Heyo all, yet again my router is posing problems. Actually, I'm not quite sure if it's my router this time.

Anyway. I've tried connecting my brother (actually me on my brother's computer) to my own server. The level that I was playing happened to be a custom level. Now, the thing is, a few seconds after it said it was starting to download the level file, it said there was an error downloading the file. It seemed like it had hardly tried. One other problem, similar to this, but not quite, is that my brother can't access our house network. As for the original problem, might I be able to solve it by simply downloading the file (from the internet) onto his machine and play the identical level on my server? I only want to have to resort to this as a last resort, considering my brother doesn't like me being on his computer, and he doesn't like wasting space. Although, I don't know how ANYONE could think JJ2 is a waste of space.

Brother's stats:
Comp: Dell PII 166MHz
OS: Win98
JJ2: 1.24

Thx for the help, pplz, it's greatly appreciated.

I can't remember where I heard this, but I think someone told me that you can't download custom levels over a local network.
  • Have you tried hosting with a regular level?
  • Have you tried putting the custom level on your brother's computer?
  • Have you tried connecting to the server through "Internet Play"?
  • If so, have you tried connecting by choosing it on the server list?
  • Or have you tried (on your brother's computer) entering, in the "Address" space at the bottom of the server list, the internal IP address of your computer (hosting JJ2 server)?
  • Have you tried connecting through "Local Network TCP"?
  • You say your brother can't access the house network. What are the details of this?
  • Can he not see shares on the other computers?
  • Is there nothing in "Network Neighborhood"?
  • Can other computers see him in network neighborhood?
  • Can he access the internet?
  • Normally, to see other computers in the network, you have to be logged in at the Windows Network Logon. Could this be why he can't access the network? Does he just press ESC or click Cancel at the login dialog?
  • Does he have a software firewall on his computer?
  • Do any of the computers have a software firewall?
  • How many computers are on the network?

More information please

1. No.
2. Not yet.
3. Yes.
4. Yes.
5. You can do that?
6. Not yet. Can other players from the Net join a TCP game?
7. A message box appears, saying that he is not allowed to connect to the network, and to contact his administrator (me).
8. Well, all of the shares are inside the Network Neighbourhood, and he can only get to the first Network Neighbourhood screen; he can't access any of the computers yet.
9. All of the online computers appear in his network neighbourhood, but he is apparently not allowed to access them.
10. I can access the files on his computer from anywhere else on the network.
11. He seems to have no problems getting to the internet.
12. That might just be the problem. He does forgo the login screen.
13. No.
14. No.
15. 4.

Y'know, Link, you're very good at this stuff. I tried logging him in with an official username and password, and he's now able to access the network and play network JJ2 games. I have yet to try to download a custom level to his machine, though.

Thx a bunches!
