What kind of storylines do you prefer in a levelpack?
Well, do tell.
The storyline to my big levelpack is not nearly done yet, so it can still be changed a lot depending on what you like. I'm fine with almost anything. =P This could also be a help for anyone possibly thinking of a storyline for their own episode. The choices you have are: Lighthearted - Nothing serious at all. Pretty much like the previous JJ storylines, I guess. Dark - People dying. Actual evil things. And action! Funny - Anything funny, parodies, etc. "Princess Eva has been kidnapped by Devan's pet monkey Kinky Kong! Find the Hammer of Fortune to beat it, and the Cheese of Doom for no particular reason!" Or something like that. =P Sad/Dramatic - Even sadder and very touching. Or simply touching. I don't remember anymore what this levelpack was called like that told you a story, "Another Story", I think... that would be a good example of real good drama. Action - JAZZ KICKS BUTT! <- whole storyline Complex - Bringing some more thought into the world of Jazz Jackrabbit - Are Devan's goals perhaps not that ill? Is there more behind Spaz? Etc, etc... I guess that covers just about everything. And my own vote goes for Complex.

Considering that this is Jazz2, that we are talking about, Comedy. I chose action, because the next best thing to comedy is action, imo. And I think Jazz is all about action.
Incomplete thought, how careless of me, har har, I've never done that before. BTW, wrong forum.

When I think of repeated kidnapping, innumerable deaths, destruction of countless natural habitats, massive robbery, attempted destruction of (presumably) multiple planets, clone machines, attempted temporal genocide and paying a visit to hell itself, the first word that comes to mind is not "lighthearted". But maybe that's just me.
And "Another Story" needs some actual character development before I'll count it as a story. Or at least some more gameplay to make it better. |

I'm thinking Rabbit Holocaust.
The occupation of Carrotus. I'm writing... ![]() Edit: erm, not for a level pack, though...

How about something that doesn't distract from what counts the most...THE GAMEPLAY. An RPG can have a dark, complex storyline since the gameplay is somewhat minimal. Just don't deck the gameplay for a very poor storyline. (hint hint FF7)

Lighthearted? Well, that can be good. However, there is nothing but gameplay to hold the player in. A few too many deaths or long levels and the player will just give up. Nothing will keep them hooked.
As for dark... if it has angst, make it justified and make sure angsty characters never win. The minute an angsty character saves the world, it becomes evident the story was written by an angsty teenager looking to take his anger out on the innocent players. Funny? Well, if you can keep the player laughing, this will work. If you have one good joke every ten annoyingly hard bosses, it just ends up boring. Dramatic can work, but only if the events can really touch the player. Too many storylines end up having the player say "wait, who just died?". Action? Alone? Unless your gameplay kicks infinite... pass... the player will lose interest soon. With complex, make sure any info given is relevant to the story, and, therefore relevant to completing the game. If a player who can't read can beat the game, your storyline sucks. That said, I side with "whatever you think won't suck".

In a good complex story, you can get elements of all those things. So, complex.

I good story must have all elements in it. I want to vote for everything, especially dark and complex, but since that's not possible, I'll just stick to dark.

The "funny story" thing has inspired me to get to work with JCS again. Thank you!
![]() Most choices sound good, but please keep away from action, it sounds dull and has been made so many times.

A complex/funny hybrid. And new characters. And relations between them. And relations between them and the characters we already know. Radical plot twists, good/bad character changes. Don't forget relating to previous Jazz games. Wanting all that made me create the Devil Dash story just like it is, but don't think I'll give spoilers to anyone but betatesters. BUT I'd like to see someone else think of such storyline.

The best is dramatic. But not anybody can do this, because it is hard to write it. In normal situation the best will by lighhearted stories + funny. Action is the best only in multi-player maps (ex. red must kill blue :P). But Coplex is good only with mixing with other types.
So I think, the best story for single player is Drama + Complex

I prefer complex. I always make my stories NOT-jj2-related. Like, for example, my new story:
The Lost Tribe June, 1990(Note: In this year, the turtle-fighting Jazz didn't exist. He was just a drawing.) Diamondus is entirely in peace. Jazz Jackrabbit was having his usual walk through the park. Untill... A troup of Lizards were marching in the park. A large sign said: "Lizard Militairy base. Here to wipe out the Turtles." Jazz was suprised by the word Turtle and started to investigate. Lizard Commander wasn't entirely impressed by his actions and threw his down a well, put down a large number of explosions and closed the pit. Jazz woke up... Deep underground, he found a few marks written on the wall. "What's this?" he wondered. After some exploring, Jazz found the Tribe of Turtles, which told him the most amazing story... "You, Jazz Jackrabbit, are chosen to be our King! You! But, there is one problem... In order to open the Throne Room, you must prove yourself. You must collect the Gem of Fire, Gem of Air, Gem of Blood and Gem of Dreams. Then, you will be our King and never, ever have to worry about anything again!" Will Jazz be able to do this? And why does Devan hate him in the upcoming games, Jazz Jackrabbit 1 and 2? FIND OUT IN: The Lost Tribe Coming soon! |

I like storylines like that, however, the idea of finding gems/other magical items representing some elements has been there before quiet often. There are some spelling mistakes, by the way.
(yes, I know, I shouldn't point out any mistakes - which is why I did. I'm such a rebel.)

Complex.
My level pack (in 5 parts because of stupid 2 MB filesize limits) has really good storyline, good cinematics, and good characters. The sequel will totally OWN the first. A really good storyline with Jazz as a bounty hunter going after his old friend who escaped from the grave. That's the second pack by the way. The first one pales in comparison. |
