LMAT: Beyonduary: Phase 2: Concept Brainstorm
After some democracy, too much bureaucracy, a little socialism, a bit of a dictatorship and one big "OK NEXT POSTER WINS," we have decided upon a theme for the next LMAT!
Since Phase One (decide what we are making) is done, we can now move on to Phase Two: Quote:
(See what I did there? It is a pun, or wordplay, wherein I used a phrase which contained the word "Sky" when referring to this tileset, which is now related to the sky in every possible way! It is funny because it is a phrase which fits the surrounding context in more than one way! The only possible way this could get any funnier is if I over-explained the joke! Does explaining the fact that over-explaining the joke make it even funnier? Recursive meta-jokes seem to have diminishing returns, so I think I'll stop now.)

I know double-posting is frowned upon, but I'd rather post my ideas for a spaceport in a reply, and leave the first post for the "rules" such as they are...
Anyways, some ideas to get us started:
Um, that's all I got at the moment, can't wait to see what the rest of you come up with.

I have an idea!

Generally, I think the tileset should be divided into interior and exterior portions. Interior would be all the grand halls, receptions, luggage recievement (conveyor belts!!), maybe stuff like offices or security rooms. Exterior stuff would be all the hangars, landing pods, metal grids, all the many spaceships and command towers. Also, for the hangar I'm imagining some interior could also be done, what with a background with rocket spaceships all lined up, ready to be transported to a launch pad for blast off. Generally I'm thinking anything regarding the spaceships themselves should be HUGE - but then, I fear we might run out of space in the tileset... unless we're either tricky or decide to make it TSF, which I believe many would not like (although I'm personally anti-tileset-conservatism). Lastly, I was thinking of some cool rocky desert backdrop for layers 6-7 or maybe just 7 (kinda like in the beginning of Egg Rocket Zone in Sonic Advance 1).

If we do go with a space theme, we could throw in some upside-down furniture and sprites, or something, because there is no real "up" in a place without gravity. Then maybe have some fun with warps and text that reads "Now reversing artificial gravity" or something.

If you want to have a zero gravity area, the best thing to do is just force the player to use an airboard. This could be a good idea for "outside" areas. |

Come up with a motif and focus on compartments, sectors, and interconnected aspects in general. Since this is a space port, the motif should reflect a very solid, clean and advanced look opposed to something dreary. Probably a good idea to work with lighting a lot with this theme.
Also, DoubleGJ's ideas are good. |

Basically just improve on Odyssey?

No offense to the tileset nor its author, but Odyssey doesn't look like anything except that it's metal and in space

Hm, I sort of preferred the elemental temple thing, but anyway! A few suggestions:
A.)Customisable spaceships? I mean, so you can mix'n'match however you like, though that might be a bit off the main concept. B.)Shops. What big airport doesn't have shops? C.)Lots of conveyor belts. D.)Something unique for a background. Personally I think that there must be something better than just stars and planets in a space tileset. Not sure what, but something that looks good. I'll probably think of something better later.

This "LET'S PLAN EVERYTHING BEFORE" stuff is useless. Anyone who got some ideas will execute them when drawing. It will take a couple of years this way. The first post of this LMAT showed up on January 3rd. Over 4 months of planning and it wasn't even started.
Btw: Elemental Temple (Air/Lava/Deep Sea/Ice) is winning now. I think this should be drawn, just because jj2 has already many space-themed tilesets. |

We could draw an elemental airport?

Whatever you do, don't let it die before we started. I'm really going to help with any tileset (space temple sounds great, but anyway the spaceport/airport won), just begin to make it please.

...blarghel. I wanted to go ahead and make a suggestion, but I'd rather make that tileset myself. Ok, go ahead and make your space temple or whatever, but I'm not going to lead this thing anymore if you do. *drops the reigns* Go for it!

Okay, I apologize for all this. My fault this has been going nowhere for so long. I think the planning structure as I laid it out could work, in principle, but it needs much more attention and administration than I was willing to give it, and I should have acknowledged that a long time ago and done something about it. So let's move on.
Anyhow, I think we've got some good ideas and pictures on the space/spaceport/spaceship side (ambiguous gravity stuff in particular intrigues me, furniture and whatnot hanging from the ceiling, even if the gameplay itself wouldn't have to go upside-down; on the other hand, I am hesitant about making the set too purple, lest it greatly resemble Aftermath) and I imagine we all have a good sense of what appears in the generic prototemple. Let's let the market decide what works out and what doesn't. I'll cut to the chase and start the actual drawing thread later today or your money back, although if people want to continue using this thread for concept discussion, keeping it separate from the actual drawing, then that's fine. But yeah. Later today. |

I think we're not yet ready to draw this tileset. We should return to this thread and post how a space temple should look like in our opinion, because as we have seen, our visions of it vary damn much. My own is something similar to "Laputa: Castle in the Sky" (search Google or look at the image in the other thread), but more like "LMAT: Temple in the Space", so stars in the background and a temple in exchange of the castle.
Does someone else have any other ideas?

Seeing as this isn't actually tiles I figured I'd plonk it in here
![]() Lamp eyecandy, the only thing I could come up with so far -_- Colors suggested are just to fit the recent tiles UR posted. They can be changed around if we change the color "theme". Hopefully I'll come up with something better and more extensive than just lamps -_-

They're quite cool. What do you think about an animation of them, like:
Front-Left side-Back-Right side probably with some more frames between them? I mean, would making them rotate destroy your vision or can I try?

Well, I didn't really picture them rotating, it was just for reference if someone liked them, but you can certainly go ahead and give it a shot. It'd be something kinda different at least.
