Jazz2 and WineX

Does anyone here play Jazz2 under WineX? I am considering trying it, but before I do so I'd like to hear from anyone who's done it to learn about any issues they may have experienced. If you run it, what version of WineX do you use? How does the game run (and what's your processor speed and video card)?

I'm also worried about recent versions of WineX possibly breaking support for Jazz2. Does anyone know if this be a possible issue?

I have played it using Wine (I think a quite old version, it came with Knoppix 3). But it would only work if I ran it windowed (I think you can set it that way using a parameter). It ran slow, but it worked .

Most important system specifications:
Pentium IV 1800mhz
512MB RAM
GeForce4 4200ti

I've ran Jazz 2 both under Wine and WineX successfully with sound even. I can't get it to do full screen though, and it runs fairly slowly in 640x480. However, sound works and so does internet play.

I think one has to pay for WineX now though, but the latest versions of Wine (free) have worked fine for me.

Note that this is a Pentium III 500MHz with 640MB of RAM, running Gentoo Linux with kernel version 2.4.21. I'm not sure about the video card, I think it's a Diamond Stealth III with 32MB of memory.

You can get the latest versions of WineX for free off of the CVS tree (from the download link on transgaming.com). The only thing the CVS tree is missing is copy protection and texture compression, since that's proprietary stuff, apparently. I'd like to be able to play in full-screen mode, so I'd rather use WineX than Wine.

Guess I'll go try it. Thanks.

Wine is NOT an Emulator!

It's a Windows compatibility layer. I think WineX was especially designed for games and has some DirectX features built in.

It works great. I had trouble installing WineX from the CVS tree, so I paid for a 3 month subscription so I could install it from a binary. Jazz2 runs at a steady 70 FPS in full screen on most levels with ambient lighting on and low detail off and so forth--about the same as in windows. The only problem is that sound effects don't play (though the music does), and that's not a big issue.

Did you have to do anything special to get full screen to work? I've tried both with an old version of WineX and a newer version of Wine without success. I'll try getting WineX from the CVS though, and see if that works.

I accept your correction since I really don't know much about it.

Me neither. I just visited that wine site a couple of times.

And of course, I always wanted to say that to someone

I've heard that full screen doesn't work in Wine from several other sources, but it works just fine for me in the latest version of WineX. (Which is good, since I only get 10-15 FPS in windowed mode.)

Tell me if you have to do anything special to compile WineX...I got a registry related error when I tried to, so I'm curious.

(Oh, and Newspaz's response was correct.)
