I find the topics annoying, and I was considering suggesting a thread where people can just say they are leaving/returning and whatnot.

Enig,I doubt those people would mind if this was the official topic to announce such things...

Well,I dun really mind,especially cos those topics are great fun if the person is behaving n00bish!^^

It's an attempt by users to feel as if they are wanted when they begin to feel that their prescence is not needed. They enjoy the attention of having people worry over them, which is natural. Still, it gets a bit annoying.
