epic into selling the JJ2 community the serverlist itself, right? o.O Namely the jazzjackrabbit.com one. If the JJ2 community contributes some sort of a donation to a fund dedicated to purchasing the rights to owning and operating the domain/serverlist, it would seem a bit more fair than just letting a single person be responsible for purchasing it themselves... o.O ...You can count on my support for this ^_- (I'd send it in ALL CANADIAN FUNDS, MWAHAHA! ^_- ...o.O ) With the expiration date drawing ominously nearer as each day passes, we really should find a quick and appropriate solution to this dilemma, if in the event Epic were to discontinue the domain... o.O ...Did someone already send an inquiry as to the future of jazzjackrabbit.com and the logicware serverlist to Epic already? If not, then we should compile an inquiry ASAP in hopes of obtaining an outlook, and establish some sort of logical, and fair plan... o.O ...To make a summarization of the above... We should: Email Epic->Post reply public->If... a)They discontinue supporting the domain-> Persuade Epic to selling us the rights to own and operate the domains >=) Achieved through-> i) Diplomatic relations (i.e-Lots of $$$ offered :-p) ii) Mind CONTROL! >=) (My favourite option here...^_^) b)They plan to continue keeping the domains-> We sigh with relief :-p

Theres nothing happening here Jazz is gonna loose its server lists ahhh. With the jazz GBA being absoultly &^%$ I'm gonna kill myself if nothing happen just remember if this happens . No Clans because people wouldnt be able to join and the host would be telling everyone " My Ip is , Noo nooo its , argh its this , no you dont get it do you " . That would be ANNOYING

I get an expiration date for www.logicware.com of 2004 from www.verisign.com and 2003 from www.networksolutions.com. Waa?

I say we all pitch in and make a giant local area network cable going completly around the world. This would solve the whole problem, and only cost about 100 billion dollars.
