JCR (Jazz Community Radio)

One day, when lying on my bed, I thought, 'Hey, why not make MP3s to place on J2O for people to hear?' Someone would make a .WAV file containing commentary about what is happening at the time, then i'll convert it to .MP3, then i'll post it on J2O.

The commentary would include:
  • New Tileset Opinions
  • Clan News
  • Advertisments (For services like palette making or beta testing)
  • Audio or Text Letters to the Editor to be Answered
  • Who's Owning Who

Not a bad idea, huh? Just give me the resources to work with, and i'll do it.

Wouldn't it be easier to just post those things on the JCF? Or is this for the novelty factor?

Tell me, how often would you plan on doing this, and tell me what they would have contained for the previous two weeks/months/episodes from now.

By editor, I assume you are talking about yourself. Am I correct in my assumption?

And how is someone going to send a clip to you for you to convert to .mp3? Via email? You have not provided an e-mail adress to the public.

An MP3? That would depend on how long this clip would be. Sound files are always relatively large, although an MP3 should be managable. If it is a half an hour or longer, though, J2O may not be the best place. I'm not exactly sure of the correlation between length/quality and size for MP3s, nor the J2O bandwidth limitations of late, so you probably should get permission from someone who knows more about that sort of stuff like FQuist before doing this.

I don't think it is a viable idea to place those things on J2O, because we don't have a huge amount of bandwith nor space.

Also, can't the one making the .wav file convert it to mp3? What's the use of sending huge files over the internet?

Winamp SHOUTcast is more recommended for such stuff.
Here's a tutorial to set it up: (by codeboy & Dorkboy)
Quote:
Follow these instructions to get it working:
Goto shoutcast.com and download BOTH the server and DJ (client) software from them
First run the server and goto "edit config", follow those instructions... the most important things to change are password and maxuser, save this. Then kill and restart the server.
Now open WinAmp (i am assuming that you have used your intelligence and installed the plugin...). Goto preferences and in the plugins section of the options down the left hand menu select "DPS/Effect"
Click on "Nullsoft Shoutcast Source....." in the window on the right. A new window will pop up and you can close the options
In the new window (Shoutcast Source), click on the "output" tab, and put in the relevant details of where your server is hosted (REMEMBER THAT IF YOU ARE ON A LAN THAT YOU NEED TO CONNECT LOCALLY TO YOUR SERVER [LOCALHOST OR YOUR LAN IP ADDRESS])
Make sure you put in the password you set in the server! Click "connect" and start playing your music! You will want to set the quality of the broadcast at the "encoder" tab.
To allow your friends (if you have any) to listen simply put http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:8000 ... the string of 'x' being your ip .. make sure you use the right port which you have set
I havent listed every minor detail because i'm assuming that you all have a level of intelligence and tech knowledge...

Remember that :

- People CAN rip your broadcasts
- That ie. a 256Kbps upstream will be used by perhaps 4/5 clients at high quality

Tutorial 'Addon'
---------------------------
This will allow you to listen to music while you're station is playing music.

First, download Winamp 5.0 and Winamp 2.91. Download and install Shoutcast (I recommend installing it on 2.91 since it doesn't take as much resources). Set up a server. Now, heres what you gotta do. Start up Winamp 5.0 and check the box that says "Allow multiple instances". This will start up W5 even though W2.91 is running. Now, start W2.91 and start streaming. Now, what you gotta do here is set Winamp 2.91's output plugin to Null. W2.91 won't make a sound after that. You might wonder why you couldnt just lower the sound (since it does have a volumebar). Well unfortunatley the soundbar is integrated with Windows so lowering the sound on Winamp will lower it everywhere (Can't figure out how to describe that in an easier way). Now, boot up W2.91 (I recommend booting it up first), start streaming or whatever. Then boot up W5.0 and listen to music or something. Oh and btw, you can connect to your own channel using "localhost:8000" or your own ip + :8000.

A frequent broadcast would be cool imo. I doubt you can do this daily, but weekly should be possible...like 3 hours each Saturday, at a fixed time. With JJ2 music, interviews and stuff, similiar to AB radio. Would rock imo

I know someone who wants to make a real web-radio himself... if any problems appear, he could probably help.

erm a ready working on a show with ideas (hey, i lead ClanBase.Radio ! ). But from my experiance..

i dont think those what you recommand are enough. Needs more.. alot more. Specially because you cannot ramble 1 hour about nothing or something that short.

Weekly is too much. That would be overkill probably. People in #jj2 said that, too, and I agree. The proposal made was one hour bi-weekly, which is a better idea imo. You can't fill one hour/week. How much beta test requests do you need to broadcast in order to do that? I think you can't fill it.

Ideas I had were to combine it with a jj2 event and possibly a weekly jcs contest. Also there are enough people who want to be invited for a interview, or for example want to broadcast for a while. I think everyone can do radio if they want, but my money is on Shadow, since he did a great job at the bash (he can always temporarily invite guest hosts) and he has the radio equipment ready. That does not mean others can't do it, this is a free society. Nobody is holding someone back for for example having TF radio or CC radio or alike stuff. Perhaps ideas can be combined. For example people like RoW_odin could make a mp3 to be broadcasted by shadow.

I think Shadow could be a good organiser and host, but that we might want to see if we can combine all proposals made here somehow.

I am not sure if this would be possible, but perhaps it could have live content a few times a week (maybe an hour and a half bi-weekly, since an hour might be a bit short) and then - I'm really not sure whether this would be possible or not - an automatic reading of the list server listings. If someone could find a usually-up computer to host such content on, it could be automatic and require little maintenance.

Maybe that's just a pipe dream, though - the trouble would be interpreting the server list output and putting it into the form of a sound file (text-to-speech.) I don't know much about TTS, but does anyone know if that would be possible?

Also, what is "who's owning who?" It sounds interesting, although I'd personally prefer "This Week in Pwnage." ;-P

EDIT: I think Shadow would be an excellent organizer, as he has always been with everything in the past. Perhaps a number of people could read the different stuff, though, as to make it interesting. A review feature could contain synopses of various different uploads compiled from the reviews of those who reviewed them.

TTS is included with any windows xp machine.
Also Ventrillo (the program i use). Has TTS options.

K, fun but that doesn't make it auto yet.

Anyhow, when all things are settled here. Ill start up the show program/schedule then. First 2 months are pure as a trial though.
