I'd try getting down the figure's anatomy perfectly without perspective first, then try some complex positions without perspective before trying anything like that. Skipping steps is never a good thing.

As for the overall proportions, it's all a little bit off. It's good to have a unit to base the length of the figure off of, many people like to use the head. Just take a look at this picture I scanned off of a worksheet I got in my art class at school...
