How you use it:

step 1)
type "mount c " (without the quotes)

step 2) type jazz.exe

step 3) let it load

step 4) Welcome to JJ1! Control F8 increases frameskip, Control F7 decreases frameskip, Control F12 increases CPU speed, Control F11 decreases CPU speed. The ideal game speed for JJ1 is a CPU speed of 4000 to 5000 and a frameskip of 1 or 2.

I think this has been known for quite a while now. And it's not really interesting as DosBox is really slow. And because you can run JJ1 from within the Windows command prompt if you use turbo pascal patch, which is a lot faster. (download it at haze's site)

You must tweak the CPU and Frameskip until you find what's right for your PC

Why bother if you can fix it with a tiny program.
I know people who have problems running DosBox even on a 2ghz machine.

There are a few advantages to Dosbox:

- You can run the game windowed, good for tileset conversion and more convenient
- It may be slow, but you can typically make it faster.
- You won't need to use tppatch
- Because you won't need tppatch, the sound should still work

Besides that, the program is like any other emulator and isn't too reliable. I prefer running in regularly through XP, but it's still a nice program. It's definetly old news though.

Indeed, I've found it useful and the default settings worked for me. You can take pictures, save sound files, run in full screen and there are other interesting features too.

The sound actually works this time?

I like the "Sign on to There" thing. What does it do?

Ok, seriously, considering the number of people who play JJ1 on XP, I'm not sure this topic is really needed. Something like "You can use DosBox (http://your.url.here) to play JJ1 in XP" as a Did You Know might be more practical, if anyone still remembers how to update the Did You Knows.

Or, you can do what I do, and use VDMSound. It lets you run Jazz1 in the XP command prompt with sound, USB joystick support, and no need for patching. You just need to set up Jazz1's soundcard settings to match the ones that you set up in VDMSound.

Or you can use an old computer using Windows 98 to run it.

Well, nice that you discovered this (I didn't know it yet, fyi). I might try it out one day.

Not exactly new. I've been playing JJ1 like that for a while now because its the only way I could play it. Works on Win2k too, btw.

Wows, this reminds me of when I rediscovered Jazz Jackrabbit.

Quite some time ago, I was over at a friend's house. He had a Windows 98 (or 95, forget which one) computer, and there were some game demoes that came with his Gravis Gamepad, most were from Epic Megagames. My friend installed the Jazz 1 demo. Once we played it, it was so cool. It was as though I couldn't get enough if it, but alas... it was only a demo.

Now, in early 2004, I was browsing GameHippo and to my surprise, they had a piece of shareware (Which is against their motto). It was Jazz Jackrabbit Holiday Hare '94! The game suddenly came back to me! I was eager to try the game again. I downloaded it onto my XP computer (My 98 computer is trashed up enough), but it wouldn't run. I tried VDMSound on the game (I don't have the full version. ) on my XP computer. Everything worked except for the sound and music, which I couldn't hear at all. Some sprites also flickered (Eg. the Devan sign masking the Jazz sign) and jittered a bit.

I used to have a Windows 98 laptop that WORKED. I used it to play the game with sound and everything. However, the music was kinda staticy and sprites still flickered and jittered a bit (But not as much as my XP machine). Then, after having so many problems, my laptop's HD just crashed on me. It could no longer load Windows, and I had to run stuff from DOS. I also couldn't run Jazz, because it said there were missing files. However, the laptop crashed a while ago, and now that's a part of history.

The reason I bought Jazz 2 (And not Jazz 1) was because it was a game that:

1. Ran perfectly under Windows XP, with sound and everything.

2. You could create levels.

3. You could play over the internet.

Now I know these games are getting real old, but I just had the urge to buy a Jazz Jackrabbit game. After buying Jazz 2, I was rather surprised to find a community still active, even after 6 years of JJ2's release.

Eh, it seems like many have unblocked. Don't expect me to man, I keep forgetting to delete you from the list anyway. Lol and don't think that I care about eh your cousin or anything, that you. It's all like a dream, whee.

I just have my computer set up with both Windows 98 and Windows XP.... my Sound Blaster Live card has DOS drivers... so a lot of you people are screwed even if you get it to work on your modern computers.... typically the new hardware vendors don't make DOS drivers anymore....

one last thing: TPPATCH does not disable the sound... Windows XP/2k just doesn't enable it.

TPPATCH is the best solution... emulating DOS on a PC is retarded unless you use linux.
