I'm new to Jazz Jack Rabbit and i managed to track down a copy for sale in my region but its The holiday hare '98 one. anyway while looking at some of your polls it didn't rate that well do you think its worth buying?

If you're new to Jazz and are interested in him/it as anything more than a quick play, you're best off buying something other than HH98. HH98 has limited internet support (only other HH98 servers) and no level editor... not the best combination for a community game.

Do not buy HH98! Get either 1.20 (which you can later patch to 1.23) or 1.24 (TSF). The two are not completely compatible, but you can play in other servers with these versions by using certain 3rd party tools. Personally I own both versions.

Or 1.21 or 1.22

wow gry there's SUCH a big difference between 1.20, 1.21, and 1.22 that yes he should DEFINATELY NOT get 1.20

How cheap is HH98 in your region?
If you can buy it for really cheap, then I say pick it up since the SP levels in it are pretty good, but if it's above say, 5 us dollars or the equivalent to that, then don't. And you really need to pick up the full version if you want to play online/make levels/give in to everyone else here.

Funny thing is, Epic didn't really understand how to number versions.

Second is a somewhat large change in how things work, but you'd probably have to look for it.
Next is major Bugfix.
Then minor Bugfix

So 1.24 would actually be something around 1.60. (Way higher number due to semi-visible change)

That's just Linux's way of versioning. Other software/manufacturers may use different systems.

Hmm... that's true, but since Linux Kernel (sorry, my mistake) is only on version TWO in FOURTEEN years, and is still being developed, I think they got something right.

Anyways, back on topic, if you live somewhere in Europe, you could probably order TSF in German. You would have to change some settings or replace some files, but it would still work. Plus, you could play online!

And yes, you can probably get 1.23 in German as well.

Jazz is actually pretty sane, compared to some I've seen around. Semagic, as best as I can tell, goes "thousands, hundreds, tens, units". And Windows is weird because of backwards compatability (there's a lot of code that looks like "if major >= 4 and minor >= 2", and so breaks as soon as you realise 5.0).

My personal view is "major, minor, update/patch, build", where "build" increments for each compile, and the rest increment by no more than 1 for each release (e.g. 1.0.0.23, 1.1.0.35, 1.1.1.36, 1.2.0.45, 2.0.0.101). Hence why I now accuse Mozilla of secretly having a marketing department :P
