Fullscreen and Connection Problems
In #jj2 today, SkulLFoR was talking about having connection problems in JJ2, despite having no router and a disabled firewall. He seemed to have made the discovery that the game finally worked if he played in windowed mode, but continued to have the time out problem if he played in full screen mode.
I'm curious if anybody else has noticed this pattern, or if there are people who use full screen mode and experience no problems. My only guess so far as to why this may be would be due to thread priorities, where perhaps full screen mode takes more processing time and doesn't let the networking component do it's thing.

does JJ2 use DirectPlay? If it does he might have an outdated version of DirectX.
Wrong forum, btw.

Does he meet all the system requirements for JJ2?

I usually play fullscreen and nothing happens. Everything works fine... Whats wrong with your JJ2? Did you update JJ2 with the server patch and the 1.23 patch itself? (If you have TSF you have the 1.24 patch) What version of JJ2 do you have? (When you go in the game, skip the intro and all that, look at the menu on look at the bottom left corner) There's nothing wrong with my JJ2

My guess would be a DirectX problem. I noticed that Jazz2 uses NO DirectDraw at all in windowed mode a while back. So it probably doesn't use any of it that way.
At least, that's the only technical difference I know between the two modes. Last edited by Newspaz; Oct 30, 2004 at 01:56 PM. |

I have had this problem and have mentioned it in #jj2 one time, but nobody else had it. A few months back everytime I would put my jazz in fullscreen it would make me timeout after a while, probably 30 seconds. Going back to windowed mode would immediatly fix it again. After a while, in which I installed no new directX software (I have version 9) it stopped doing that. I could play fullscreen fine for about two weeks until jj2 went broke wholly.
I use a router and a firewall.

Conker: JJ2 uses Winsock, not DirectPlay, as far as I know. I know this topic is similar to topic in Technical Help, but I'm not really asking for help here.
nobody: I'm not having the problem (although actually I haven't tested this myself -- I should probably do that sometime), but I'm trying to figure out a problem other people have. I'm assuming either JJ2 version 1.23 or 1.24. I wonder.. has there been more problems with this on 1.23 than 1.24? Newspaz: I'm pretty sure JJ2 uses DirectDraw for both windowed and fullscreen modes. There isn't any other way to draw fast enough. Fquist: So you made NO changes to DirectX (that you were aware of), and it still mysteriously worked for a couple weeks? Was there anything else that you can remember doing or happening at that time?

I actually seem to have the opposite problem, as fullscreen gives me no problems and occasionally windowed will time me out. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it, so I tend to stick to fullscreen.

I don't see this likely to be due to a virus.

I can't think of anything Monolith. I can only think of having recently cleaned up my swap memory drive which was full, causing me to have very little memory.. for the rest, not anything. I installed NVidia's latest drivers after it already started working in fullscreen (and just before the game stopped starting at all)
