Last week, I posted the results of a photography meme in my Livejournal. The meme was a simple one: people comment with 3 things for me to take pictures of, and I go out and take the photos. The only downside is the latter half requires effort, and so the list of photos sat on my computer for a couple of years before I finally got round to making the post.

Anyway, I've seen that other people here have made their own art threads, so I thought I'd join in and create my own thread. Click on a thumbnail to go to my gallery and view the full-size version. By the way, the format of the titles in this section is "name of commenter" "item photographed".

Constructive criticism and comments welcome.


Pleaseremove's woodlouse

Strange as it may seem, I don't think I've got a photo of a woodlouse in my collection. So instead I shall give you a photo that may contain a woodlouse. It definetely contains snails.

Taken next to a sitting stone just north of Hove, while out geocaching with Ric a couple of years ago. The stone is locally known as Rest and be Thankful

I keep meaning to do a more substantial update at some point. As always, criticism welcome.

I think some of these pictures are rather good. I took the liberty of flicking through the other pictures on the website. The ladders of Jacobs one is by far my favorit because of the colours and the contrast between light and dark.

If there is one tip I can give you however it is to try and shoot a few pictures from different angles, not just from the front. It may give very different results.

This one? That was taken from a train, on my way back from a visit to Battle Abbey. Completely unplanned - I glanced out the window, saw the Jacob's Ladders, and then quickly dug my camera out before they went.

Thanks for the tip, I'll give it a try next time I'm out with the camera.

These photos are from my holiday in Falmouth earlier this year. I stayed at Pendennis Castle - yes, really! The Custodian's House is inside the castle grounds.

Operation Chariot

From this harbour 622 sailors and commandos set sail for the successful raid on St. Nazaire 28th March 1942. 168 were killed. 5 Victoria Crosses were awarded.

It was a rather damp holiday, with the second day alternating between glorious sunshine and heavy downpours. This was taken during a short gap in the rain.

The new Maritime Museum

The new Maritime Museum. Last time I was in Falmouth, the museum was a curious odd thing hidden behind the high street, jammed full of nautical history and exhibits. A few years ago they moved to a new development on the seafront.

Sailing boats

These small model boats actually sail! The vents on the right blow across the surface of the water, and you remotely control the rudder and tightening/loosening the sail.

Reversible canoe

This curious canoe is designed to sail in both directions. You sail with the outrigger downwind, and to tack you shift the sail from one end of the boat to the other and start travelling in the opposite direction. A normal boat always has the bow at the front - this one has two bows and no stern!

St Mawes Castle

A rather washed-out photo of St Mawes castle (I blame the camera, this was taken on full auto). Unfortuantly the castle was open friday to monday, and this was wednesday.

Evening coast

There's something about the wonderful reddish-gold colour you get in the evening.

Eden

The giant biomes of the Eden Project. The Project itself is built in a disued quarry. The central set of hexagonal panels forms the Rainforest biome, with the Mediterrain biome to the right. In the lower-right area is WEEE Man, a figure constructed out of all the electrical equipment an average person will throw away in their lifetime.

Mediterranean biome

Inside the Mediterranean biome. The birds in here were amazingly tame, and will eat out of your hand.

Rainforest biome

Entering the rainforest biome (cue Crystal Maze theme). The humidity and temperature in here was such that the water vapour was condensing on the lens of my camera.

Waterfall

Up high at the back of the biome was a waterfall feeding a stream. The bridge just in front of this is a very nice place to stand – you can feel the spray from the waterfall and it does a great job at cooling you down.

Hollingdean hill

One of my regrets from my time at university: I lived only a few minutes from here for two years, and never once did I venture up here. This was taken about a year and a half after I moved away - I came back to visit some friends, and Craig recommended this walk.

While out walking one day I came across this tree, chained down presumably to stop it snaring passing travellers. If you look closely, you'll spot that the chain is broken...

It's hard to take a photo of mist - it's so insubstantial, and appears washed out.

Recently the UK was turned white by an unusually large amount of snow. Now, *any* snow south of London snarls up all transport, but this was special, and lasted for over a week. This photo was taken on the night the snow first fell.

The latest photos are nice. I like the "Twilight Path", it looks rather spooky, "Growing Boats" looks so awesomely abstract with the boats there, "Snow"'s grayscale looks good, too. "Hollingdean Hill" is awesomely calming and ambient. As for the technical side of your photos I can't say much as I am not an expert on photography, but I see nothing wrong with them.

Where I live in England it's rare to get any real amount of snow. And it's exceptionally rare to get enough snow to cause transport problems. And it's unspeakably rare to get it at this time of the year.

Heh, I should start posting pictures of how much snow we've got. The snow in England is nothing compared to the amount we get in the highlands of Scotland like last year. The snow here is near to getting up to my knees...

I actually saw, and had a chance, to go through snow what was approximately 80cm high. This is nothing in comparation with that. But I like your pictures. Didn't see snow very long time.

A lot of it is due to location. In England, especially where I live (right on the south coast) real snowfall is rare. As a result, no-one bothers investing in things like winter tyres and snow chains, and while the council has lots of gritters they're mainly required for dealing with ice (icy roads are a serious problem here each winter).

To give an example, the snowfall back in January was much more than that in previous years. Winter '07-'08 and '08-'09 each had about a day when there was actual on-the-ground snow, and that was gone by the next day. In fact the snow in those photos had all disappeared by this morning.

It's a whole different situation in Scotland. Up there you regularly gets lots of snow and so the country as a whole is geared to coping with it. Down in the south it's simply not worth it.

well, that explains everything. I really like snow . Treya, can you take some photos when the snow becomes very big? I'll take one soon I hope.
