Jazz 2 Will Not Connect

My Jazz 2 refuses to connect to the list server. I have all of the patches (even ones that have nothing to do with this), no firewall, no router, and nothing that would stop Jazz 2 from connecting at all. Direct IP use is also messed up. Sometimes it will connect, sometimes it will not. This is stopping me from playing JJ2 and driving me nuts. I have Windows 98 SE. Any suggestions?

What does it do when you try to connect to list servers?
Do you get the "Error connecting to list servers" error?
Can you get the server list using Xjj2, JazzTool, JazzForce, Telnet or anything similar?

Did the problem just start or has it always been like this?

The best basic test is to use telnet to connect. Run telnet (telnet.exe) and connect to jazz.logicware.com on port 10057. If it connects properly, there is something stopping JJ2 from connecting to the list server. If not, there is something stopping your computer.

You could try editing the jazz2.exe file so that jazz.logicware.com is hardcoded, which not only makes sure that it will always try it first, but improves speed.

It only just started. XJJ2 works...to a limited extent. Whenever I try to connect to a server, it stays on connect forever. I already edited my JAZZ2.EXE long ago for this, and it improved speed, but neither the older JAZZ2.EXE nor the newer works.

Did any modifications happen to your computer which you think might have something to do with this. Or did anything new/unusual happen to your computer a short time before the problem happend?

Did you try telnet? You should always try that.

Also, does the J2O gip.php work? It could just be that there are no servers up.

Try and figure out what the error is. First ping jazz.logicware.com, then traceroute it, and then finally telnet to it. Ping and traceroute will give you good information if it is a problem between you and the server, so if they work but telnet on port 10057 doesn't, it means that you have a problem connecting out on that port.

Did anyone install a firewall without you knowing?

I did try Telnet. It connected without a problem, but when I attempted to connect to any servers it was stuck on the "Connecting..." screen.

Hehe. Yes, there were servers up. I checked several times with GIP, Telnet, the IRC Add-on, etcetera.

Everything works except connecting to the list server in JJ2. But when I attempt to connect to an individual server, it just stays on "Connecting..." forever.

No. I thought that a possibility, but I've checked any vector that the firewall could load through, and there is none.

It seems like something is blocking certain ports. 10052 is used by the list server in addition to individual JJ2 servers, so if you can't connect to JJ2 servers, and JJ2 won't connect to the list server (on port 10052), something is blocking at least port 10052. The other mediums (telnet, XJJ2, etc.) all use port 10057 for their list server stuff, but JJ2 uses 10052.

The problem has apparently fixed itself. Thank you for your help, though.

I hate it when problems fix themselves. Because it leaves you uncertain as to what the cause was or how to go about fixing it. And you never know when it will come back.

For some very odd reason, Telnet doesn't work right when using "Connect > Remote System...".

But when I convert telnet://jazz.logicware.com:10055/ to a URL link and double-click on it, it opens up telnet and connect to jazz.logicware.com sucessfully (on my Win98).

As for Win2K (I run dualboot ), it works easily without problem by typing telnet jazz.logicware.com 10055 in the Command Prompt.

What I always do to fix my list servers is: go into regedit-go to list servers area-delete the "list.jazzjackrabbit.com" string.

In your listservers all you need is jazz.logicware.com
