Art Battle, Anyone?

Recently I've been doodling and having a bit of fun drawing. So far, I'm not very good, but I think I have been improving. I'd want to keep practicing, but I often find I lose motivation and/or inspiration, so I don't know what to draw or get distracted and end up drawing nothing. So I figured that something more structured, like an art battle, would be nice.

Anyway, there have been a few art battles on JCF before, but I don't think I'm using the same rules, and not everyone may be familiar with them, so here are the basics:

1. If you are interested in participating, post here or PM me. I'd prefer more of an art duel than a full out war, so I only plan on drawing against one, or maybe two other people. I doubt this would be a problem, and it's quite possible that there will be no interest in this at all, but if by some chance twenty people want to join, I think we'd have to break it up into a tournament.

2. How the Game works: Player 1 and 2 choose/make up characters who will duke it out. They may decide on things like a setting, why they're fighting, etc. or they may just make it up as they go. Player 1 then posts a comic of his character meeting up with and/or attacking player 2's character. Player 2 then posts a reply with his character fighting back. Other forum members may vote for who they think wins the round, then the process repeats until the artists get bored, or the fight ends.

3. Other art forms are allowed. If you feel your attack can best be expressed through epic poetry, write the poem and post it here. If you think interpretive dance will be your best shot, go ahead and record a video of yourself dancing.

4. Be on time. After your opponent posts an attack, you have seven days to post a counter-attack. Of course, if you can't make the deadline, it's better late than never. But from looking at old art battles on JCF, it appears many of them died very quickly because someone couldn't find to to draw anything. Also, it can be a bit boring if you have to wait a very long time between posts. Keep this in mind if you decide you want to join the art battle, and don't sign up if your schedule won't allow it.

5. I'm a lousy artist. Please don't expect any masterpieces. That said, I'm trying to improve, and I'd greatly appreciate any usable criticisms. I can't speak for my opponent though, and if s/he doesn't want criticisms, don't give them.

Here are a few potential characters I'm considering. If my opponent really wants me to use one, I'll be happy to oblige, but I'll also decide on my own if not.

This guy's actually pretty poorly developed as a character. I haven't even thought up a name yet. I guess he's somewhat based off a horned owl, with the ear looking feathers. He can do melee, and I could give him a light sword or dagger, although he's primarily a wizard of some sort.

This guy is his arch enemy. He's wearing the skull, it's not actually his head. He also has some magic, but he's much more likely to just hack enemies up with a sword.

I used this character for another art battle, so I'm probably most familiar drawing him. I named him Ivan, and he's much more suited to a modern battle, seeing as he has a pistol, several grenades, and an axe, instead of the more medieval style.

How about a free-for-all? It would mean more random stuff and the ability to withdraw when you don't feel like drawing anymore and disrupting the action...

I'm willing to dust off my Rabbit soldiers and throw back a punch if you zap me.

Sure, a free-for-all would work, if there's enough interest. I just wouldn't want everyone to get excited, introduce a new character, then get bored after one entry, and leave us with a battlefield full of random, inactive characters.

Oh yeah?

Might I introduce to you, Stickman! A powerful twerp. Power of full-body enlargement. Can enlarge himself to the height of his enemy. He appeared on an island after the darkness took over. After infiltrating and defeating spongebob, his mighty wrath continues.

Oh yeah, his weapon of choice is a keyblade (not yet textured, lulz). He also has the power of fire, and ice, they are weak, compared to his power of Lightning which can reek havoc, especially at night. At night his power doubles along with his strength. Beware opponents.

We don't need to render each and every character as the battle goes on. If a character goes inactive, we can simply drop the character (Either with a mortal combat style "FINISH HIM!" or leave that character with a cliffhanger)

Oh yeah. One more thing:

Nice. I started a response to that, and finished the sketching. But I tried scanning it in, then just playing with levels to get the line art, which seemed a lot faster. But it looks like it's going to require at least as much work to clean up the lines now, as it would have to just retrace them in GIMP like I did for my other pictures in this thread. Anyway, you can expect an attack from me within the next few days.

Uh-oh. It seems like I may be in danger. But what scares me more than the gun is the fact that my character's pants seem to have disappeared.

Don't worry about it. I definitely took some liberties with the rabbit soldier's appearance too.

Sorry, I had a couple tests yesterday and a physics lab to write for today. But I did start drawing up my response (twice actually, once on paper and once in inkscape. I may try making my next entry entirely digitally.) Over the weekend I should have plenty of time, and my response will hopefully be up before the 7 day limit after your post.

I'll give it to you, You found a unique way out of that! (I was kinda worried I went a little overboard there)

I'll need to think on how I'll get out of this!

Yeah, I thought just rolling over and dodging the bullets was too obvious. Although this also definitely makes my character a bit overpowered, so I was hesitant about it.

But I figured you can, if you want, pull out a whole army, so I decided to do it anyway.

Couldn't do any "art" work, but I did write my next attack:

Eric Dowsin pulled at the earth that had risen to grab his feet. He did not know what this adversary was doing, but he did not like it. Some supernatural force held the dirt together and resisted his efforts to pull free.
He pointed his rifle at the ground between his feet and fired a few times. This only resulted in a evil laugh from the ground and the ground to start pulling. Eric suppressed a pang of panic as he started to sink into the ground.

His mind screamed as what to do. “(-)(-)(-)(-)(-)(-) Eric. Think. THINK!”

A thought turned into an idea. It argued against logic, but he was desperate enough to try it. He reached and pulled a grenade from his belt. He took a look at it. His mind was a little surprised that “THERMITE” was written in stencilled letters on the canister. “I hope this one will work, I can’t waste another second” he thought as he pulled the pin, squeezed the lever to ignite the fuse, and with a gentle toss, placed the grenade where the creature sank into the ground.

The thermite ignited with a blinding glow as the chemical reaction generated molten steel. Several tense seconds went by as the ground absorbed all the heat from the iron, then an echoing yell resonated inside the earth as Eric felt the ground loosen and fall back to its natural state.

He pulled himself out of the waist-deep hole and was reloading his rifle when the creature burst out of the ground, his fur burned away from where the ground got hot.

“I guess you control the ground if it’s a nice cool temperature, huh?” Eric snarled at the creature as it charged, but Eric turned slightly, reared and thrust his rife backwards to catch the creature’s face with the rifle butt.

“Command, I can only hold this guy off for so long!” He yelled in his mic as the creature summoned his sword and swung it in a running charge, which Eric barely sidestepped.

“Strike team has been mobilized and will be there shortly, sergeant. Hang in there!” His headset squawked. Eric ducked another swing from the sword and ran past the creature, drawing back the bolt on his rifle.

Whirling around, he took rapid aim and squeezed the trigger.

The thermite is a nice touch. I'm on spring break at the moment, so I should have plenty of free time to work on my reply, and hopefully I can have it posted within a couple days.

I seriously underestimated how long it takes me to draw things, so I figured it would be a good idea to try to make a longer reply this time. However, I think if I actually took the time to color and shade this, it wouldn't be up for quite some time. Oh well, live and learn I guess.

I realize that I'm making pretty much the number one villain mistake here, and not killing off someone when I have the chance. And now I'm probably going to have to fight against both an army, and Sargent Dowsin, who will eventually wake up in the catacombs, which I'm imagining as some kind of underground lair my guy lives in. Although I haven't officially drawn them or described them in the story so I guess you could make them something else if you wanted.

Revenge is a dish best served En Flambé.

This post is probably a bit late. Sorry about that. Also, I suppose this would have had to happen before Dermo's post, and if you guys think posting out of chronological order should be against the rules, I guess this won't count. I started planning it before I saw his update, and I didn't want to trash what I had done (and stickman's leg looks a bit disconnected anyway in the last panel)
