JCS videotutorials?

I always liked to play with level editors for various games (Happyland Adventures, Worms, Liero, etc.), but I've never understood JCS completely. I *was* able to make simple level, but wasn't able to add such basic stuff as enemies and background (background in game was completely black and Jazz leaved trail). So anyone know any good JCS videotutorial series that would help me understand it? Also I wouldn't feel bad if you would point me to instructions on how to convert image files into JJ2 tilesets and make custom animations.

  • There aren't video tutorials for JCS that I'm immediately aware of, but you should check out Howto JCS. It covers all the basics, including how to add enemies and backgrounds, and it uses pictures and very detailed instructions.

  • J2O hosts Disguise's Tileset Resource for tileset building instructions. Both Howto JCS and JCSref have articles specifically dedicated to the compilation process, but they're neither of them very detailed. See what works best for you.

  • Currently the only tool for making custom animations is Jazz Sprite Dynamite, and it's only been used the once that I can think of. It doesn't work well with menu sprites, but it handles ingame stuff okay unless you want to do something drastic like change the number of frames in an animation.

(JCS also comes with its own help file, but that's mainly for looking things up; there's no real narrative tutorial aspect to it. I'd definitely recommend Howto JCS if you're just getting started. Note that the site is quite literally twelve years old and you shouldn't, for example, take its list of water-compatible tilesets as remotely up to date or inclusive.)

*cough cough* everything Violet just said. JCS isn't very easy to learn by playing around with, so I'd highly recommend reading through Howto JCS, it helped immensely when I first started.

You could try my video where I'm making a simple level with layers, events, textured background and stuff. It's a demo of WebJCS but you it's about the same in normal JCS.
