Internet access and sound - Help for an absolute PC n00b plz
The title says it all.. I have a couple of problems that need to be solved, partially to make me able to play JJ2 fully.
Yes, I finally got Windows fully running on the same computer as my Linux ( MEPIS ) OS. Well, almost fully. The sound won't work and I don't have internet access on it.. Now, the internet problem has a higher priority for now.. I've apparently successfully gotten the driver for my network card and installed it, then I tried to install the access software of my provider's ( Versatel ) and it said that the installation was successful ( however, I don't have the Win98 CD anywhere here, so I had to skip a couple hundred messages telling me that it wants to install something from it.. that was supposedly only about installing Internet Explorer Service Pack 6, though ). But after the restart, when I open the access application on my desktop, it tells me to choose a "RAS-Device" from a list - which is empty. If I don't select one and try to connect anyways, it says "ERROR_TAPI_CONFIGURATION (740)". Help will be rewarded with hugs of tremendous love.

Can you tell us the make of your soundcard and network card, type of internet connection, the specific meaning of 'provider's' (I'm guessing ISP), your current version of Windows (I'm guessing 98) and also what you mean by 'access application'.

Yeah, the Windows CD is probably necessary for this.
For sound, do you have the device installed and recognized by Windows? (Does it show up in Device Manager?)

Darn. I'm supposed to have it, but have no idea where it is... Thanks, though. Quote:
Provider = ISP indeed. My internet connection is DSL... Windows 98 indeed, too.. My network card is a Realtek RTL8029 (AS) PCI NIC Ethernet card.. And my soundcard... *types "alsaconf" into the terminal* It gives me two results, but I think it's this one.. intel8x0 Intel Corp. 82801BA/BAM AC'97 Audio (rev 01) It also gives me this: legacy Probe legacy ISA (non-PnP) chips , but I think that isn't even a soundcard... I've researched both and got only results which were affiliated with Linux, which leads me to think that I have a problem here... Quote:

If it is your ISP's application, then maybe they have provided you with wrong software or something that's not compatible with your hardware. Read their terms and conditions and their system requirements.

..well, I've tried to install it again - 2 times - with the Win 98 CD. Nothing has changed.
What I find weird is that when I tried installing whatever it wanted to install using the Win 98 CD, it still wouldn't work, although I put in exactly the CD it asked for.... I'll go research things again, I suppose..

Unable to find correct modem at Add RAS Device selection: http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infoce...oublemodem.htm If that doesn't help and the CD doesn't help, then... *runs away* |

Right, for the sound try to find drivers at sites in this order: motherboard maker, chipset maker. One of those two should have the drivers for it.
For the internet, how are things connected (from the phone line in your house to the computer? You say you have an ethernet card, but also have DSL. That would imply you have an external DSL modem through ethernet, in which case you configure the modem with the DSL settings and the computer with just basic networking (TCP/IP bound to your network adapter, with whatever IP address the modem's manual says you should have - might be DHCP). If it's connected in a different way, then please post details. Oh, you will almost certainly need your Win98 CD if you change *any* network settings in Win98. If windows came preinstalled then the files might be on your hard disk, usually in C:\Windows\Options\Cabs (if that folder contains a lot of .CAB files then you've got the install files there). One last thing - there is a differende between Windows 98 and Windows 98 Second Edition. A lot of recent stuff needs Win98 SE to work, and will not work with Win98. It should tell you which version you have on the first page of System in Control Panel. |

Yay, I'm ooooohhhhhh so late in saying this. Yay, being away for so long.
At one time, Microsoft had all the upgrades from Windows 98 to go to Windows 98SE on their site. I believe that they may still be on the Windows 98 page for Windows Update. Most recent LAN devices require Win98SE or Win98 with SE updates. (I don't really know if there's a difference between the two, my ancient PC which got those updates calls itself Win98SE.) |
