Request: AB10 Hosting
Hello all,
As you know, Anniversary Bash 10 is fast approaching, and we have Stijn and PJ making a fantastic map pack which is sure to please all ![]() We are now looking for people who may be able to offer their services in helping host this important Jazz event. Despite hosting the last four bashes, I'll need to start by ruling myself out:
Therefore we are looking for someone who could help us out, there's a few basic requirements: Good Location You will need to be located somewhere in Western Europe or North America as ping is an important aspect in network gaming and this is where the fast majority of players are based. Fast Internet Upstream Hosting a game is all about the upstream, you need a lot of it to manage 16 players in your server. Problem is, most Home Internet Providers do not provide upstream in fear of Peer to Peer technology, therefore people will need a good upstream, at least 60kb/sec. A way to test your upstream is at: http://myspeed.visualware.com/ Advanced Knowledge You do not require to be an expert at computers or network, but you will need a good understanding of port forwarding and understanding that running Limeware anywhere on your household connection will ruin the game for everyone! Therefore, either you own the connection or have control over it so you can ensure the bash runs smoothly. The support of J2O The Anniversary Bash has been organized in cooperation with the people at J2O for at least the last five years, and J2O provides all the publicity to users. Its important that whoever hosts it is on friendly terms with J2O staff and the community and seems fit by the administration, especially by FQuist who will work with you to ensure the map packs and server information are on J2O. The following are recommend requirements which aren't required, but are highly recommended and give you a much better chance of being the hoster: A Spare PC Its important for the Bash to be 24/7, and as of course you will need sleep and other requirements, its easier to then allow trusted community members to be able to log in remotely and restart the server incase you are sleeping or out. Installing VNC As above, remote administration is highly recommended, and the use of VNC allows people with a password to log onto the Desktop and restart the server. NOTE: This implies that you open up your computer to access from the trusted users that you or the Jazz2Online staff appoint. If anyone has any serious offers of hosting, please either reply here or talk to Fquist or Nimrod directly. Though you won't get paid for your effort, your have the warm feeling you helped out, and be respected by community members for your efforts ![]() Cheers. If no one else is able to host, there's a ~70% chance or so that I could.
No, my connection doesn't suck anymore. The only potential problem is my router, but I think I have that worked out. |

That sounds great BN, could you test soon?
Also remember that VNC would have to work with the ports, too.

I seem able to host, but VNC doesn't seem to work. I think I've opened the right ports, but just to confirm, what do I need to open?

On the homepage, there's this nice box with huge letters saying the bash is coming. Does that mean ye got a host?

We do not have a dedicated host. Black Ninja has not replied anymore. I have a setup going at home I'd use as semi-dedicated but the router has troubles. I have one possible dedicated host offer and one good offer for usual hosting if we can't get dedicated. Of course, when dedicated options fail, there's probably more people who can host. And we'll certainly need them as backup hosts, since non-dedicated hosting is just much more unreliable.

Sorry for my lack of response.
Due to matters beyond my control, I don't think I'll be able to host (or even join). My ISP seems thoroughly convinced that the ports JJ2 uses are used for torrent downloading, and as a result has blocked them. Yes, sadly I am completely serious. EDIT: There is a small chance that I will be allowed to use a server at my college to host on. Let me know if we are still quite desperate for hosts, and I'll look into that. |

Thanks for your update. One question: have you tried JJ2UDP?

Also, why does it say I'm hosting the Bash on the front page? I was just checking out the levels ;p
EDIT: Oh, wait, nvm. I was just hosting (what was referred to as) a pre-bash server (because I was hosting it for a few good hours today). But that doesn't really mean I'll be hosting the rest of the games for the Bash. I have school to go to and other stuff.

I have the possibility to keep a non-dedicated JJ2 server active and monitored for atleast more than a week. But however, my home internet connection is pretty busy most of the time because of teleplone, Xbox Live, and some other PC's, which makes games laggy if there are more people playing than usual numbers. So I suppose I could be a backup host if there are really no other members who can host stuff at a time..

THE BASH.
There were many other people who hosted unofficial servers during downtimes, when the bash servers were full, and the bash afterparty servers.

Thanks for hosting, doods.
Although I missed 99% of the action. |

Good idea, by starting to find a host now we have approximately 10 months to get one and some backups. One each two months should be enough.

Because people that will pledge to host 10 months in advance are guaranteed to be able to host (or even have the motivation) when the time actually comes.
|
May 18, 2008, 12:03 PM | |
Exactly =) We shouldn't end up without a host again next year, so just find em early.

I don't think the lack of hosts had snything to do with timing, it had more to do with lack of actual hosts.

No, see, I don't think you get it.
There is virtually no way it would make sense if we got servers this early, since by the time the Anniversary Bash rolls around, more likely than not the server volunteer in question will either not have the motivation to do it, or not have the means to do it. Requesting people this early is simply too much foresight. |
May 20, 2008, 06:42 AM | |
Plus by next AB11 there may be a breakthrough with JJ2 Dedicated Servers (like Overlords project) which would make the hosting question different (from home computers to Dedicated Servers).
Its best to look into it all closer to the time, like in 10 months time ![]() |
May 20, 2008, 12:57 PM | |
It's always good to have a back-up plan lying there at least a few weeks early. Rather have 3 hosts that may decide not to host after all while you find out you don't need them, than no hosts at all while it turns out you'll need one
![]() Anyway, let's just see what happens. I hope the dedictated servers finally take their positions on the GiP list.
