A simple little arcade-y game

Once there was a game, so classic and timely it was considered innovative, and a "must have"
This isn't that game. That game is over here
This game was a 10mb bandwith eater and overkill to 56k'ers, but now there is the Director's Cut edition, that cuts the size down to 2.63 mb!
The game is called Medivo Arcade,(click to download) and has an 8-bit(read: crappy) look and arcadey (read: repetive and button mashy) gameplay!
Now fully equipped with a menu screen that plays instructions for you, there is no better time to download this game. Scoring information can be brought up by pressing F1 since it flashes by too quickly in the Menu screen.

Also avalible is a lite version(click to download), which is only 1.07 mb, made speficially with those stuck in Traffic on the Internet Super Highway(read: has 56k) in mind. This package is only the core game, without the meddling music and menu. All instructions can be brought up via F1 key in the lite version.

See, this is why people need to start using TGF or MMF. It's superior, doesn't corrupt, and the files are pretty small.

Gah, 10 MB? You need to learn how to condense your games. I mirrored it anyway, but seriously, man. Crop that music file down a bit. I can't last more than like 20 seconds in there anyway. I doubt your GM6 files are actually corrupted, you probably just can't open them because you have a nine megabyte sound file stored internally.

Other than that, you actually captured that arcadey feel quite well. But I think it needs an "INSERT MONEY" screen before it starts.

Updated first post with a massive rewrite of the engine, which now has a menu and smaller music files.
Also, a lite version can be downloaded.
The Director's cut version(and the Lite version as well) has less enemy fire being shot, so jumping to dodge enemy fire can actually be an intregal part of gameplay.
EDIT- For some reason unbeknownst to me, the Devans appear more often. I'm going to tinker with some values and see if I can slow down their breeding.

Er, n00b, you do know that the red laser beams don't actually hurt Jazz, right?

Ah, okay.

I still get a higher score if I don't try to jump over them.

To register gamemaker and get a bunch of small bonuses, which quite honestly are mostly just used in making games more presentable, costs 20 dollars (it was 10 when I registered, though). To get a registered copy of the games factory costs 30-50 dollars (and I got a trial copy, and quite honestly hated the thing in the first place). A registered copy of multimedia fusion costs 100-200 dollars.
I think there's a reason so many people use gamemaker.

Gah, how did you guys get over 7000? Highest I could get was 6600 D=.

If this was an actual arcade game I would be broke by now.

An older version had more bullets so a score of 4750 could drop down to 3900 right before you died, which I thought was ridiculous, so I lowered the bullets. If you keep shooting, you could get hit by two bullets in a row and not notice that you dropped 100.

EDIT- and in the old version, if the bullets hurt Jazz, no one would make it past 1500.
And my highest score is 6550, gj on nearly getting 8000 LF.

The problem with jumping is that you can rarely dodge the bullet and it makes you unable to hit the enemies for a few seconds. That's usually enough to kill you.

TGF and MMF produce higher-quality games. Coupled with the fact that a lot of people that use TGF and MMF are actually smart, the result is an overall more enjoyable community. I've played more Click games than GM games because Click games are coded better, are more stable, the result is of higher quality, and can do more than make games. I won't even get into Jamagic.

Guys, let's not turn this into another MMF vs GM debate. Fact is that you can do pretty much anything with either, GM is just more code and object based while MMF is more cause/effect and layout based. And the GM community has this odd problem where none of the really good games ever get finished.

So using gamemaker is making me stupid and a jerk? I should shell out the 100 dollars to use multimedia fusion to raise my IQ and better my social connections? And make all sorts of non-game applications that I don't even want to make?

Sure, multimedia fusion might make more better and more professional games, but does that mean that even a person who is good at making games can't make fun games in gamemaker? More bad games might be made in gamemaker then are made in Click products, but that's simply because gamemaker is more available to the causual game producer who doesn't want to spend a hundred or two dollars to fuel a hobby.

EDIT: This is what I get for taking a long time to think out my replies D=

You can still shoot in midair, but Jazz's shots can't hit anything at the peak of his jump. I use jumping until about 3000 points in, at which point I rely on hitting the space bar as rapidly as possible
EDIT- New high score: 7100
EDIT 2- Newer high score: 8250! =D I feel so alive

Theres a game called "Tekken". People win it by rapidly mashing buttons.
Yet it's still called a game.

Tekken has combos in it. Combos include remembering combinations and playing them out right. This makes it a game.

Also button-mashing is deplorable. If the klingons were gamers, they would call the practice dishonorable.

I dunno. Surveys show that in a group of 100 people, 64 are actually Klingons in disguise.
