Flash actionscript art
Some time ago when the good old DOS games were still popular, I happened to come across a game called "Genewars" from Bullfrog (front cover). It was a cool game where you had to fly from one planet to another with a rocket and research new animals, build bases, extract minerals, plant trees, etc. in the process as well as perform various other tasks on each planet to complete it. However there was one particular thing about the game that I really liked. It was the short intro movie displayed each time the game was run.
I remember that there was a genewars logo displayed in front, but what really fascinated me is how the background was made - which is exactly what I tried to reproduce here in Flash. I really lack the words to describe how it looked like (color gradients in motion from black background to purple color clusters moving almost like a liquid) so see it below. I tried to get it to match the original thing or at least get it close, but on the end it turned out I'm still far off. What do you think? NOTE: Please let me know if the movie doesn't load.

Yes, it is awesome. Something a bit like JJ1 menu background, but way better.

Argh, screw Geocities! Why the hell is it so hard to find a good host...
I'll be using a link from my own server as of now. Movie should load from now on.

Looks like the textured backgrounds from the official JJ2 tilesets/photoshop's render clouds gone crazy. Looks quite neat.

Overlord, you might want to check out the Winamp AVS Presets called "TC Plasma" and "Oldskool Plasma". Perhaps the equations used in there can help you making the flash better. You can find them in the "Whacko III" pack, it's in the plugins section on winamp.com

I made a button with Action Script once D=.
Seriously, though, that's awesome. And all in Flash?

Well it isn't exactly 100% actionscript, I cheated a bit. The effect was made by using a number (100 I tihnk) of "dot" movie clips moving in random directions and adding a Flash 8 blur filter to them. This makes them almost invisible on a black background, but when 2 or more overlap you get a more visible spot. When many overlap, you get this cool looking effect. I've used actionscript to move the objects around the scene. You'll be surprised how easy it is to make something like this once you know the basics.
If anyone wishes to obtain the *.fla source file for this effect please let me know.
