Science Fair
Ok, URJazz and I are having a science fair. You have to come up with some new JJ2 trick that isn't already publically known (you know... like wallclimbing, only new). In essence, it's that simple.
Guidelines for entries: You can submit pretty much anything, really, though obviously unrelated stuff won't win. Quirks are ok, so you can submit something showing how turtle shells bounce off moths, but we prefer for your project to have a use. Try to make your gadget compact. Size will sometimes be an issue, so if it takes up 20x16 tiles, it won't be incredibly practical. Include both a text file explaining what your project is, how it works, and what it does, and an example level showing it in action. The example level does not have to have good eyecandy, as long as it works. For the example level, use Top Secret 3, unless you need a masking (such as a hook at just the right height) not in it. In that case, use some tileset it will work with, and include it in the .zip file. DO NOT INCLUDE MUSIC. No adult or illegal files. The judges' decision are final. We do not take threats, bribes, or insults. Send entries (only one per person, teams allowed) to either Violet or Jazz , with the subject "JJ2: Science Fair". An example entry can be downloaded by clicking on this link. (Global Trigger Zone) The winner will recieve their choice of JJ1 tileset converted (by me), with their rabbit in it. They can also beta test it. Also they get the pride of having won. The runner up (if any) will also be able to beta test it if they wish. And the pride of having almost won. All entries must be submitted before the 11th of June (one month). Questions? Concerns? Witty remarks? Post them here, and we'll do our best to |

No. If you somehow discover two undiscovered and useful things, we still don't let you submit them both. Choose one.

I suppose not, Magoo. For example, if you have refined the process of drifting to a point where it is regularly possible and moderately useful, you are free to submit that.

May I use one of the many tecniques which I have come up with, which despite the fact that they ARE known to some, are otherwise relatively unknown?
Or do I have to spend my time comming up with some new thing?

I think that'd be okay. Anyway, I was gonna do a project on how your framerate differs due to the effects of weapons and other effects, but my computer is so fast it's all most all ways a constant 60 FPS. The lowest I've ever gotten is 51, when I made a really advanced paralaxing background with high colors, put on the god mode effects, flew around fast in a 512x256 level, and shot the toaster with fast fire on. That should do the trick, huh? :-p

Coming up with something new would be best.

I really would enter something, but it is difficult to think of something new and creative under a deadline. I, personally, get my best ideas (not that they are very good, but still my best) when I am not even remotely trying to think of them.
That and the fact that I am not creative or talented, too. ~ Traft |

Lots of people are the same way as Trafton, but I guess the rules have already been set and the deadline as well...
Why hasn't this been announced on J2O?

Update: Two entries now!
Wait until June 5th or so, Jazz. If there aren't any more then, the deadline might be extended, but it's a bit early as of yet. |

Update
Ok, there are currently four entries. No official decision has been made on which is the best. However, four is not the largest number, so the deadline has been extended to June 18th. Get those creative processes running.

The winner. It's you.
The Science Fair is over, and here we have some results! In no paticular order. If you want more information about how anything here works, ask the author.
"Clipping Project" by Xion: This charming little thing demonstrates that if you run with bouncy, it will go through walls. Not only that, but once it goes through walls, it can destroy things. NOT A WINNER. "Infinity Glitch" by GenEX: This is more interesting. It shows that if your layer 4 is small enough, and has no tiles in it, you can set a "Tile Width" or "Tile Height" without getting an access violation. In addition, it places lots of random events all over the level. NOT A WINNER. "Jazz vs. Spaz" by Firesword and CelL: I don't know how much about this level should be publically revealed, but I will say basically what it seems to be showing is that if you stomp a morph, you will change character. NOT A WINNER. "Hugela's Science fair" by... Hugela: Hugela does not seem to understand the meaning of "one entry". The submitted level is filled with different things, ranging from dieing on a CTF base to a flying horizontal spring. However, none of the new stuff is paticularly useful, and Hugela didn't seem to follow the rules, so this is NOT A WINNER. "Siencfair-Pyromanus" by Pyromanus: Pyro also submitted more then one thing, but we decided the first one doesn't count, as it basically shows what an event does. As for the rest, he has submitted a way to create enemies in multiplayer. Sound good? Sadly, they behave like SCEs: They give you an error in anything other then Treasure Hunt, where they do no more then bullets. Admittedly this could make for an interesting treasure hunt, where, say, you try to get to the exit with the required number of gems, but still, it's a bit annoying, and Pyro didn't seem to mention the errors. NOT A WINNER. "Project Hog" by N0B0DY: "Hog" is actually "Fog". Using a combination of lighting effects, this shows how to put your level in a fog, or only a select part of it. This is a nice eyecandy effect, and in the long example level, you can see many uses for it. Very nice for forest levels and stuff. RUNNER UP. "The Triggerless Jail 2 Concept" by BlurredD: Basically, BlurredD shows how to create the Jail2 concept (used in Team Battle, Jailbreak, and various other things) without using triggers. It can also be used for other various things we won't tell you about. It was a hard decision between this and Project Hog, but this has been selected as THE WINNER. Choose a planet. Thank you all for taking part. If we forgot about you, oops. |
Jun 19, 2003, 04:33 PM | |
Good job everyone. I couldn't enter since I couldn't come up with anything new, but Yay for BlurredD!

As far as I know, we do not have permission to publically distribute any of these levels. Go ask the authors.

Yeah. That would be cool, and it might help level designers...

Hey
I'm quite sad my entry was not good enough but i can understand why it wasn't good enough it indeed gives errors when the host get's killed by the enemies. I didn't know that the event i gave was known. It's one event that turns the whole level in a not perfect no-fire zone at some moments you can see bullets flying. but they don't hurt you don't lose hearts being hit by the bullets Well i uploaded the entries to my local webspace My Entry
