JJ1 graphics

This isn't a Jazz 2 post, but nonetheless relates to Jazz Jackrabbit.

I got my hands on some decompression code for Jazz 1, from [hotmail's down so I can't get the name of the guy ]which only worked on the tilesets, and I extended it a little bit and have managed to drag this out of cheat.0sc:

which is good news for all lovers of Jazz 1. And hey, you never know, there might be some unused images or something very nice hiding inside the files

The compression used in Jazz 2 is completely different, I believe, but slowly slowly catchee monkey.

In case you're familiar with my Wombat Game Tools program, the version that's curerntly up only supports the planet.xxx images, so you won't be able to look at the tilesets yet.

It was Ice M A N's code. Nice to see you found your way to the forums by the way!

That image is indeed great. I don't think it was used in the game. So I guess this might be the first time in ten years time, people other than the games' creators have actually seen it.

That's pretty cool, you might be interested in the level building application that people from this community made for JJ1 levels called J1CS, it's fun to play with. http://www.jazz2online.com/J2Ov2/dow...p?levelID=2534

Sorry to burst your bubble, guys, that image *was* used in the game. It appears before the cinematics when you finish the episode, and have used a cheat in the process (the exception is the level skipping code on the Guardian level). So it's no "hidden treasure" at all. Try hacking one of the Sonic games, they're loaded with excess data

Yes.. RLE compressesion is used on a crapload of the file formats, though not exclusively..

Also, the code you have is slightly buggy (the "kludgey" bit was fixed year(s?) ago).. at the end of an RLE block, regardless of if it's a copying run or a literal run, it ends in 0x00 then the last byte, and the other 2 bytes skipped by the kludge are the compressed site bytes of the following RLE block.. or so I think. It's been a LONG time since I looked at it. (Right now it skips these 4 bytes and outputes a duplicate of the 2nd last byte IIRC)

Glad someone can make some use out of it... I didn't find it would be really worth the time to show things like that off, but more power to ya..

Oh.. and that level making program is due for a complete rewrite. Insanely buggy and difficult to understand/use.. And I've still never finished my JJ1 tileset compiler. I used to have one which worked with very particular raw images, but I've since lost it and never had the time to rewrite it (let alone work with many image formats, or whatever)

Try modding a command and conquer game, westwood is too lazy to remove elements of previous games from their mix files!

Anyone try extracting the "What are you doing up here?" tiles yet?

Err... yeah. It's part of the Turtemple tileset. You can see it using J1CS.

Hey, szevvy. Looks like JJ1 is quickly crumbling down one step at a time.
