By the request of many people (especially Gry), I’ve uploaded this level seperately as well as part of Codename: Alliance. This was done so that people would have easy access to this level without having to download a massive 17 MB pack just to find this one level. This should also get this level better noticed, as it is in my opinion my best work yet. This is pretty much the same as the Alliance version, however with a few minor fixes.
Enjoy!
EDIT: Semi-major update. Based upon player reactions and my own experiences, I’ve decided to make a few modifications. Most of them are relatively small, though the important change is the reduction in the amount of Seeker ammo available. There has been an adjustment to the Seeker PU position (you now have to shoot it with EB to get it), and a significant increase to its spawn time(it now takes one minute to spawn). Less Seeker spamming should mean better gameplay, as far as I and many others are concerned. If you’ve downloaded the original, I urge you to redownload and play this updated version.
EDIT 2: Apparently a spring below the Full NRG got moved by accident to the wrong location – that’s been fixed. Also, a minor modification to the Seeker PU location has been made.
EDIT 3: After playing the level again in a 3vs3, I’ve concluded that the Seeker PU is completely unhealthy for the level, even given its long spawn time. Thus, I have replaced it with an RF PU.
EDIT 4: Fixed a minor bug that SJ pointed out to me.
EDIT 5: Since the original version continues to be more popular than the v2 update, I’ve decided to include the old version in the zip once again, except with some of the minor gameplay and EC improvements that were made in v2.
EDIT 6: Made the backgrounds in both versions more compatible with 800×600 resolution. Reduced the spawn time on the RF PU in v2.
This level is old, but gold. It already is a pain in the ass to create a decent map out of tileset but man you did it! This map suits 3v3’s and upwards. A duel or 2v2 would take quite some time but still works perfect. Download? Yea, you’d better download this oldie!
Introduction
This level, City of the Sn00zE, has already been uploaded but that was in Codename: Alliance, a pack of 17 levels. Due to popular request Purplejazz uploaded it as a separate level, so the level could possibly get more attention. This level deserves a good review, as I’ve played it several times now and now that it’s uploaded as a separate level I finally get the chance to do it. So beware.
Layout
The level is semi-symmetrical, and has a few big platforms and lots of small platforms (roofs) and one ways. It also has several warps and secret passages. I think that the layout is pretty easy to learn, even when it’s not entirely symmetrical. The underground (aka the |U|||||||n|||||||D|||||||e|||||||R|||||||g|||||||R|||||||o|||||||U|||||||n|||||||D) is a bit darker than the upper area of the level. One of the bases is placed at the l33test position ever (13,37) I feel special because I was the first one who found out that it was placed at that position (except PJ himself who placed it there intentionally)
Gameplay
Like I said, there are lots of one ways and warps and there are also some vines. The flow is alright. You have to jump a lot but that’s probably the tileset’s fault (because it’s a pain to use) The balance seems okay. No red or blue bias like in some popular levels. And yay for all those textstrings that are hard to find (one is in the wall so if you find that without looking in JCS you’re cheating. Yes, I looked in JCS because I couldn’t find all of them.)
Eye candy and theme
For the given tileset, the eye candy is really good (GUD AND STRONG) Really, if anyone uses this set without making lots of tilebugs or boring eye candy that person is a winner (Snooze already did it with Persona Lity) Almost all eye candy is in layer 4, except some tiles that were needed to make things tile (now that was a weird sentence.) There’s enough eye candy in the walls too. The background is pretty (and I <3 the fade colour) The theme seems to be some sort of city where the Sn00zE lives (so BEEHAIV OR U GETT VOTB) and the music fits, as it sounds pretty happy.
Placement of stuff
This is a level with 3 Power-Ups (actually 4, but 3 different ones) and 3 carrots. The 2 Bouncy Power-Ups are at the top left and top right. The Toaster Power-Up is in the middle (sort of at the top, but under the platform between the two Bouncy Power-Ups) The Seek Power-Up is in the UnDeRgRoUnD (it looks like it’s closer to the red base though) There are 2 +1 carrots. One near each base. The Full NRG is in the middle, although it seems a bit closer to the blue base. I guess that still makes it balanced.. however, the only Gun9 ammo seems closer to the red base too. Not that it matters much though. The other ammo placement seems alright. There are no fast fires in this level, which seems good.
Further comments
This level, called City of the Sn00zE, has potential to become popular. And I think it already is, because people often suggest to play it. If you didn’t get Alliance yet (although I doubt it with more than 20000 downloads) then download this. Even when you already downloaded it I recommend to download this as it will make ur head asploed. I also recommend to host this. It’s good for team games, but even duels work well although it might take long. I give this a 9.7! No, just kidding. I give this an 8.4 and like I said, I also give this a download recommendation.
City of the Snooze… I’ve seen this a few times. Now, also on behalf of the Review Exchange, I’ll review it.
Gameplay: Good
City of the Sn00zE is the kind of level that you could see in all kinds of places; JDC, tournaments, etc. I can see how lots of people could like this level.
The level is non-symmetrical. In some cases, this could disrupt the balance of the teams. For example, the shortest route from blue to red base could take you a little more than four seconds and requires you to jump once (from base, jump up, run into the warp and land on the base). The Red Base has a warp closeby the base as well, but it’s right below it. Blue only has to hold right and celebrate (sounds like a Sonic game), while right has to make a timed, perfect drop into the warp if they don’t wanna lose speed on the way to base. The Full NRG carrot is also more accessible when you approach from the left, rather than the right (you can jump into it without losing speed from the left, but right-siders will have to slow down).
The carrots in this level are all accessible with ease. The two +1 Carrots in the level, near the bases, are behind a barrel, but when coming from above, they’re hard to miss. The Full NRG carrot can be found in the middle of the level. As said before, it’s kind of under a ledge, so coming from the right, it’s easy to miss. Then again, if you know that it is there, a simple press on the down button can get you +2HP. ;)
The level is divided in two “routes”. One of those is the Underground. Down here, there are warps up and the famed Seeker PU. Also, running down here could give you an advantage, as it is not littered with obstacles. The upper route (or actually just everything except the underground) consists of roof-platforms and little tunnels, routes and balconies, all waiting to be walked. For a non-symmetrical level, the platforms are divided in a really nice way and there are only few points that disrupt the flow (i.e. by bumping into the edge of a platform, forcing you to a sudden halt).
The level is cramped with ammunition for all kinds of guns. Separate from the Bouncer PU above each base, the upper floors also provide a Toaster PU and the Seeker PU, as mentioned before, rests in the underground. The ammo is divided nicely, and there is not too much either.
This level would be perfect for a 3vs3 or more. Maybe a 2vs2 would work, but the amount of ammo and carrots make for a larger, team based game.
Atmosphere: very scary how make you it Very nice
City of the Sn00zE uses the infamous “Colonius” tileset. The set itself has a few tiles missing and a lot of masking errors. Luckily for us (and PJ), Paul fixed those errors and created an improved version of Colon2.
Given the fact that this set is a pain to work with, we can safely assume that PJ is an experienced level builder. I could not find any tile bugs at all. Not only that, but PJ manages to use almost every tile of the tileset in order to create some very creative eyecandy. For example, the tileset contains an ‘arc’ at the top of it. Most people just use that because it looks nice, but City of the Sn00zE shows us that those can be used more creatively that one could imagine.
The eyecandy in general is nice. There are VERY few ‘bland’ areas, most of the level is carefully looked after.
The music is all right. It’s a bit too spacey for this level, if you ask me, but then again, it IS kind of serene and does fit an alley-ish setting. Combined with the yellow-into-purple fade on the background, this actually gives a calming feel in the end.
Overall: Good
As PJ stated himself, this is probably his best work as of yet. There is no reason why this level shouldn’t be in your folder.
Download Recommendation: Yes
Yes. Simply yes.
