How to make tilesets in PSP
How to make a tileset using PSP7
-------------------------------- Tutorial by RosetaJOL. Credits: Someone at a school I used to go to for telling me how to change the size of my brush in psp. Radium for giving me some tips that changed the way I made tilesets. Copy the stencil image from jcs help. Start up psp and on the colour menu choose load palatte... Load the jazz2 color palatte or another jazz2 compatiable tileset such as beach.pal Or you can create your own..but thats not what this tutorial is about ![]() In this tutorial we will use the beach palatte..start up jazz2 and open beach1, change to 8 bit if your in 16 bit. On your left (I hope I got my directions right) you should see two coloured boxes, the left one should be black in colour if its not click it, then click the upper right corner black then press ok. In the view menu select grid, then open up the view menu and click grid and change properties. Change the horizontal and vertical spacing both to 32 then press ok. Keep saving the file every so often (has to be a bmp or pcx or anm to build it in jcs) I recommend you read the tutorial included in the jcs help file. In the view menu, it will have Zoom in by 5, click that then do it again. If you dont see a tool options window somewhere, in the view menu select toolbars... Check tool options palatte then click Close. Press the delete key on your keyboard and it should remove the grid made by the stencil image, however the psp grid should still be showing. On the right you should see a paintbrush somewhere, click it. Move your mouse cursor on the Options Palatte and it will maxamize. Set the brush type to square and the size to 1 which is 1 pixel, the smallest possible dot on a computer screen. I expect you to have some idea of what your tileset is going to be about. Start drawing in a tile with a light or dark shade of a colour and then go to the next light or dark shade..keep going like this and you will get the idea. If you still have trouble figuring it out, take a screen shot in Jazz2 of one of my tilesets and open it with PSP, zoom it in to get an idea of how its done. To make a mask save the file under another filename as the same format. Remove everything you dont want the players to walk on. Hope this helped you, have fun making tilesets! -RosetaJOL MSN: Roseta_LopRabbit@hotmai.com

It skips some things, and is unneccesarily detailed right up to the moment where you actually have to make the tileset. This tutorial needs work.

Out of all the 47 tilesets I made, 19 of them were made like this (mostly all my first sets, Golden Oldies Deluxe pack and Townsville). A good place to start
![]() Apart from that, there is somehting else you need to know about the brush tool. In the options table for the brush, it has some extra features aswell. Hardness and Step. Hardness is basically juist what it syas. Picture trying to paint on a piece of paper with a paintbrush. The harder you push it down the thicker the paint will be. I _ALWAYS_ put the hardness on 100 when I make tilesets. Blending colours above each other is never a good thing in PSP because it uses up all your colours and if you work from a palette I'm not sure fi it will allow you anything below 100 for Hardness anyways. Apart from that, Step is the amount of pixels you want to skip while drawing with your brush. If your rbush is 1 pixel big, and your step is 25, then while you're trying to draw a straight line it will draw a 1 pixel dot every 25 pixels. Set step to 1 to make your life easier ![]() IMPORTANT SHORTCUTS: Brush Tool: 'B' Tool Options: 'Ctrl + O' (I think, I hope ![]() And that's it, Roseta stopped there because, well, that's where you start. This is the part where the more you draw the better you'll get. Just draw whatever's in your head, pixel by pixel (yes, this is how we make tilesets, pixel by pixel). Whatever colour you want to use with your brush, it's on the right hand side toolbar. Apart from that, just hold in Ctrl and click on a colour in the tileset you're working on (if you already placed it in there). Thats about it from me. I'm working on a tutorial type thing for the 'l33t haxor' side of PSP7 (my current tileset technique that Ive been using for ages now), but SSLLOOOWWWLLYY. Why? Because of Warcraft 3, you'll get it when you get it I suppose. Dont expect anything under a month. Heh, funny to think I can make 6 tilesets in under 2 months but I cant make a tileset tutorial in a month ![]()

Bit of advice. Don't bother with Stencil. PSP has a grid function which works even after there's a tile somewhere. Ctrl+Alt+G. Just remember to make your images 320 pixels wide, and a multiple of 32 pizwla high.
