Making xm's takes years of practice to make something good. Personally, I've been messing with them for about 4 years but never really got anywhere until about 6 months ago. Even still, the songs I made shalt never see the light of day. D=.

Or, if you don't mind potentially sloppy results, you can compose a MIDI sequence (arguably easier) and import it into the modplug tracker, and then experiment with it until it sounds good, then save it as a .xm file. Not the best solution, but if you want fast and dirty...
