Thank heavens...

I'm having problems with timing out on JJ2. I just got my new DSL modem in the mail, and Jazz be timin' out.

I don't think the problem is the firewall. I told the firewall to allow all activity, and the problem still remained the same. I opened the right ports in the firewall, and, of course, if turning off the firewall didn't help, opening the ports in the firewall isn't the solution.

I use an external modem connected to my computer by a ethernet cable. There is no LAN of computers, except for my iPAQ pocket PC, which is networked with my desktop somehow (the software set up the connection) through a USB cable. I do not understand configuring networks, and it all kind of gives me a headache.

Could the way I am connected to my modem be the problem? I don't know where to start, or what area of the manual to look under... I don't even know what manual I need to look at. I can't ask anyone for help because I'm the computer tech of the house... but I haven't learned networks yet.

If you need more info I can give it. I know a lot about computers, so I believe I can pick this stuff up pretty well. But as I said, I don't know excrement about networks.

I do have the option of connecting the modem to the computer through a USB cable, if this will bypass the whole network problem, it could be a good thing... however I do want to network in the future. I have plans for installing windows on an X-Box in the living room, then networking it to my desktop in my bedroom, which is networked to my Pocket PC.

My version of Windows is Windows XP. I'm using MacAfee Firewall. The modem is MSN NetDSL 800 by Arescom. My social security number is blankety blank blank

...I just checked the Network Connections folder of my Control Pannel... I can check up on ... stuff.. and settings for the ethernet port my modem is using to communicate... But I don't know what to do with it.

Well there are three possibilities with this configuration:

1. That you still have some kind of firewall running. Ensure that the built-in windows firewall is disabled, as well as any other software firewalls.

2. That the software to network your iPAQ somehow filters the internet connection. This is very highly unlikely, but you may want to uninstall the iPAQ syncing\networking software on the PC just to make sure.

3. That your ISP or modem itself filters connections. For this you will need to contact your ISP and ask them. If there is any sort of ISDN connection, you may be out of luck, as several other people here have not been able to get ports forwarding correctly with ISDN.

(Could a moderator please split this and the above post into a new topic? Thanks)

Hi! I'm browsing this page with my iPAQ! I found out how.

Logging onto servers takes a long time with Half-Life, and they don't let you see the desktop while loading. I'm having trouble connecting on that game too.

I'm going to try connecting the modem through the USB cable tomorrow, then if that doesn't work, i'm going to call the company to see if the modem has some sort of filter.
