3D fun!

A month or so ago, I purchased a modeling package from Caligari geared towards creating game content. I got it on sale for $250, and it is normally $300. They also threw in a level exporter for free.

This stuff rocks! I'm watching video tutorials to help me along, and I think I'm really getting the hang of it. It is so much nicer than my first experience of trying to model something. Its very cool.

I have this model of one of my characters, "Ashton". I just made his skeletain today, and have been playing around with my brand new "puppet". The bones are kinda gross looking when in wireframed mode. Kinda like I'm looking at a medical chart of some sort. Mainly my imagination. The boning process was actually quite simple.

Here is Ashton just chillin' in the forest... He actually looks more like a plastic action figure here, which kinda makes me think he'd make a great toy.

This is the model in a game enviroment... with a sloppy looking texture applied. I don't know how to do textures for 3D models well yet...

When I first did the skeletain, I was prety excited and tried it out right away, pulling on his arms and tail and stuff to make him move around. Its really neat. I ended up with some rather funny and awkward poses, trying to figure out how to controll everything. This is one of them...

This is fun. I was playing around with stuff. Textures and bumpmaps and stuff. This scene actually looks a lot more complicated than it actually was. It kinda reminds me of Metal Gear Solid 3...

And finally my favorite one. I like it because it looks very natural. Almost real in a way. And I love the mood of the picture a lot.

Its fun. It looks like I put a lot more effort into this than I actually did too. The computer was the one who handled all the special effects and textures and stuff. I just clicked a few things together is all. The model was actually prety simple to put together too. I have some great video tutorials available . I have a friend who I'm getting together with to make a game, so I'm really excited about that too. Nothing too fancy, just an old school platformer. I've never actually made a game before. I did make lots of attempts though. I was being rather rediculous though, trying to do it all myself. Of course, I got nowhere. Though it was kind of nice to gain a bit of experience.

I hope you enjoyed the images. I had a lot of fun making them.

Oh, and Happy Christmas!

It's incredible hard to make 3D figures look alive. Good luck.

Very nice looking. The poses look quite natural, especially the last one.

Some of the edges look like they're creased too sharp, especially the front of his torso. Not sure if that would show up after texturing, though; can't see it in the textured picture.

Thanks everyone.

Radium - Yeah, the creases don't show up in the game engine like they do in the modeling software. The game engine shades a lot smoother around edges so low polly models don't look as "edgy".
