The ultimate tileset conversions continue! Unlike Diamondus, Castle and Damn didn’t have a lot of scrapped beta content to recreate (but all we currently know of is here). Unlike Jungle, these are both quite well designed and organized tilesets (but the conversions still feature new, streamlined layouts and many fixes). As you can see in the parentheses, that doesn’t mean there wasn’t anything to work with!
The main reasons for these conversions were: I wanted some genuine-looking Carrotus Castle destruction for my Demon Dash pack… and I wanted a conversion that can work as the Chelonia IV levels from Jazz Jackrabbit GBA! As soon as I started work on these, the options started opening up. Most importantly, both tilesets share the same palette entry arrangement, so you can easily mix up the contents of CastUlt and DamnUlt together in MLLE.
Many thanks go to Naser, who also worked on an expanded Castle edit, and sent his efforts over to me to incorporate into CastUlt and put some polish on them. Lots of other, previously released conversions were inspirations, outright incorporated (Loon’s work on Damn done for the Silenced Cathedral was a godsend, thank you), or otherwise nodded towards. See the manual for in-depth credits on who’s owed what, and you’ll definitely want to read it so you don’t miss out on many differences between the various versions. Most of the j2ts are not just palette swaps! (And you can still mix-and-match layouts with palettes with minimal data load using the contents of the Palettes folder.)
To make proper use of all the stuff included here, like the png image assets, the Castle spiral slides, the GBA gargoyle platforms, lava, all this stuff… Yeah, get used to it, JJ2+ and its AngelScript implementation are a must. And once again, the example levels are an excerpt from Demon Dash episode 1, and they definitely require JJ2+. Like in JungUlt, all the story is left intact, but these are levels 2 & 3 of the episode, so they’re much easier to just jump straight in! (And even if you’re confused, check out the newly-introduced JJ2+ Help option in the pause menu, which has some extra stuff in these levels!)
You might notice that only Castle example levels are included. The Damn level will be uploaded separately very soon, since it’s intended to be rated as a level (it’s not a demo, not even single-player). Here in this upload page, please focus on the tilesets, no matter how much effort I’ve put into the levels.
