You can't put the spring back because it was broken off.

You examine the machine. Pipes, springs, pulleys, gears, pumps, and dials cover the contraption. It doesn't appear to have a purpouse, however.

Look at the control panel.

There is none.

Turn the leftmost, topmost knob 180 degrees.

It's glued in place.
